UK’s largest video games retailer, the appropriately named GAME, is taking a crack at the ever-widening digital market. The retailer introduced a new feature for players looking to purchase content online called GAMEwallet, with plans to offer gift cards for the system in 2012.
By giving players incentive to focus on just one account that can be used to fund multiple MMOs and other games, GAME is hoping that GAMEwallet will become the one-stop shopping center for gamers. Several MMO studios are on board with the program, with titles like RuneScape and APB Reloaded fundable through it. GAME is targeting a majority of its customers who don’t use debit and credit cards to buy digital content because of security concerns.
GAME’s Tricia Brennan sees move as not just a smart one, but a necessary one: “The digital games market is growing fast, but two things are holding it back: the reliance on customers using credit or debit cards online, and the lack of a one-stop shop offering advice across a wide range of titles from different publishers. We’re about to change that.”
GAME is currently struggling financially, as it recently announced losses of over $81 million from sales.

So it’s a slow news day in the MMO world of games today so I figured I would put together a top ten list for upcoming MMOs for this year and next year. This list was a little difficult to put together. First I put the the obvious ones on the list that was kind of a no-brainer but I wanted to fill up all ten slots so I really had to dig to come up with the remaining slots.
Remember I could only pick games that are not yet released, only upcoming MMOs. Two of these games are a little bias on my part… you’ll see what I mean. This list is going to change often as new information on these games is released and after a game is released I’ll have to update the list to fill up the slot for upcoming game.

I reported when it went offline, and it looks like The Undermine Journal is back. It’s added a bunch of realms, to boot. Additionally, the development blog post linked above has a few tidbits about some features coming down the pipes, including Twitter direct messages as a potential vehicle for market notifications. Also exciting is the possibility of a raw auction house feed being made available (for free), so other sites could make AH mashups of their own without having to redesign the armory crawler.
This site is an amazing tool for stalking the auction house efficiently when you can’t be directly in front of an AH. Combined with the Remote Auction House, this allows people to keep a semi-persistent presence on the market without needing to be in game all day. It’s also invaluable for researching new markets and strategizing against your serious competitors. In fact, the only feature people have really voiced a lot of concern about is the seller activity page. The heat map can tell people when it’s worth logging in to undercut, which can lead to people feeling like they’re being unfairly targeted. The current items section tells interested players what other markets they could target someone in.
The standard response to concerns is that this is all just data, and what people do with it is not the fault of site that makes the data accessible. There is no privacy in an open market, and just like you can hardly be upset if someone puts a photo of a sale sign in your storefront window on the internet, you can’t get upset if a site like the UJ makes everything you have for sale available through a public interface.
Personally, I like being able to stalk my competition more than I’m afraid of what they might do by stalking me. After all, there’s only one of me and at least 50 of them. Additionally, I like to practice what I preach about market agility, and I like to think that every time a competitor closes a door on me, I can find a new door.

We then need to split things up into how they affect the spell. First we look at spellpower bonuses, damage bonuses based on passive talents, buffs and debuffs, which all need to be handled separately. Then we top everything off with critical damage multipliers, factor in Elemental Overload, and top it all off with haste.

As of the latest patch to the Cataclysm beta servers some models are seeing more updates, including Malfurion Stormrage, pictured above. Either spending too much time in the Emerald Dream has some seriously adverse effects or ingesting too much morrowgrain causes some really weird biological errors, but Stormrage is now sporting a brand new pair of wings, some serious tattoos or tribal markings, and is now pittypatting around on little bear feet. Check out MMO-Champion for the other new models, including a revamped Twilight Ascendant and what is possibly the new goblin mount, as well as preview shots of the new dungeon sets for casters.
As for Malfurion Storkmrage and his new model, all I can say is that I am sincerely hoping we see him get into a fistfight with Varian Wrynn.

