The latest client update to Code Club AB’s construction-oriented sandbox title Wurm Online brings a cornucopia of new features to the game, but perhaps none so interesting as the addition of proximity voice chat. That’s right, players will now be able to vocally communicate with any players in the immediate vicinity without the use of third-party applications like Ventrilo or Mumble. Have you ever wanted to gather up your village group, sit around a fire, and tell stories or just enjoy a bit of idle banter? Maybe typing “oh god help there’s a rabid pachyderm devouring my face” just isn’t expedient enough when there’s a rabid pachyderm devouring your face. Either way, players now have access to proximity voice chat, an updated UI, and much more.

It’s another Thursday, and another week for Gamebreaker.TV’s This Week in MMO. What’s in store for this installment? Massively’s very own Editor-in-Chief Shawn Schuster and Community Manager Rubi Bayer join regular host Gary Gannon in “mature” discussion about MMOs.

First up, Gary, Shawn, and Rubi run through the topic of the mature rating in MMOs such as CCP’s World of Darkness. Then our intrepid hosts guide us through the magical and technological starting zone for the Asura in Guild Wars 2. Also, saving Metropolis just became cheaper — free, in fact! Shawn and Rubi discuss DC Universe Online’s entry to the free-to-play market. Where is the future of MMO-subscription models going? Freemium? When Shawn spoke to SOE President John Smedley, Smed certainly favored it.

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

Moving on to another action-based game, Rubi reveals TERA’s PR speak within its endgame Q&A statements, and Shawn admits that the small raid size in The Secret World isn’t quite big enough for him.

Star Trek Online hosts a play night on the test server

May 24th, 2010

The team for Star Trek Online has been working on cleaning up bugs, deploying new features, and generally getting the game prepped for the upcoming Season 1.2 patch, which promises a variety of additions and improvements to the game. In order to help facilitate the testing of new features — and to enjoy getting into the mix with the players — the development team is going to be hosting one of Cryptic’s frequent play nights with the general populace.

Unlike normal, this night isn’t taking place on the live servers, but on the Tribble test server. From 4-6 PM PST (7-9 PM EST) on May 24th, the developers will be on the server, taking part in PvE content as well as on the PvP maps. Whether you want the developers to hear about your great idea for new task forces, want to tell them how much you want the game to have new content, or are just still recovering from the series finale of Lost, any player with an active Star Trek Online account is encouraged to mix it up with the development team.

Battle.net will integrate with Facebook

May 6th, 2010

Blizzard has just announced that you will be able to pull your Facebook friends into your Battle.net friends list. They will be testing this functionality soon in the StarCraft II beta. Since we know that the Battle.net functionality will come to WoW before Cataclysm, that means we’ll be able to import our Facebook friends into our WoW friends list at that time. This is just another example of the worlds of Facebook and MMOs colliding.

Vaneras — Battle.net Facebook IntegrationThe action taking place on the battlefield is just one part of the StarCraft II experience — we’re also working to make sure that you can easily connect, communicate, and play with your friends. To help accomplish that, the new version of Battle.net will offer integration with Facebook. This new functionality will start off by allowing you to quickly import Facebook friends into your Battle.net friends list, and additional features will be added over time.

source

Of course, the integration will be voluntary. This announcement does not mean that all those friends you have in Facebook just to increase your mafia will automatically know you are playing WoW. You will choose if you want to integrate and which friends to import.

EVE Online Tyrannis trailer released in HD

May 6th, 2010

EVE Online players have been following the build-up to EVE’s Tyrannis expansion with a great deal of anticipation. The expansion is set to launch in just under two week’s time on May 18th and brings with it the ability to colonise and industrialise planets. Here at Massively, we’re even celebrating Tyrannis with a series of contests each Saturday leading up to its launch.

The official Tyrannis expansion page has been up and running since mid April, giving players a peek at what features to expect on release. The one thing we’ve all been waiting for is the official expansion trailer. CCP have a history of producing incredible trailers for EVE and the new Tyrannis trailer is no exception. It seems to take some of the best ideas from EVE’s latest fan masterpiece “Future Proof” and develop them further. With CCP’s usual level of professional polish and dramatisation, this is a trailer that has to be seen.

LOVE adding first major expansion

May 4th, 2010

We’ve not heard a lot from Eskil Steenberg since his MMO LOVE launched last month, but it must be going well, as he has unveiled the first major expansion for the game yesterday. AVAIL will be a free expansion, bringing the welcome addition of character progression to the game: “Many players feel that while enjoyable the game is pointless. You build only to have it be destroyed, and they would like to see a more long term goal to pursue. AVAIL will add character progression but in a way that is very different from how other games implement it.”

