Why you should care about patch 4.3

September 30th, 2011

All the news in the last week has been about patch 4.3. Understandably, we’ve all been going through a lot of excitement. Heck, we’re even going to fight Deathwing soon. Amidst all the hubbub, though, casual and rookie players must be asking, “What’s in this patch for me?”

Huge content patches don’t always mean anything new for rookies and casuals, since new raid tiers are often so busy with new 10-man and 25-man bosses that non-raiders can be forgotten. This is not the case in patch 4.3; for that matter, 4.3 might be the most exciting patch for casual players in a long time. Let’s count the ways in which patch 4.3 will be awesome for the rest of us.

Spoiler warning: Behind this here cut, there may be spoilers, not like the racing kind that hold tiny little cars down to the ground, but of the might-give-away-content sign. Thou hast been warnethed.

The Old Republic accidentally taunts potential testers

What’s the worst thing that can happen when you’re waiting for a chance to play a highly anticipated game? Being inadvertently taunted about the fact that you aren’t in the beta. Star Wars: The Old Republic recently sent out a short survey asking for beta testers to take part, in the hopes of improving the overall testing experience. The only problem was that it wasn’t sent out to testers… it was sent out to everyone who had signed up to potentially be a tester.

A thread on the official forums has already reached absurd length, causing server hiccups and intermittent inability to properly access all areas of the site. It’s unknown how BioWare will apologize for this mishap (aside from a mention on their Facebook page) — certainly it’s not hurting anyone, but it’s probably the last thing that most people not involved in the current beta would like to see. And if you see this message in your email, rest assured, it’s no scam… just poor cross-pollination of mailing lists.

Dark Age of Camelot gears up its newbies

As part of Mythic’s continued efforts to introduce a “New User Journey” experience that’s friendly to Dark Age of Camelot beginners, the studio has turned its attention to the ever-crucial subject of gear. In a new dev diary by DJ Frazier, the dev spells out the problem: “For a new player who wanders into battlegrounds, especially ones like Thidranki or Molvik, they will often find themselves losing almost every fight they encounter, simply because they are playing against people who have had a chance to outfit themselves out in the best equipment they can find for their level range.”

Because the team fears that this armor disparity proves to be a dealbreaker for many newbies, the devs are retuning the gear that players get during their leveling up process to be more durable and competitive on the battlefield.

The two main paths of leveling — PvE questing and RvR battlegrounds — will both offer solid picks of gear when patch 1.110 hits. Players who risk the battlegrounds will find themselves in possession of top-notch weapons and armor, whereas those who choose to quest will find themselves “90% of the way there” with their gear. Hopefully, these changes will create an environment that’s much more welcoming to newcomers to DAoC.

A Mild-Mannered Reporter: Freedom content

So last week, I had meant to cover all of the impressions from the head start of City of Heroes Freedom. What I actually managed to cover was the Paragon Market, which is to the whole of City of Heroes what my nose is to the rest of my face. It’s not the first time that a small part has taken over a column, though, and so we’re bravely forging ahead into the actual content updates that came along with this patch. And let’s be honest, they’re pretty significant — a new zone, a new signature arc, changed power pools, and so forth.

Unfortunately, my time with the new content hasn’t been as extensive as I would have liked, so there are some parts of the update that I really haven’t gotten to sink my teeth into just yet. But I can definitely offer my feedback on what I have seen so far and hopefully rectify the stuff that I’ve still missed out on in the near future. So is this update all that and a bag of chips, or is it somewhat less awesome than advertised?

Foo Fighters to rock the house at BlizzCon 2011

September 29th, 2011

We’ve been waiting for the announcement of who would close out BlizzCon 2011 with an awesome concert, as has been the BlizzCon tradition. This year’s concert headliner will be Foo Fighters with Dave Grohl. It’s a different direction from the previous year’s Ozzy Osbourne and Tenacious D, but it’s going to be a great concert nonetheless. The high-schooler in me is really excited to see Foo Fighters. I feel old now.

You can get access to the concert by purchasing the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket or by attending BlizzCon. Get to the concert hall early if you want a good seat, though. It packs up pretty fast.

Patch 4.3 PTR: New valor point weekly caps, dungeon point rewards

September 28th, 2011

New valor point weekly caps, dungeon point rewards
If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here..

The new 5-man instances, End Time, Well of Eternity, and Hour of Twilight, now award 150 valor points for each random completed, up to seven per week. The valor point cap per week has been increased to 1,000 points — but interestingly, the cap for using the random Dungeon Finder is higher than the actual cap. This could be a bug, or it could be intended to allow players to gain that extra 50 valor points through the Dungeon Finder, but I’m assuming that things just aren’t complete (because after all, this is the PTR).

End Time, the first instance in the sequential set of 5-mans, took my group about 20 to 25 minutes to make our way through. Three bosses and only about seven to eight trash packs later, we were happily finished and 150 valor points richer. This time frame is radically different than the Zul’ heroics we are currently used to, making the play experience, in my experience, more fulfilling in a shorter amount of time. We have not yet run the other two dungeons, but if they are as streamlined as End Time, valor points will be a less stressful experience in the future. We will have more information as it becomes available.

