How to level up using the Dungeon Finder

One of the quietly celebrated features in contemporary Cataclysm is the ability to level up entirely using the Dungeon Finder. It’s a little rough in a few places where you cross expansions, around levels 58, 68, and 80ish. But other than those few spots, you can fly through the so-called younger levels without much trouble at all.

While speeding your way to level 85 this way doesn’t require a lot of strategy per se, it still helps immensely if you get your act together beforehand. Consider issues like leveling professions, keeping up with gold, and even how you’ll handle your downtime between queues. Most importantly, once you’re actually inside the dungeon, you should be prepared with some tips to avoid annoying the heck out of your groups.

Dealing with the time between queues

We’ll tackle the space between dungeons first. If you’re not playing a tank or healer, you’ll have at least a few minutes to kill between each dungeon run. This is just the reality of class demographics; the playerbase isn’t evenly divided on a 1:1:3 ration (that’s one tank, one healer, and three DPS characters, see.)

The time between dungeons needs to be spent farming the vital materials to level your professions. While some cloth, ore, and materials can drop inside dungeons, you’re not going to get nearly enough to keep your professions on level. It’s a bummer, but it’s true.

Hit up sites like Wowhead so that you know where your best farming grounds are. Then, while you’re waiting for the dungeon queue to pop, go to town.

EA PC games are rather cheap on Amazon today

You tried to be grateful, you really did. But with every Snuggie, Slanket and Opiate-Laced Cuddle Cocoon you opened, it became abundantly clear that you were getting none of the EA PC games you asked Santa for this Christmas.

Luckily, Amazon is there to set this sad situation right, with deeply discounted, digitally delivered diversions like Dead Space 2 ($4.99), Dragon Age 2 ($5.99), Mass Effect 2 ($4.99) and more. See the full list right here, and try to cut Santa some slack, okay? He always gets depressed this week.

BioWare docs defend subscription model, tease free-to-play iteration of classic IP

Understandably, BioWare heads Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk seem tired of beating the drum for Star Wars: The Old Republic’s subscription-based business model. I didn’t actually bother asking them about their thoughts on subscription vs free-to-play gaming during an interview early last week, but Zeschuk launched into a spirited defense nonetheless, perhaps conditioned by being asked over and over in the run up to SW: TOR’s launch last Monday.

“You look at the online space in general and it’s fragmenting into all these different areas, but the core still works. The subscription model still works,” Zeschuk said. “We know a lot of people say, ‘Oh, everything’s just going free-to-play.’ But that’s just one slice. There’s one slice that’s free-to-play, there’s one slice that’s social, there’s traditional subscription still going.” He was also quick to point out that, “it’s obviously been the free-to-play guys trumpeting this,” though his own company certainly isn’t above working in the free-to-play space, as evidenced by Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes.

One more Diablo III console development job opening for 2011

At this point, the “Diablo III is probably coming to consoles” thing is like a joke without a punchline. We just keep building and building on the premise, but there’s no release in sight. Still, Blizzard keeps giving us material for the setup, this time in the form of another job posting on Gamasutra for a Console Network Senior Software Engineer.

In English, Egon? According to the job listing, “this position is responsible for ensuring the best implementation of sophisticated networking systems on consoles.”

Last time we checked, Diablo III game director Jay Wilson said “we don’t want to announce something until we’re sure.” Blizzard sure does hire a lot of people without being sure!

Big stakes and the end of an expansion

Guys, I don’t know if you know this, but we have just pried the elementium plates off of the back of a dragon so big 25 people can stand on him. After that, we killed the mutant kaiju version of him, who was so big his head alone was bigger than us and four other giant dragons.

I’m sorry, but you have to be 50 kinds of jaded to not enjoy this. One of the things I’ve really enjoyed about patch 4.3 and the Dragon Soul raid is how it unabashedly throws massive, crazy, world-ending doomsday events at you. Between fending off not one but two faceless ones from within bloated abominations, balking an ancient earth elemental giant at the base of Wyrmrest Temple, and defeating Ultraxion and then taking on Deathwing himself, the fights feel enormous. The stakes are huge, and while the supposed saviors of Azeroth spend a lot of time thinking really hard at a McGuffin, we step the heck up.

Whether you are hitting it via Raid Finder, attending your weekly 10-man hardcore raid, or participating as a member of a casual 25-man raid alliance (or anything in between), in terms of pure aesthetics, Dragon Soul is a very satisfying raid in terms of pure scope and sweep.

No better than this bitter end

To be honest, I sincerely hope Blizzard doesn’t try to Sunwell this expansion. Cataclysm must go out on Deathwing’s demise. He was the villain all expansion long, and we put him in the ground. There’s no better end for this expansion than to see the Age of Mortals come rolling around and for us to be the mortals that make that happen. Après Neltharion, le guerre, if you’ll permit me to horribly butcher the helpless French language for a moment.

The Hour of Twilight heroics and the Dragon Soul raid do exactly what they should do and provide us with the end of Deathwing’s story and his attempt to remake the world to his own twisted desires. I’ve never run a set of 5-man instances that so perfectly dovetailed with the raid they were intended to complement, not even the ICC 5s. (Those were admittedly close, however.) Perhaps it’s as simple as finally getting made into another race than a human in a CoT or getting to see the biggest event in the Warcraft setting’s history up close, but I’m in love with these instances.

Combine that with the fun I’m having with transmogrification, a feature I stoutly denied needing for six years, and I honestly haven’t had this much fun in WoW since Ulduar. I don’t know if I’d say Dragon Soul is as well designed as Ulduar was, but I’m on record as finding Ulduar to be one of the most well-done raids in WoW’s history, better than anything before it. But I will say this: Kicking the ever-loving drek out of the last of Deathwing’s forces, then taking the fight to him felt incredibly satisfying. I enjoyed killing Deathwing more than I enjoyed killing Arthas, more than Illidan, more than either time I killed Nefarian or Ragnaros.

