Massively proclaims victory and rage over all citizens of Norrath!

January 27th, 2010

See, this is what happens when we let Seccia write titles for us. Ughs… sorry about that readers. We don’t proclaim any victory, nor do we have any rage towards the citizens of Norrath or EverQuest II. We are, as always, unbiased in our viewpoints… unlike some new Dark Elven interns.

However, Seccia has noted that we’ve received a package today from a member of her elven bretheren, a certain community management elf by the name of Kiara. Enclosed were two pieces of a shattered tablet, one named “Victory” while the other was entitled “Rage.” We’re not sure what this whole thing will form once it’s put together, but we do know that other fansites have more pieces of the tablet. (Oh, Dark Elves and their puzzles.)

We’ve put the pictures of victory and rage after the break, so good luck with assembling the tablet and we can’t wait to see what it reveals!

Mass Testing in EVE, Wednesday, to determine source of lag in fleet battles

January 27th, 2010

EVE Online’s latest expansion, Dominion, brought sweeping changes to how alliances claim and hold space, and more recently revamped capital ship warfare. However, there has been a downside of late in terms of server stability and lag. Twitter is pretty much aflame with players lamenting the server issues, not to mention the forums, and it’s something CCP Games needs to address right away.

To that end, CCP is looking to the playerbase for help with “Mass Testing” on Wednesday, to determine the source of lag in large fleet battles. The devs will be looking into the problems widely reported with medium and large scale fleet combat and will need at least 50 pilots, though if 200 or more showed up this would be even better, says CCP Tanis. Players interested in helping out should hop on the Singularity test server on Wednesday, January 27, at 17:00 UTC. Mass Testing participants should join the “MassTesting” channel in-game on the test server as well. All EVE pilots who want to get involved should see CCP Navigator’s announcement for more info about tomorrow’s fleet combat tests and the discussion in a related forum thread.

Acclaim CEO says Spellborn version 2.0 is on the way

January 27th, 2010

If you’re a fan of The Chronicles of Spellborn, Beau Turkey at Spouse Aggro found something today that will make you very happy. There have been rumors floating around lately about a restructuring of the game, and those rumors were recently confirmed on the official forums by Howard Marks, the CEO of Acclaim Games: “The rumors are true! Spellborn Version Two is on the way.”

Marks went on to explain that the new version has already been released in Japan to great success. They’ve been fine tuning it, and plans for the English version are underway. If you are a current player of The Chronicles of Spellborn, be sure you have a valid email address on file with Acclaim, because everyone playing the current version will be invited to beta test the new version via email.

While details are minimal at this point, it’s great news for players to know that more is on the way. You can take a look at the forum announcement here, and Beau’s take from a fan point of view here.

Earthrise interview focuses on game’s progress

January 27th, 2010

We’re always on the lookout for more info about Earthrise, an upcoming sandbox MMO with a far future, post-apocalyptic setting. The latest interview updating on the game’s status is a Ten Ton Hammer Q&A with Masthead Studios CEO Atanas Atanasov. The studio head explains a bit about the combat system revamp, aimed at keeping Earthrise’s combat dynamic and fast-paced, with a more intuitive interface as well.

The interview also hits upon how they’re fine tuning the game’s economic systems as well as balancing rewards as players progress, plus Atanasov talks a bit about Earthrise’s “exploration mode” (which imparts faster movement but greater vulnerability to damage) and specialized crafting. Check out Ten Ton Hammer’s Q&A with Atanas Atanasov for an update on the state of Earthrise.

Ashen Verdict strength-based melee DPS rings stats

January 27th, 2010

Patch 3.3.2, the next minor content patch, will include the much requested strength-based rings for melee DPS from the Ashen Verdict reputation. This should make warriors, paladins, and death knights quite happy. This afternoon Zarhym has released the stats for the different reputation levels (friendly, exalted, etc…), which we have for you after the break.

The minor content patch will also bring with it an influx of other small changes, as well as arena season 8. You can check out all the changes in the translated version of the patch notes that were discovered last night.

