BioWare doctors discuss Mass Effect MMO

The fast-approaching Mass Effect 3 hype bomb doesn’t have much to do with MMOs, except maybe it does. Gamespot cornered BioWare doctors Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka and asked the duo point-blank about a Mass Effect MMO, and the answer might surprise you.

“It’s daunting, but the neat thing is it would lend itself to a different type of gameplay. It’s fun to think about,” Zeschuk told the website. Does that mean that the so-called fourth pillar of MMO story won’t factor as heavily into the theoretical title as it does in Star Wars: The Old Republic?

It’s anyone guess at this point, but Muzyka offers a further fanboy nugget that hints at the possibility of a new direction for BioWare MMOs. “When you deliver a game, and you deliver it for a player, you have to capture what they think is the possibility space,” he explains. “You need to let them do everything they think they should do, and you can’t block them from doing anything they think they should be able to do. You have to nail all the features and content that should be in that possibility space.”

It’s no secret that Sony Online Entertainment has been in more than a little hot water in the wake of the recently announced region locks that were to be put in place following the studio’s deal with ProSiebenSat.1, but there may still be a silver lining on the horizon. SOE president John Smedley tweeted earlier today that the studio has “come up with a plan to allow ALL players to play on any servers they want.” While details are still to come, this should be incredibly welcome news for players of SOE titles who weren’t looking forward to playing without their international friends.

Smedley promises us that there are “more details to follow,” so stay tuned and hopefully we’ll have some idea of what’s in the works before too long.

Performance tweaks coming to Fallen Earth

We announced just last week that popular post-apocalyptic sandbox title Fallen Earth had been released on Steam. Well, opening that can of worms seems to have taken its toll on many of the game’s more populated areas, causing performance issues and crashes for some players. Needless to say, GamersFirst is not about to let that fly.

In fact, GamersFirst’s Napalm stopped by the game’s official forums earlier today in order to notify players of some small tweaks that are being made to the game in order to solve these performance issues. For starters, Embry Crossroads and all starter towns are being moved onto “much, much beefier hardware,” which “will have an immediate impact, and should decrease the amount of lag that players are seeing in those areas.” Improvements are also being made to server memory management, and the studio is even upgrading to a “more capable branch of the xScape engine” that should hopefully allow the game to handle a higher number of players in any given area. For the full details on the improvements, just click on over to the official announcement below.

Rumor: Blizzard embracing F2P for unannounced game

Rumor has it that Blizzard is hopping on the free-to-play crazy train. Develop reports that the company “will embrace free-to-play and will apply the model in an upcoming, as yet unannounced game.”

The website says that Blizzard has declined to comment in an official capacity, and the site’s source could not provide more details. It’s been speculated that World of Warcraft’s recent subscription losses, the fact that DOTA is free-to-play, and the game’s unlimited free trial though level 20 all indicate a shift in Blizzard’s business model mindset.

COO Paul Sams also paid lip service to F2P at BlizzCon last October, saying that F2P “certainly is possible, if we find ourselves in that circumstance, or if we come up with a game where we think that’s the right business model, the most appropriate for players to experience it.”

Could the long-awaited Project Titan MMO be Blizzard’s first F2P offering, or is a completely new title in the works? We’ll update you as the story develops.

EVE Online Senior Producer Jonathan Lander says now that some of the nitty-gritty reorganization within CCP has been completed, the devs “are back in the serious business of making EVE better and better.”

Citing several small releases over the next few months as proof, Lander lets loose with the announcement of the game’s next big expansion: Inferno. Inferno will hit EVE “just before the summer” and will attempt to bring EVE’s conflicts to a whole new level. Concord-sanctioned warfare and factional warfare will be getting tweaks as a result of this focus. More specific details about Inferno will be revealed at the EVE Fanfest in March.

And while he won’t go into specifics (yet), Lander says that CCP will reveal “more concrete steps” of how both EVE Online and DUST 514 are connected in the next couple of months.

Funcom has decided to push back The Secret World’s launch by a couple of months. The Norwegian development firm originally intended its horror-conspiracy MMO to ship in April, but a new press release has targeted June 19th instead.

Creative director Ragnar Tørnquist says the new launch window will allow Funcom to make the title that much more compelling. “Allowing for even more time to polish the game really shows just how much faith Funcom as a company has in The Secret World, and how committed we are to making it the best it can be,” he explains.

Tørnquist also hints at further beta opportunities for both fans and curiosity seekers. “The additional time will also allow us to carry out even more quality beta testing, and soon we will also be announcing several public beta events where hundreds of thousands of gamers will get to test the game prior to launch,” he says.

The Secret World is a skill-based MMO set in the modern age. It mixes traditional MMO progression with a unique skill deck system and story-driven questing.

Ironclad announced Sins of a Dark Age today, its follow-up to the epic space armada strategy game, Sins of a Solar Empire. The new game will be a free-to-play project, blending classic real-time strategy with the MOBA genre (League of Legends, DOTA 2).