Out with a bang

This is a seven-year-old game. The fact that it can contain a fight like Madness of Deathwing, that a raid like Dragon Soul can be this big in terms of pure engagement, that in eight fights we get to save the bloody world and everyone in it is pretty dang awesome. This isn’t If we don’t stop Arthas, he’ll eventually destroy us all; this is Stop Deathwing right now or the planet blows up — stakes we haven’t seen since Algalon. And it was a blast to do it, too.

This is fairly awesome. I can only hope Mists can take this energy and run with it. Whatever your feelings about Cataclysm (I had some serious issues with it at start), no one can deny it went out big.

Kojima the producer open to MGS remake, Kojima the creator not so much

December 27th, 2011

Konami’s recent Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is an odd product for shipping without anything called “Metal Gear Solid HD” in the box. One part of series creator Hideo Kojima views the omission as a call to be answered, while another is eager to spend less time in the past.

“There are a lot of people wanting remakes of the original, and as producer I want to answer those calls,” Kojima tells Official PlayStation Magazine. “But as a creator I’m not very interested in going back. If we were to do it, it would have to be a total remake – the only thing that would be the same would be the story. If it happened at some point I would stay as a producer, but would have to hand off most of the actual creating.”

We’ve heard of Metal Gear Solid’s seemingly inevitable continuation before, and of Kojima’s wearying dance between director and producer. The first Metal Gear Solid is satisfactory in being “the game I wanted to make,” says Kojima, who sounds like he’d rather not meddle and make it once more — never mind that it’s already been redone in MGS: Twin Snakes with the help of Silicon Knights and Nintendo. “If you bring the gameplay up to modern standards, then you lose a bit of the original game. It was a game made for a certain era – not just the story, but the controls and everything about it reflect that era in which the game was made.”

That’s right. Back in the day, there wasn’t enough visual fidelity to tell whose footprints those were — and we liked it.

RuneScape rings in the new year with 39 manhunts

It’s almost over. RuneScape’s year-long celebration of its 10th anniversary is coming to a close, and Jagex has great, wonderful plans to end it with a bang. Naturally, this translates into “developer manhunt” because why not?

During New Year’s Eve, players are encouraged to be on alert as the clock strikes midnight 39 times in each of the time zones across the world. Every time this happens, a special moderator’s in-game location will be made known through Facebook, on Twitter and in RuneScape itself. Those who can hunt down and find this mod in time will be treated to a special celebration.

The first clock to strike midnight on New Year’s Eve is in Tokelau on Saturday, December 31st, at 5:00 a.m. EST. RuneScape players may wish to note that not all 39 “midnights” occur on the hour (this helpful website lays out the precise order).

Display changes for graphics and levels in Star Trek Online

December 22nd, 2011

If you want to buy some EVE iskor EVE item, please click here.

As the free-to-play conversion for Star Trek Online continues to approach, the game’s development team continues to make more last-minute polishes. As outlined in the most recent entry in the Path to F2P blog series, one improvement directly pertains to the game’s graphics, putting in DirectX 11 support for players whose cards can support the display mode. While it won’t offer a performance increase for every player, there are players who have reported big jumps in FPS with DirectX 11 on while testing on the Tribble server.

The other major improvement deployed to the test server is a change to the game’s rank display. Previously, the game displayed levels by rank and grade — a player would move from Commander 10 (level 29) to Captain 1 (level 30), which was evocative of the setting but a bit hard to process at a glance. So the display has been trimmed up and improved, with player level displaying as a rank followed by the level (the previous example would now display as Commander 29, then Captain 30). No actual levels have been lost — it’s just a change to ensure that new players have an easier time understanding the level differences.

Dawntide’s beta server is officially closed for business. As we told you earlier this month, indie studio Working as Intended has decided to suspend the fantasy sandbox’s open beta phase in order to focus on a large-scale gameworld revamp.

WAI says that the servers will be offline “for a period of one to two months,” and the company intends to keep players posted via weekly news updates and screenshots of the work in progress.

Dawntide is a non-linear open-world title featuring skill-based advancement and a deep crafting system. You can check out our first impressions of the beta client via Some Assembly Required.

Are you ready for another free-to-play martial arts MMO from China? Ready or not, Perfect World Entertainment is producing a title called Fantasy Condor Heroes, according to a news blurb at Gamasutra.

If you’re a student of Chinese popular culture, that name may ring a bell since it’s taken from a wuxia novel called Return of the Condor Heroes. The book was written by author Louis Cha (under the pen name Jin Yong) and originally serialized in the late 1950s. Thus far Perfect World has not made any feature- or gameplay-related details available, nor do we know when Fantasy Condor Heroes will be released.

TERA producer’s letter discusses new launcher, development progress

A new holiday edition producer’s letter has been published on the official TERA site, and in it Chris Hager announces that he is currently using the studio’s new launcher to log in to the game. Why is this such a big deal? Hager explains that it “represents a huge leap for us here at En Masse.” He goes on to tell how, over the past year, the team has worked “directly and intimately with the Bluehole development team to… add features that appeal to western gamers.”

But why is the new launcher so important? Because it’s one of the features that the studio built from the ground up. Hager also notes that the game has been in alpha for “about 4 months” and that this week is the last week of alpha testing. He says the team is also looking forward to “the next step in TERA’s journey toward launch next spring.” Here’s to hoping that next step is a beta test. For the full letter, just click on over to the official TERA site.
