Midsummer Fire Festival: Need help juggling?

June 30th, 2010

The Midsummer Fire Festival is pretty decent for a WoW holiday — good experience and gold from extinguishing and honoring fires, fun cosmetic rewards and occasionally mind-numbing achievements. Wait, what was that last one?

Torch Juggler has become notorious this year, as the achievement is not only difficult for people who are unable to click their mouses and buttons fast enough, but it is also part of the meta-achievement for completing the Midsummer Fire Festival and gaining the title “Flame Keeper.” So, here’s how to get Torch Juggler in three easy steps.

New selection of Final Fantasy XIV wildlife

June 25th, 2010

We learned quite a bit about the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV during E3, but there’s still quite a bit left still to learn before its release later this year. One of the more obvious questions is what, exactly, players will be squaring off against on the field of battle; in a series partly defined by its memorable recurring adversaries, it’s reasonable to wonder what will return and what won’t.

Most of the newly revealed monsters have a storied history in the series as a whole, and several are direct exports from Final Fantasy XI, including the deceptively fearsome Goobbue making a triumphant return. Funguar also return, although looking very different from Vana’diel’s odd mushroom-frog hybrids. Each of the monsters has a brief write-up describing its size, behavior, and habitat, so Final Fantasy XIV fans would be well served by taking a look at what they’re going to have to deal with during their journeys.

EVE Online server move delayed by database issues

June 25th, 2010

Last week, CCP Games announced that the EVE Online server was heading for a move and a bit of an upgrade. Hidden within a few cabinets in a single datacenter is everything that makes up the EVE universe, from characters and ships to planets and the market. The cluster of hardware has been expanded over the years and now exceeds the limitations of the hardware cabinets it occupies. Moving the cluster to a new location within the datacenter should help support future upgrades to keep up with the game’s growing subscriber-base.

The shuffle began early yesterday morning at 09:00 UTC and was planned to be completed by 15:00 UTC the same day. Unfortunately, the transition to a new locale has had some unforeseen side-effects for Tranquility. After a long day of server work, final testing of the cluster revealed database issues that must be corrected before the game can go live. At 03:00 UTC this morning, the estimate for restoring Tranquility and the EVE website was mid-day today. With that time having now passed, CCP has released a new estimate of 16:00 UTC. If necessary, further delays will be announced on the official EVE Facebook page, the CCP Games Twitter page and the game’s main website.

Server merge hints are confirmed for Aion

June 25th, 2010

“SGDCZ DUZGZ RKZMC DCVHS GRDQU DQLDQ FDZMC BGZQZ BSDQS QZMRE DQCDS ZHKR” was the mysterious message posted by Aion’s Andrew “Tamat” Beegle yesterday. The jumble of letters on Twitter and the Aion notice page was decoded pretty quickly by players: “THE DAEVA HAS LANDED WITH SERVER MERGE AND CHARACTER TRANSFER DETAILS.”

Aion confirmed the server merge and character transfers today with more details as well as a comprehensive FAQ covering all the details. The merge will happen on July 7th, and character transfers will begin on the 8th. Players can take advantage of free unlimited character transfers until August 18th, and then they will continue to be available for a fee. Once the server merge happens and transfers begin, there will be a number of contests and events coming both in and out of game.

Check out all the details on the Aion site.

June version update goes live for Final Fantasy XI

June 25th, 2010

It’s a big day for Final Fantasy XI players the world over, as the much-discussed June version update has finally gone live. And with that comes a heretofore unprecedented change, as the level cap jumps once again for the first time in years past the old limit of 75. Unfortunately for those who had been hoping to avoid the process of the Limit Break quests, the patch notes confirm that players will have to undertake a new quest to reach the new cap of 80. Of course, there needs to be something to slow down the rush to all the new content, right?

And there’s quite a bit of that going around with this update — even neglecting the raise in level cap, there are new Wings of the Goddess quests, the Walk of Echoes, newly uncapped zones, and new options in Moblin Maze Mongers. Not to mention that Visions of Abyssea goes live with the update, complete with a small update on the official site about the Empyrean Weapons. So if you haven’t started patching your copy of Final Fantasy XI, now would be the ideal time — the patch is large, and there’s a lot to be done.