Four times per year, CCP Lead Economist Dr. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson and his team of researchers publish the Quarterly Economic Newsletter (QEN). In addition to providing trackable statistics on EVE Online’s in-game market, each issue focuses heavily on analysing one particular topic. This quarter’s report focuses on wormhole systems and the state of the tech 3 market. Updated player demographics show more and more players entering wormhole space, with a drop in the number of characters in high-security space. Statistics for the number of jumps in wormhole space over the past year show a similar trend of growing activity.
This QEN provides some enlightening graphs on the popularity of various tech 3 offensive subsystems and how tech 3 material costs have changed in EVE over the past year. Perhaps most illuminating is the sharp rise in the use of tech 3 strategic cruisers in locations that put them at risk. While the majority are being flown in mission hubs and market systems, over 35% were found outside the safety of high-security space. In addition to this quarter’s focus on wormholes, the report contains the usual graphs tracking in-game prices, trade volumes, ships in use and other useful metrics.

Burning with desire to slip into the Cataclysm beta test, grab a goblin or worgen and run wild? Not these players. We asked readers to tell us why they do or do not want to participate in Cataclysm beta testing — and while plenty affirmed their beta aspirations with desperately ardent pleas, we found ourselves more intrigued by the reasoning of those who said they weren’t interested. Why would they pass up this opportunity of a gaming lifetime? What could they possibly hope to be doing for fun, instead? Read on to hear the opinions of three players on why, when it comes to Cataclysm beta testing, they will be opting out.

Can I have 5 gold please? I need it to train my new level of skills. Woah, did you just put two hundred and twelve thousand gold into an open trade window?! Wait, where are you going? Wait!! Get back here! I’m not letting you get out of trade range! Oh my god, all this scrub has to do is click “trade” and I’ll be able to buy every single mount in the game!! I am not letting him out of range. I wonder why he’s wearing a monocle? Hey, he’s jumping down to the docks! I’d better keep up with him. Hmm, he’s taking an Elixir of Water Breathing? Strange. This guy must be a gold farmer or something. “/g ZOMG I’m gonna be rich guys!” Oh, you want to go for a swim? I don’t care where you go, I’m not closing this window or letting you get out of range. You can’t get away from me by swimming under a boat. Or into a cave. Or into that … what the H-E-double hockey-sticks? “You are dead”? How? This guy is in the same faction as me! Oh.
Professions are expensive! Getting a crafting skill to 450 involves geting all kinds of finnicky odd-ball mats from content that nobody ever runs these days, which typically means paying a whole lot for them. On top of it, all the stuff you make is pretty much valueless, and often fetches more at the vendor than it will in the auction house. What can you do to help turn these lemons into lemonade?
First off, it helps if you’re popular, smart, and patient. Popular people have friends who have tradeskills that might be able to help stem the losses, smart people have addons that can provide them with valuable information, and patient people are not at the mercy of low supply.

Zarhym has just released the Patch 3.3.5 PTR Patch Notes. Patch 3.3.5 will introduce the Ruby Sanctum, an all new level 80 raid dungeon located below the Wrymrest Temple in Dragonblight. Other major features of 3.3.5 include:
The new Real ID system / Cross-server, cross-game, cross-faction friend chat / Battle.net 2.0 is active for testing on the PTR. There is a new “pop out” option for chat channels, placing them in their own tab of the chat window. The new “pop out” option can also apply for whisper conversations with an individual player. Remember, these patch notes are only for the PTR, and they often change. Don’t expect them to be exactly like this when 3.3.5 is released to the live servers.

The people behind Ryzom have been hinting for days that something big was on the way, leaving players speculating about what it could be. There were a lot of guesses flying around out there, but it’s safe to say nobody saw this coming: Ryzom is now open source.
The introduction of Ryzom Core came this morning, which means that all source code and artistic assets are out there for the world. That’s right, you can now create your very own Atys with Ryzom’s blessing and completely free of charge. The game itself is still up and running — this is an addition rather than a replacement, so Ryzom fans can rest assured that their game isn’t going anywhere.
This development is certain to leave many wondering how this works, what it means, and of course why the decision was made. The Ryzom team handled as much of that as they could preemptively, setting up a FAQ covering quite a bit of ground. The Free Software Foundation got in on the act as well by further explaining what this means and how it all works.