Players work in teams, which consist of one commander and up to four heroes, who can face off against other players or AI. The commander is responsible for building the base, directing units and positioning defenses. The commander can also call upon “Realm Powers” to turn the tide of battle. Heroes have their own set of powers, but are tasked with assisting the commander’s units and capturing resources.

More details should shake out at the Game Developers Conference in two weeks. The game will begin its beta this summer.

SOE opens up about multi-year European partnership

While we heard about Sony Online Entertainment’s partnership with ProSiebenSat.1 Games Group to publish MMOs in Europe last month, the specific details of this deal were lurking under a cloud cover of mystery and speculation — until now. SOE has posted a quite lengthy FAQ about this partnership and what it entails for the future of the studio in the Old World.

According to the deal, ProSiebenSat.1 has the license to officially publish eight of SOE’s titles in 40 countries. These MMOs include DC Universe Online, EverQuest II, Free Realms, PlanetSide 2, and EverQuest Next (although not, oddly enough, EverQuest itself). SOE hopes that ProSiebenSat.1′s location and expertise will result in in a greater audience for its games as well as more support and better localization for those under ProSiebenSat.1′s umbrella. SOE even hopes that the partnership will result in “special content” for European players.

Previously, SOE had distribution agreements for Europe but nothing on the scale of what it now has with ProSiebenSat.1. It looks like EU players will need to transfer their accounts and characters over to ProSiebenSat.1′s domain, although SOE promises that this will be an easy process. It’s also important to note that these games and their servers will not interact with their North American counterparts, effectively separating the communities.

Next Metal Gear Solid targeted for ‘high-end consoles’ and PC

Joystiq can exclusively reveal that the next Metal Gear Solid will feature intense zero-gravity chess, cybernetic nano-crocodiles, mirror universe machinations and a trash-compactor escape scene that will serve both as Star Wars homage and finger-wagging sermon on humanity’s crushing impact on the environment. Well, provided the Joystiq staff are hired to work on the game.

Kojima Productions has unveiled an extensive list of available jobs, hinged on evolving the in-development Fox Engine and, more importantly, bringing the next game in the Byzantine franchise to life. According to the page introduction, Hideo Kojima and co. are on the hunt for engineers, artists, designers and a brand manager to handle “the latest Metal Gear Solid targeted for high-end consoles and PC.”

If you think you can bolster the Fox Engine with new rendering tech, create “fantastic game content,” or cultivate MGS “as a global mega-hit franchise in all regions,” you should swing by the Game Developers Conference Career Pavilion between March 6 and March 9 and make yourself known.

We might nudge you out of the way as we deliver our own game concept, which we’re tentatively calling “Metal 6ear Solid: Sublimation Synthesis.” Don’t you just love the sound of that, Kojima?

Skyrim beta update 1.4.26 live on Steam

Bethesda’s approach to avoiding “latest patch does horrible thing,” which is to publicly beta test its updates, is paying off. Skyrim version 1.4.26 is now downloadable from Steam, and the general working theory is: if it breaks the game, it’s almost your fault for downloading it in the first place. (We jest!)

Bethesda warns that only players affected by the issues found after the break should download the update. Remember to back up any save files if you plan to go down the beta route.

SWTOR GUILD: The Pink Lightsaber

If you want to buy SWTOR Credits, Star Wars:The Old Republic Credits,SWTOR Gold,Buy SWTOR Gold, please click here.

This guide will answer the question: “How do I get the special ingredient for the pink lightsaber?” or as BioWare calls it, magenta – to me it’s pink.

First of all you will need the recipe for this crystal, which is a drop of the level 50 world boss on Belsavis called The Primal Destroyer. It has a chance to drop three different schematics, all being pink color crystals. The three schematics are:

1. Schematic: Advanced Magenta Lethal Crystal

2. Schematic: Advanced Magenta Resonating Crystal

3. Schematic: Advanced Intrepidity Crystal

I have not yet encountered this world boss, so I cannot tell you how it plays out, but I am told it is not too hard, tho you need quite a few to kill it. The schematics are Bind on Pick-up, but the crystals are not, which means if you have a trusted artificer who can craft these, you only need to get the special ingredient to do so, which this guide will tell you how to obtain.

The PS Vita has a system update lined up for tonight, preceding Wednesday’s mainstream launch. Early adopters can update their systems to firmware version 1.61, which adds a Maps application to the home screen, allows for video recording in the Photos application, and allows for any ratings you make in the PlayStation Store to appear on Facebook. Additionally, the Discoveries screen now lists up to 100 players, as well as the number of times they’ve been seen.

The Content Manager Assistant app has been updated, and is available now both as a Windows and Mac download. Even if you’ve got version 1.60 already, you should make the jump to 1.61, as Sony says there are some systemwide performance improvements too. The latest firmware can be downloaded on the console over Wi-Fi, or can be updated from a PC or Mac with the Content Manager Assistant.