Wings Over Atreia: Conquering the level grind

June 25th, 2010

So what’s a girl like you doing in a grind like this?

I can’t tell you how many times a variation of this line has been lobbed my way regarding Aion. Hi everyone! I’m MJ and I have taken the Aion torch from Jef as he has moved over to cover EQII. I am looking forward to soaring through the Aionosphere with you.

If you haven’t heard about the loudest gripe ringing out over Atreia, please let me know what rock you’ve been hiding under lately so I can join you; even people who can’t distinguish Aion from linguine seem to have this answer down pat! OK, all together now — THE GRIND. We all know it, we all live it, and some have lost their remaining scraps of sanity due to it. Those who made it to level 35 still have the brick prints on their foreheads from slamming into that wall. Those who braved to 40+? Well, their foreheads are a bit squishy from repeated slamming.

Patch 3.3.5′s Out of Storage error

June 25th, 2010

While some players are happily playing with the new features included in Patch 3.3.5, many others are unable to do so due to problems that cause the game to crash. Blizzard has noted this situation and is working diligently on a fix to this problem. In the meantime, a thread on the Technical Support forums addresses this issue and what players can do to make the game playable again. The issue appears to pop up as an Out of Storage error for players running World of Warcraft on a 64-bit OS. What can you do while waiting for a fix? Simple — turn down your graphics settings. Blue poster Datth had the following suggestions to make:

Healing the Lich King

June 25th, 2010

It is possible to heal through Arthas with a less than ideal composition — my first kill with 25 players was done without the presence of any holy paladins. If your guild is still struggling with it and the issue might be from the healing side of things, maybe I can help you out here with some additional pointers. If you’re not quite sure about the overall mechanics of the encounter, refer to Kinasthesia’s awesome tutorial videos: Part 1 and Part 2.

I hope you’re familiar with the general encounter mechanics and the strategy as outlined. I’m just going to stick to addressing any aspects that will affect you directly as the healer.

Scattered Shots: Hunter loot in Ruby Sanctum

June 25th, 2010

Patch 3.3.5 is live, and it won’t be long now before the Ruby Sanctum opens, giving us yet another dragon to kill and another chest overflowing with nothing but hunter loot. Like a good hunter, I’ve been poking through the Ruby Sanctum loot lists and doing some paper napkin math to decide exactly what drops I’m going to want to keep safely out of the hands of dirty rogues.

Now, the loot lists we have access to may not be complete. I want to stress this. I really, really hope they’re not, because, all joking aside, the hunter loot selection is grim as all heck. I’m seeing three hunter drops from 25-man, which is fine. But in 10-man I’m only seeing one hunter drop, and it’s probably not going to be used by any hunter — basically no hunter loot in the 10-man version. On the bright side, awesome new trinket!

The 25 most entertaining achievements, part 1

June 25th, 2010

Back in May, we kicked around the idea of reversing gears after our series on “The 25 most evil achievements,” and today I’d like to start the first in our series on … well, I had trouble naming it. “Most fun achievements” is a bit awkward. “Best achievements?” Probably too vague, especially because we could all spend hours arguing over what constitutes a truly good achievement. “Least evil?” That doesn’t do much to inspire readers. Finally I settled on “most entertaining achievements,” and I hope that’s a decent gloss on the series that will follow.

Today we’ll examine the first five, with more to follow next week. In a nutshell, I think these are the achievements that every WoW players should do, if only because they showcase some of Blizzard’s best, most engaging or funniest work.

Spiritual Guidance: A shadowy work in progress

June 25th, 2010

The Spiritual Guidance duo, Fox Van Allen and Dawn Moore, haven’t always gotten along so well. While some attribute that to the natural way that the shadow abhors the light, the real reason is the time they were on The Price is Right together in 2003. I mean, two hundred dollars for a grandfather clock, Dawn? What were you thinking?

Some days, I wish Spiritual Guidance was a TV show. Not only would the world be better able to appreciate my own physical beauty, but I’d be able to do one of those “Last time, on Spiritual Guidance” opening montages, filled with dramatic clips that tell you exactly what happened last week.