The rings after the break.

Shifting Perspectives: Restoration 101

January 27th, 2010

Every week, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting druids and those who group with them. This week, a quick and dirty guide to raising one’s tree from a young sapling to a mighty oak, or other suitably impressive arboreal species.

Whenever other columnists here write really good columns, I sit at my computer and swear a blue streak, for I am a jealous god. Sacco, damn him, turned out a great article on the basics of elemental shamans, and for a while I’ve been kicking around bits and pieces of 101-esque columns for all four druid specs. This was the last shove I needed to get that done. While I expect our new balance blogger (a.k.a. Murmurs, the person I will be forcing to do all my number-crunching in the future with bribes or, when necessary, threats) will address moonkin, I’ll cover bears, cats, and today, trees.

Bornakk on Arena Season 8 delay

January 27th, 2010

If you PvP you may have noticed Arena Season 8 has not arrived today as expected. The forums certainly have, and Bornakk made sure to explain the reason. Apparently in order to start the arena season, the minor content patch 3.3.2 is necessary and since it isn’t ready yet neither is Season 8. A brief side question about how people are finding the new resilience changes devolves but should’t distract us from the main message here. Arena Season 8 has been delayed because patch 3.3.2 is not out yet. That’s the sum total of what we know at this time. Please, do not panic, as soon as we know more about when the season will start or patch 3.3.2 will drop, we’ll share that information with you.

World of WarCrafts: Sculpting an interest in art

January 26th, 2010

If you like tanking (sure, we all do) you may be interest in this update to yesterday’s post about tier 10 tanking gear: the dodge on gloves and defense on chests is being removed and the armor is being increased to bring them in line with the off-set tanking pieces due to the popularity of higher armor in Icecrown Citadel, and we now finally have hard numbers. So far, it looks as if the armor increases are pretty significant (882 armor on iLevel 251 gloves, 1064 armor on iLevel 251 set chestplates) and should make up for the dodge or defense lost, especially as armor has increased in popularity due to the Chill of the Throne debuff in ICC. We’re told that the armor increase scales with iLevel so the iLevel 264 and 277 versions will also have proportionate armor increases. This is a patch 3.3.2 change so don’t panic if your gear doesn’t have the armor yet.

This makes me even more happy that I chose to focus on my tier set over offset pieces to get the four piece bonus as soon as possible. It makes these pieces far more attractive when compared to the high armor offset Cataclysm Chestguard and Gauntlers of the Kraken. (the Sanctified 264 versions should have exactly the same armor). I’d like to have seen a little more armor on the pieces, myself, but it’s still pretty solid.

Around Azeroth: Ugly to the bone

January 26th, 2010

Well, I think we’ve found the winner of this month’s Most Hideous Gear award. This bank alt of Azmodan on Aerie Peak-EU is truly a symphony in blue, yellow and red. Wait, a symphony? Scratch that. Replace it with “a terrifying conglomeration of a paladin, a mutant ant, and an Insane Clown Posse fan club.” Remember, just because the outfit technically matches doesn’t mean that you should wear it.

Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Breakfast Topic: What really happens during maintenance?

January 26th, 2010

Last week, there was a thread on the European forums about what really happened during the weekly downtime. Sure, some people said the boring answers of various things having to do with software and hardware. Others were more of the fanciful variety involving the hamsters that run the servers being fed. However, I like the more RP approach to the situation.

Goblins and gnomes are using refitted shredders to sweep the streets and repaint the buildings. Mankrik’s wife has stopped playing dead for a little while and is grabbing a bite to eat with her husband. The stormforged dwarves are hard at work forging more drops for the raids that have reset. The streets of Orgrimmar are empty with tumbleweeds blowing down the streets and an old orc in a rocking chair is playing the theme to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on an old harmonica (the music was in the tumbleweed’s contract).

What do you think the World of Warcraft does while we’re temporarily forced offline?
