Patch 3.1 lesser-known changes

April 19th, 2009

Sure, you know about dual spec, the Argent Tournament, and Ulduar. But patch 3.1 was a patch of many changes, and some of them seem to have flown under most people’s radar. Here are a few changes that have been surprising some people recently, judging by the tips we’ve been getting.

Siphon Life is no longer a separate spell. The talent now adds a self-healing effect to your Corruption, as well as boosting the damage on Corruption, Seed of Corruption, and Unstable Affliction.
Emblems are now automatically distributed to everyone upon the first person looting them, similar to gold. This means no more forgotten emblems, and no more rush to the corpse as everyone goes to get theirs. It will also make loot chests much less unpleasant.
Many spells with ground effects, such as Rain of Fire, Blizzard, and Death and Decay, are not showing the same as they used to. This is because there is a new video effects option, “Show Projected Textures,” which controls whether things like the rune circles from RoF/Blizz/DnD are rendered on your client. It also appears to control my framerate in 25-man raids.
The 10% experience bonus from heirloom shoulders now applies to quest experience as well as experience gained from killing mobs.

Ensidia downs Yogg-Saron

April 17th, 2009

It was inevitable that someone would down Yogg-Saron pretty quickly, and less than twenty four hours after the patch went live European guild Ensidia have claimed World First on the Death God. Given the non-linear progression into Ulduar, a lot of other guilds were able to pull off world firsts on other bosses. It also seems that Ensidia was focusing on clearing Ulduar in normal mode, as none of their kills were done on hard mode. This means we’re unlikely to see Algalon downed this week (not by Ensidia, anyway).

While it came as no surprise that someone killed him, what surprised me was that it was Ensidia. I was betting on Vodka (can I get a ‘for the Alliance!’ from anyone?) and that they managed to do it while many of the EU realms were having stability issues. Of course, it should be noted that Ensidia was the same guild that cleared all Wrath content three days after its release (they hadn’t decided on a name yet).

Boubouille over at MMO Champion has a full raid list and info on some of the loot that dropped, including a rather nice cloak and a piece of that legendary healer mace.

Maintenance continues to be extended, no time frame given

April 14th, 2009

Today’s epic maintenance to apply patch 3.1, which has stretched from 1 AM for some realms and 3 AM for others, has been additionally extended. Originally, the realms were supposed to go live at 11 AM PDT; that time has come and gone, and been pushed back a few times.

The latest update, posted to the Breaking News box a few minutes ago, is that they do not currently have an ETA on when the realms will be up, and they’ll give us some more information at about 2 PM PDT, which is in 45 minutes or so.

Update 5:15 p.m. EDT: The realms continue to be down, with the in-game message now telling us that there will be an announcement at 6:00 p.m. EDT letting us all know more information.

Update 6:15 p.m. EDT: Maintenance is continuing on all realms. There is no time frame given as to when the realms will be back up, however there will be an additional announcement at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Stay tuned to WoW Insider for more information. Additionally, the official forums and account management appear to be intermittently down now as well.

Wowhead unveils new talent calculator

April 14th, 2009

The talent calculator was Wowhead’s original feature, and it’s been a good friend through WoW’s development. So it is with a heavy heart that I announce that Wowhead is shutting down the talent calculator.

Nah, just kidding: they released an awesome new version today. The new version of the Wowhead talent calculator, in addition to looking even spiffier than usual, has a few added features:

Glyphs, like the MMO-Champion calculator has had for a while (but prettier, of course)
Auto-updating URL – no more need for a “link to this” button
“Restore” button will reset a calculator if you got there from a link and then altered it
All talents are now updated for patch 3.1, as well. The pet talent calculator has gotten the same treatment as the main talent calculator, with auto-updating URLs and a Restore button.

The only thing I don’t like about the new talent calculators is the way you select your class/pet family; it used to be a text list, and now it’s an icon grid, which I find harder to use quickly, especially in the case of the pet calculator. But it’s a small complaint.

EU forums get separate Horde and Alliance guild recruitment areas

April 12th, 2009

Now while the US forums have had this feature for a while, EU Blue Wryxian has posted that the EU forums have a little more order this afternoon. Rather than clumping the Horde and Alliance guild recruitment threads together, they now have separate areas to, as he puts it, ‘increase the usefulness and accessibility of the Guild Recruitment forums’.

Despite his entreaties to the contrary, we’re sure it’s more to do with furthering the mutual dislike between factions. However that said, it will certainly save a lot of time and hassle.

Steelseries looking for Facebook fans, offering epic loot

April 12th, 2009

Steelseries, who you may remember from such releases as the Zboard and the official World of Warcraft mouse, has teamed up with Upper Deck, Bradygames and J!NX to give away four Ultimate World of Warcraft Prize Packs during April, that’s one each week. The best part is it’s really simple to enter: all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to add them as a fan on Facebook.