LOVE will continue its basic goal of player cooperation in that you “level up” by working with and gaining the respect of other players. The interesting thing here is that it’s a constantly shifting design — just because you have a good working relationship with player 1, that means nothing if player 1 logs out and you begin working with player 2. If you don’t already have a good working relationship with player 2 you’ll need to cultivate one as part of your progression. You can find all the details on the expansion on the LOVE site.

Warcraft movie update: Metzen says “still getting it together”

April 29th, 2010

It’s been months since we’ve heard a peep on the Hollywood news lines about the Warcraft film or director Sam Raimi. When Spider-man 4 was canceled in January, there was speculation that Raimi might be headed to the Warcraft film next. A month later, we reported a rumor that Raimi’s next project might not be Warcraft, but a film adaptation of The Shadow. Seeing as Sony let the rights to the film lapse in March, it doesn’t sound like The Shadow is in any state of serious development; but it does raise the question of what exactly is Raimi up to right now?

While we still have no exact answer to that, Chris Metzen gave us a small update on the film in an interview over at vg247 published yesterday. When asked if a considerable amount of time was being spent on the movie, Metzen replied, “I wouldn’t say “considerable” at all just yet. We’ve been through a number of story meetings, and we’re still kind of getting it together with Raimi and his team and jamming on themes that we want to chase.”

Sadly, the interview didn’t reveal many specifics, but Metzen responded favorably when asked if he was concerned about dissappointing Warcraft fans: “Nobody wants to screw it up: we all want to hit it hard and have it be something that is as resonant and canonical as it can be. But given what Warcraft is, with all these moving parts, we’re going to have to take some liberties here and there. I’m under no illusions about that fact … ”

It’s hard to draw any new or concrete conclusions from the interview, but it’s good to see that the movie is still being talked about. WoW.com will keep you updated as we learn more.

WoW Magazine polls the community

April 26th, 2010

WoW Magazine is looking for some new information, helpful hints, and feedback in the form of two polls just added on the official Warcraft forums. What’s in it for you? The best responses they receive will be incorporated into the magazine’s features as quotes, and people whose suggestions are used will have their character fully credited for the quote they provide.

The first is a request for tips, hints, and other useful information for the “Battlegrounds Back to Basics” feature, regarding Eye of the Storm in an upcoming issue:

BashiokThe industrious gnomes and goblins at World of Warcraft Official Magazine are currently working on the next issue. One of its regular features is “Battlegrounds Back to Basics” – this time around covering Eye of the Storm

As part of that feature, we’re looking for hints and tips from EotS veterans. Is that you? If so, please feel free to post your favorite one-line strategies, tactics and tricks that help give you the winning edge. They can either be team oriented, or even class specific. The best suggestions will be incorporated into the feature as quotes – and of course your character will be fully credited. Remember – these should be straightforward one-liners – we’re not looking for long paragraphs packed with intricate details.

Thanks in advance to all!

The second involves the upcoming beta for Cataclysm, whether or not people are avoiding it and what those that are opting-in are looking forward to among other things. Is this a hint that we’ll see the beta for Cataclysm before we see the next issue of Warcraft Magazine? Who knows — but check out the post for more information on what kind of feedback they’re looking for:

BashiokThe gang at World of Warcraft Official Magazine would like to know if you plan on participating in the Cataclysm beta. What about it gets you excited? What should people know before opting-in and participating? Are you purposefully avoiding the beta and all information? Do you love to hunt down bugs, do you thrive in a world of the unknown, or do you despise the impermanence of a testing environment? Tell us about your best experiences from past tests, missed opportunities, your dos and don’ts, your beta hopes, and anything in-between! The best posts will be incorporated into the feature as quotes, and your character will be fully credited.

Thanks in advance to all!

Cataclysm Class Changes: Mage

April 12th, 2010

what the mage class will be like in Cataclysm. These changes are straight from Blizzard, and they provide great insight into where the designers want to take things. Please remember that these changes are for the beta and will very likely be modified as the expansion nears release.