PlanetSide 2 fans, power down your Exo-Suits and take your fingers off your triggers for just one moment. We’ve got an incoming transmission that we think may be of interest. In today’s comm-link, Tramell “T.Ray” Isaac, Senior Art Director on PlanetSide 2, takes some time to give players a look at what can be expected of the aesthetic of the upcoming title.

Isaac discusses the process of coming up with the various faction colors and designs for the original game and goes on to detail what the team is doing to translate those designs over to the new tech of PlanetSide 2. For instance, the Terran Republic’s look is clean, professional, and sleek, whereas the New Conglomerate’s aesthetic is considerably more angular and unrefined. Lastly, he takes a moment to touch on the environments players will be seeing in PlanetSide 2, such as the continent of Indar where players will have to battle not only the opposing factions but fierce dust storms as well. For the full comm-link, click on over to the official PlanetSide 2 site.

Are you the sort of person who absolutely will not rest until you’ve achieved every goal a game has set before you? Are you a Star Wars: The Old Republic fan? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then boy are you in luck.

Everyone’s favorite time-wasters have been confirmed for The Old Republic’s launch. That’s right, we’re talking about achievements. It’s important to note, however, that these aren’t the esoteric, wacky achievements that reward you for dancing on a mailbox with rubber cow udders strapped to your head. The “level one” achievement system will primarily focus on feats of heroism, such as taking down a big boss and other things of that nature. For the past couple of years, EVE Online and World of Tanks have been duking it out to see which game can outfox the other in the hunt for the MMORPG peak concurrent user record. As of this week there may be a new contender for the crown if ZT Online 2′s open beta period is any indication.

The game is a sequel to Giant Interactive’s popular ZT Online martial arts title, and the recent open beta period featured an impressive 435,000 simultaneous players online. Gamasutra has the details, culled from a Giant press release, and the company also indicates that approximately 400 developers have worked on the title over the past three years.

Lost Pages of Taborea: Beating the economy

September 28th, 2011

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

Last week, I expounded on Runes of Magic’s current economic situation. Prices are crazier than the obligatory car salesman’s, only in reverse. That is to say, prices are extremely high for everything right now. It doesn’t stop the game from functioning, but it does put a lot of gear and upgrading tools out of reach for new and free players.

This week in Lost Pages of Taborea, I want to look at a handful of ways that you can continue to enjoy RoM until the storm blows over (if it blows over). Even though prices seem out of hand, you can still get equipped well enough from new quests to start running dungeons. The minigames have been rejuvenated into farming grounds, thanks to the introduction of crimson stats. And even though it is often scoffed at, arena gear is an option for those willing to grind honor points or materials.

Crimson stats

Some of the stats implemented in RoM that I love are crimson stats. These babies are equivalent to bunker stats, which are currently the best stats in the game. You get bunker stats by running Sardo Castle at the furthest end of endgame, and you get crimson stats from minigames. The only requirement is that you be level 50 or above. You need to collect 200 phirius shells, which you use to buy items from vendors located in Varanas Central. You’ll see them lined up outside the bank. Just as with black codex vendors, you’ll be paying for a piece of equipment that will have one randomly selected crimson stat attached to it.

You can run goblin mines, both of Malatina’s games, and treasure hunt every day, provided you spend the requisite 30 phirius tokens to get into them. You’ll be able to snag yourself a crimson stat every two days that way. The shell requirement used to be less, which allowed players to snag one a day, but Runewaker or Frogster must have felt that was a little too easy. Bagging a stat that’s equivalent to stats from the highest dungeon in the game every two days is not too shabby. Even if your current equipment won’t allow you to survive in goblin mines, you can hold daily guild-runs through it. It’s beneficial for everyone, and not just for shells — the treasure chests reward various phirius potions that are always worth stocking up on. Malatina’s survival game scales to your level, but I still find it a bit hard to finish the whole game and win the shells on my Priest/Rogue. If you’re a Mage, your area-of-effect spells will be quite helpful.

Aeria Games announced in a press release today that Eden Eternal will be on the receiving end of a rather large content update sometime in early October. What gives this update such heft? Well, for starters there’s the new Templar class, plus a level cap raise, and oh yeah, player housing.

If five new levels, a new class, and houses aren’t enough for you, get this: You can throw parties! In your house! House parties! Anyway, also included in the update are a variety of high-level areas, alpaca coins (which can be found in high-level zones and redeemed for various prizes), and a new pirate invasion event! Think you’re a pretty good Flyff player? We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but your opportunity to call yourself among the best is pretty well fading. The first Flyff world championship is currently ongoing, with the sixteen finalists now competing for the opportunity to be crowned the best team of players in the world. Two teams have already been eliminated, with livestreaming coverage of the events available on the official championship channel.

But maybe you don’t consider yourself one of the best in the world and don’t usually care about these sorts of events. That’s all right — you’ve still got reason to enjoy it. Players will receive a special item every day just for logging in, as well as another item for every level they gain, from September 28th until October 31st. It’s an all-around excellent opportunity for Flyff fans to enjoy the game, whether struggling for the top spot or just leveling for fun.