The list of loot is actually quite impressive and includes:

World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse
SteelSeries Zboard Limited Edition Wrath of the Lich King Keyset
Zboard Gaming Keyboard
SteelSeries 5C Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring everyone’s favourite Frost Wyrm Sindragosa)
SteelSeries Qck Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring the Lich King)
Wrath of the Lich King Strategy Guide
World of Warcraft Atlas Set
$100 World of Warcraft Apparel Gift Certificate
World of Warcraft Trading Card Game – Drums of War 2 Player Starter Set
World of Warcraft Miniatures Core Set Booster
One again, it’s open to everyone, and all you have to do is click here and add them as a fan.

As contests go, it’s an easy one to enter and you stand the chance to win a lot of cool swag. I particularly like the rather old school atlases (which have recently been updated) and are perfect for RPers who would rather consult an oversized tome of knowledge while the Drums of War starter deck holds the somewhat small chance of winning precious in-game loot.

But before you rush off, starry eyed at the prospect of some loot, don’t forget we’re also running a Fan Art competition with Steelseries! Don’t forget to enter as the closing date of April 20th is creeping ever closer.

Blizzard S.A.S. (France) to publish WoW in the EU

April 12th, 2009

Over the past couple of weeks, European players have been receiving plain text emails (like the one above) from Blizzard. I know what you’re thinking … scam alert but for once you’d be wrong. It might not be full of the usual sparkly Blizzard graphics but it’s no less legit – and a quick call to Blizzard Europe confirmed it.

From April 14th (that’s this Tuesday), Blizzard Entertainment Inc. (USA) will no longer publishing the game in Europe. Pause for dramatic effect. Rather that will be done by a new European arm of the company, Blizzard S.A.S. (France). The email itself is basically a courtesy — after all, you wouldn’t actually cancel your account just for an admin change, would you?

Personally I think this a great move, it means that we, the European players of World of Warcraft, are finally being recognised as the legion we are. We’re a separate territory (as should be obvious from Blizzard’s European job site) and proud of it, it’s just nice for it all to be official.

The 21st Spell – The New Version of DOFUS Released

April 10th, 2009

Version 1.27 of the online game DOFUS, developed by ANKAMA, touched down on 7 April. This update features new special class spells, new alignment quests, new challenges and several other modifications to make the game more accessible and fun!

Not only is the ANKAMA team working on the DOFUS 2.0 graphic update, but they also keep on improving the game’s gameplay. This new version of DOFUS includes:

The integration of special class spells

Each class (Cra, Feca, etc.) will have its own special spell. This 21st spell can be obtained with a Doploon token. Players can get that token by defeating a Dopple in their class temple. A Dopple is a powerful creature with the spells of one of the playable character classes at their disposal. Doploons can be exchanged for experience and items, and that’s why they’re so sought-after by players.

What we know and don’t know about the dungeon after Ulduar

April 9th, 2009

One of the most often asked and debated questions on WoW Insider lately has been:”What is after Ulduar and patch 3.1?” While no one can know for sure, we do have some evidence out there that can help us at least look smart about it.

Back in October 2008, Kaplan said in an interview with Curse that Patch 3.2 will contain a new raid instance that hasn’t been announced yet. There’s some question as to what exactly he was talking about. We also know from the article that Patch 3.3 will contain the Icecrown Citadel, so we know the 3.2 dungeon won’t be that.

There is also the possibility that Kaplan didn’t mean a new raid instance in Patch 3.2, but a new battleground. Many people think this is the case. Zarhym confirmed that there will indeed be a new battleground sometime in the future, and signs point this happening in patch 3.2.

However…

Last night Crygil, a Blizzard blue poster, said that the next dungeon after Ulduar is still a secret. This makes me scratch my head and wonder if indeed there will now be a new 10/25-man raid in 3.2 or a new 5-man dungeon (or both).

As I said about we know that 3.3 will contain Icecrown Citadel, so no secret there. We know that there will be a new battleground, and that’s no secret anymore. But a battleground isn’t a new dungeon. So is this confirmation of a new dungeon/raid in patch 3.2?

I gather this just opens up more questions, but it’s still interesting to pay attention to this now and reflect on it more when patch 3.2 actually does come around.

EU Arena Tournament standings posted in anticipation of phase 4

April 9th, 2009

Vaneras has posted the latest EU Arena tournament rankings over on the forums (after the latest phase ended), and it looks like PMR has found their way back on top across the pond: Priest/Mage/Rogue teams have taken over the top three spots. The Death Knight/Paladin/DPS teams, formerly dominating, have fallen down to just two spots out of ten, and two Shamans have made an appearance, one partnered with a Druid and a Mage, and the other with a Lock and Hunter. Very interesting.