Some of the major highlights:

Flame Orb (available at level 81): Inspired by Prince Taldaram’s abilities in Ahn’kahet and Icecrown Citadel, this spell allows the mage to cast a flaming orb that travels in front in a straight line, sending beams that cause fire damage to passing targets. Once it’s cast, the mage is free to begin casting other spells as the Flame Orb travels. While the spell will be useful to any spec, Fire mages will have talents that improve it, possibly causing the Flame Orb to explode when it reaches its destination. Time Warp (level 83): Grants a passive Haste effect much like Bloodlust or Heroism to party or raid members. It also temporarily increases the mage’s own movement speed. Time Warp will be exclusive with Bloodlust and Heroism, meaning you can’t benefit from both if you’ve got the Exhaustion debuff, though the movement-speed increase will still work even when under the effects of Exhaustion. Wall of Fog (level 85): Creates a line of frost in front of the mage, 30 yards from end to end. Enemies who cross the line are snared and take damage. The mana cost will be designed to make Wall of Fog efficient against groups, not individuals. This spell is intended to give mages a way to help control the battlefield, whether the mage is damaging incoming enemies (Blizzard can be channeled on top of Wall of Fog) or protecting a flag in a Battleground. 10-second duration. 30-second cooldown. Arcane Missiles is being redesigned to become a proc-based spell. Whenever the mage does damage with any spell, there is a chance for Arcane Missiles to become available, similar to how the warrior’s Overpower works. We are planning to remove spells that don’t have a clear purpose. Amplify Magic, Dampen Magic, Fire Ward, and Frost Ward are being removed from the game, and we may remove more.

If you could mix-and-match classes and MMOs, what would they be?

April 11th, 2010

Sometimes, a love for a MMO is soured by a disdain for the class list available. Sometimes, you can’t help but to fall for a sassy class with a twinkle in its eye, but you can’t stand the game it’s in. When this happens, it’s a tragedy of Romeo and Juliet proportions — an attraction that is destined to be ripped apart by opposing forces.

So by casting reality to the wind, let us ask you this: if you could play a particular class in a different MMO in which it resides, what would it be? What mix-and-match combination would spark your interest? Would you take LotRO’s minstrel through the lands of Azeroth? Is the thought of one of City of Heroes’ superpowered combinations flying through Fallen Earth’s wasteland appealing? Would EQ2′s Shadowknights mix well with Age of Conan’s rough-and-tumble setting? Do you dream of piloting a STO starship in EVE’s universe?

Still more Japanese leaks for Final Fantasy XIV

April 8th, 2010

There are male mito’qe and female roegadyn in Final Fantasy XIV. There’s no word currently on whether or not they’ll be playable, but the latest information put out via Famitsu indicates that they are there, at least.

For some players, simply knowing that the somewhat awkwardly monogendered races from Final Fantasy XI will be reaching the wild shores of sexual dimorphism will make the latest bits of news palatable. Others would rather hear about the actual mechanics of playing the game — and luckily for everyone, that’s included with the information as well. It’s confirmed that zone transitions are seamless, as is the background music (most likely with careful crossfades). There are stat differences between the much-discussed clans, but they’re not a huge deal — a far bigger difference is every class getting early access to teleportation and warp spells to make transportation less problematic.

We even get a bit of meta-information telling us that testing on the Playstation 3 should be coming in another couple phases. While there’s nothing world-shattering, the picture being paiinted is increasingly alluring, and it’s hard to argue Final Fantasy XIV isn’t learning a lot from its predecessor.

Clarification on Cataclysm dispel mechanics

April 7th, 2010

Yesterday’s news on the upcoming dispel mechanic changes coming in Cataclysm raised a lot of questions among players worried about how the changes will affect their particular class. Today, Zarhym clarified some of these changes surrounding dispel mechanics, particularly how it will work with the shaman and druid classes. To the concerns about requiring talent points being spent for particular buffs — something that Blizzard has said time and time again they wanted to move away from — Zarhym stated, “This is specifically an example of a utility talent we were referring to. Rather than going for all of the “increase your damage/healing by X” talents of today, you’ll more often be choosing from talents which will add utility to existing spells and abilities, or just plain give you new spells or abilities. ”

As to the concerns that the changes were suggesting that PvP is now going to take precedence over PvE, Zarhym had this to say:

“No one here approached dispel mechanics with the idea that PvP takes precedence over PvE, so there’s little reason to object in that regard. The changes to class systems in Cataclysm we’ve announced thus far are being proposed to make the game better, both in terms of PvP and PvE. Mind you, we have a host of changes planned for every class we plan to share in the future. Before providing overviews of our goals for each class though, we wanted to give you a look at some changes to more broad systems.

While the feedback is welcomed, I’d caution players to consider this information with an open mind, rather than directly translating the proposed changes into the class systems of Wrath of the Lich King. ”

In addition, Zarhym had a few other clarifications to make; check them out after the break.
