What we learned from death knights

June 25th, 2010

With the final content patch of this expansion on our doorstep and Cataclysm following close behind, we’ll be taking the next several weeks to look back on Wrath of the Lich King and everything that made it what it is, for better or for worse, in Wrath Retrospective.

Wrath of the Lich King is coming to an end, and with it one of the largest experiments that Blizzard has ever done in the history of WoW. At the onset of this expansion, we were all introduced to a new class; the death knight. The addition of a new class has major complications on the game as a whole: how they fit into PvE, how they work in PvP, what buffs and debuffs they bring, what roles they fill, what unique utility that they provide. All of these things have changed the face of the game as we know it. though fairly new arrivals, death knights have been integrated into the game almost seamlessly; the craters that they made when they first arrived, however, are still highly visible to those that know where to look.

Advice on Army of the Dead

June 24th, 2010

In addition to Death Grip, which we discussed last week, there’s another major death knight signature skill that requires a bit of a subtle hand to use correctly, and that has cause much angst and hatred on the part of non-death knights over improper or misunderstood usage. This spell is, of course, Army of the Dead. Army of the Dead is another one of those spells that is unique enough that it really doesn’t have much of a place in a common rotation, but is powerful enough that it’s worth learning to use well. This week, we’ll take a look at the mechanics and proper usage of Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead 101
The basics of Army of the Dead are as follows: You will spend a few seconds summoning a bunch of ghouls. While channeling, you will have damage absorption equal to your dodge and parry chances. Once summoned, the ghouls will be around for approximately 40 seconds or until they get killed, whichever is first. They will attack or taunt the nearest engaged enemies until that time. It’s a pretty straightforward skill in theory, but in practice, using it at the wrong time can wipe you.

Patch 3.3.5: Servers coming online

June 24th, 2010

It looks like the long wait may be over, as US servers appear to be slowly coming back online from a lengthy extended maintenance. For now the list of servers up is small, and there’s been no official confirmation from Blizzard as to whether or not the downtime is over — however most servers that are up and live are experiencing queues in the thousands and are locked from further character creation at this time. We’ll update this post when the servers are officially back up and running — until then, why not check out the Tuesday Morning Post for reading material you may have missed?

Patch 3.3.5 known issues

June 24th, 2010

Just released is the initial official list of patch 3.3.5 known issues… and it’s a big one. Some of the major highlights:

Performing the /eat emote while dancing as a male Blood elf can cause some very unnatural character movement.
Pit of Saron – Scourgelord Tyrannus can remount Rimefang during the encounter.
The last remaining player in a random instance group can miss out on Random Dungeon loot.
Players from different servers can’t trade dungeon items necessary to progress through the dungeon.
The Twilight Orbs periodically disappear during Phase 2 of the Halion encounter.
It is possible for a level 70 to receive the Wrathful Gladiator’s Tabard.
You cannot get the “Call To Arms” Achievement through the Looking for Battleground feature.
Mage Summon Water Elemental does not fully function as a permanent pet when glyphed with Glyph of Eternal Water.
It appears that this includes some unfixed bugs that were present in previous patches, such as Tyrannus remounting Rimefang. There is no indication as to when these bugs will get fixed.

Blizzard releases Patch 3.3.5 Ruby Sanctum storyline

June 24th, 2010

While you’re waiting for Patch 3.3.5 to hit the live servers, you can check out Blizzard’s latest preview of the final raid instance in Wrath of the Lich King — the Ruby Sanctum. European Community Manager Wryxian just dropped by the forums to link the Under Development page for Ruby Sanctum, which contains some new images and (perhaps most importantly, for some) the storyline behind the instance.

In defense of guild talents

June 24th, 2010

About a week ago, Blizzard revealed all the latest updates concerning their gameplan for Cataclysm. Among them were a host of changes to the new guild systems and UI overhaul that were originally announced at BlizzCon 2009. Today I’d like to focus on the removal of guild talents. In future columns, I’ll address other changes.