We should see the US standings posted soon. You can see the rest of the EU teams in the big listing over on the Armory if you want. Phase 4 of the tournament, Vaneras says, will be an invitational, and will start next week on April 14th. Congrats to all of the winners so far, and good luck in the rest of the tourney!

Arena Tournament Phase 3 ends tonight

April 7th, 2009

We hope you got those 200 games, because the Arena Tournament is ending this phase of the tournament by 9pm PDT tonight. This means that only the Top 1,000 teams will qualify for the next round, and the rest of the entrants can take the season off. The Top 1,000 teams will move on to Phase 4, or the invitational ladder, for a shot at winning up to $75,000 in a prize pool worth over $200,000. In order to qualify, players must have played a minimum of 200 games with the same character on the same team.

Players on the Top 1,000 teams will receive the title of “Vanquisher” for all their characters Level 71 or higher. As an awesome consolation prize, any player who managed to get 200 games regardless of how well (or how badly) they performed will receive Murkimus the Gladiator on one of their characters. When Phase 3 ends tonight, the Tournament Realms will be shut down for one week, after which Phase 4 will begin anew on April 14. Good luck! We know it might be a little late for that, so… uh, congrats?

Dofus Guild FAQs

April 7th, 2009

Guide to Creating/Managing Guilds, by mariemonster
Hello! This is more of a essay with tips rather than instructions; however, I will go over the basic functions of creating a guild also.
Where do I create a guild?
First, you will need to think about the point of your guild. What kind of members are you looking for? Alignments–Bonta/Brak mix, or one alignment only? PvP guild, crafters, or something else entirely?

Next, you need a guildogem. This is a global drop, and is fairly cheap to buy nowadays (last I checked, it went for 250kk). Take the gem and go to (1, -9). There, you will create a guild name and choose your shield’s design and color. Be careful! Once the name and design are set, you can’t change them. (TIP: Before creating a guild, get nine other people to join you at the temple. Recruiting right off the bat with no one in mind to become a member is hard.)
What now?
Congrats, you’re a leader of a guild! But why isn’t your symbol and guild name showing up above your head? That’s because, in order to attain guild status, you must have ten people in your guild. If you haven’t taken the advice from the above paragraph, it’s time to go to a public zaap (or start pm’ing and begging) to recruit members.
A word about yourself, the leader.
You are the reason people join. Let me say this again–YOU are the reason people join. You are the core, the center. You’re the keystone. You are confident, smart, patient, gentle in giving directions, yet firm enough to enforce the rules. You are the unbiased ear in hearing out problems, and can make fair decisions others can depend on. You are optimistic–especially about the guild’s status and future–up until the very end.

Are we being teased about the next expansion?

April 6th, 2009

So there’s been a feeling in the air lately that some of the blues have been in a bit of a teasing mood. Sure, that’s not neccessarily new, but what is interesting is what exactly they may be teasing us about. For example, here’s a recent post in which one Sulmus of Aerie Peak asks for the Greymane Wall to be opened. Zarhym soon jumps in to say that they would be “out of their mind” to open the wall… then follows up with random ellipses. To top it all off, Bornakk and Crygil jump in with silly punctuation of their own.

Now when Alex and I were discussing this the other day, Alex insisted that they were basically admitting that the Greymane wall would be opened, likely in conjunction with the next expansion. He says it’s already in the planning stages, and the blues are just waving the knowledge tantalizingly out of sight because they’re not allowed to officially announce it yet. Now, at first I wasn’t really on board with it, but then I noticed another post Zarhym commented in.

Imani of Aerie Peak posted a thread with the aim of advocating for more Old World content along the style of the Un’goro detour or Stormwind Harbor in Wrath. With the Maelstrom, she said, Blizzard should focus on fleshing out different areas of the old world, such as Gilneas, Azshara, and Grim Batol, weaving them in with new expansion content to give a sense of continuity. It’s certainly a good idea to begin with, but what caught my eye is that Zarhym himself commented that it was a good post, thus surreptitiously tagging the thread with the air of officiality via blue text and providing a tacit endorsement of the idea.

Now of course, Zarhym’s not a member of the dev team proper, and he could just simply be saying he thinks it’s a cool idea (because it is), but considering his other post, I can’t help but wonder if Alex had a point. Maybe these are ways to say, “Yeah, we’re headed to the Maelstrom and filling out Azeroth for the next expansion, but we can’t tell you that officially, so here, have some oblique references and teasing!”

It could all be wishful thinking, sure. Maybe the blues are just having some fun and commenting on some cool ideas, but still, I’m thinking I’d put good odds on a Maelstrom-related announcement at the next BlizzCon. Time will tell, but I’m starting to feel sort of optimistic.