Scorchling not available in this year’s Midsummer Fire Festival

June 23rd, 2010

Looks like mini-pet collectors are going to be unable to get the Scorchling this year. Aredek posted in the official forums that the Scorched Stone is no longer on the Ice Chest’s drop table from Ahune.

AredekI’m afraid that the Scorchling does not appear to be available this year, folks. I cannot say for certain whether or not it will be made available in the future; however, we encourage you to share your thoughts on the Suggestions forum if you would like to see the Scorched Stone be obtainable in some other way.

Ghostcrawler on guild organization in Cataclysm

June 18th, 2010

In response to players’ concern over guild organization and management in Cataclysm, Ghostcrawler’s been frequenting a thread answering questions about their design goals for guild leveling and why developers decided to axe guild talent trees.

While you should definitely read all of his responses, there are a few points concerning the new system that really jump out:
They didn’t want to encourage guild-hopping, and forcing a guild to pick and choose among talents would have wound up suiting some players and not others (e.g. a guild leader picking PvE-oriented guild talents and alienating the more PvP-focused players in the guild). Hence the leveling system rather than the almost-inevitable squabble over which talents to get.

The evolution of raid design in Cataclysm

June 18th, 2010

There is a plethora (and yes, I look for places to use plethora) of interesting information about how raids and raid lockouts will be designed in Cataclysm and how they’ve learned from what worked and didn’t work in Wrath in this forum thread. Ghostcrawler exposits:

The developers believe that current raid design (separate 10/25 man lockouts) effectively asks raiders to raid twice as much if they want to maximize their emblem gain, which helps cause player burnout and boredom.
The ability to kill a boss in separate 10/25 man lockouts is ‘nothing sacred’ in terms of changing the design, since before Wrath it wasn’t even possible.

Midsummer Fire Festival loot updated

June 18th, 2010

It seems pretty likely that fairly soon we’ll be looking at a updated Midsummer Fire Festival. Why am I so sure, you ask? Well, as many tipsters have stopped to inform us, there’s a plethora of new gear in the armory that looks likely to be iLevel 232 updates of Lord Ahune’s loot table. We have the Frostscythe, of course, which people have noted before. But now we also have updated versions of his infamous cloak drops, in tanking, physical DPS, and two forms of spell cloak. The first cloak has spirit, meaning that classes like mages as well as healers that use spirit might like it, while the second has crit, haste and spell power but no spirit, meaning it’s better for shamans and paladins than the spirit one.

Spiritual Guidance: Starting a shadow priest from scratch

June 18th, 2010

Like all shadow priests, Fox Van Allen is a resilient sort. He has few weaknesses: accidentally dropping Shadowform by casting a holy spell; the silver arrow from the far upper left room in level 9; and his own gargantuan ego. By comparison, Dawn Moore’s weaknesses include scratchy sweaters, Shadowfiend bites, and the nasty case of the sniffles she gets when the thermostat dips below 67. The Sunday edition is all about warmth, hugs and kisses. Today is Wednesday.

It was a cold December day when the respawn timer ticked, creating the most elite shadow priest to ever grace the Wednesday version of Spiritual Guidance.

Gold Capped: The basics of selling glyphs

June 18th, 2010

Want to get Gold Capped? Every week, Basil “Euripides” Berntsen takes a short break from building a raiding guild on Drenden (US-A) to write up a guide that will help you make gold. Check out the Call to Auction podcast, and feel free to email Basil any comments, questions or hate mail!

Selling glyphs can be very profitable. It requires a lot of addons to work, and the market reacts to competition differently than other markets. However, a lot of auctioneers got their start with it. I know I did!

Among the three devices and a normal left to play on the line, the last one on the right side of the remote play on OK, not bad at that time, four individuals to fight the insurance point better. Legion Zhang, we usually sing we bow to resist, avoid fine when gas absorption on the line, not the gun sword sing slow output of hatred, is responsible for clearing Xiaoguai group, can be easily adopted in Aion.

Here are tips to sell equipment, installation of equipment out there are legion Zhang out of equipment, if the sell first Do not drive out into the final BOSS speed hit.
