Group Finder

- Leaving a Group Finder group where all other members have disconnected will no longer cause players to be temporarily locked out of Group Finder.

- Flashpoints and Operations will no longer occasionally reset and eject players who have recently used Group Finder for a replacement member.

PvP

- Ballistic and Knockback effects no longer occasionally de-sync the character’s location, which could cause characters to not interact properly with the world (such as being able to be hit by melee attacks when the character appeared to be out of range).

Diablo3 Auction House Turns Players Into Slaves?

June 30th, 2012

If you want to buy some Diablo 3 Gold USA Diablo 3 Powerleveling please click here.

If you’d like to read a wildly-biased rant against the business practices of the Diablo III Real Money Auction House, you’re in luck, since one has just popped up. The author structures it like an unethical lawyer offering a vicious closing argument; it’s close enough to the truth that you can’t point to any outright lies or errors, but he shades everything away from objective reality, puts the worst possible interpretation on all events and motivations, discards all mitigating facts, etc.

For bonus points the comments are full of haters who lap it up and shout at anyone who points out some of the dubious claims. A quote to give you a taste of things, and you can read the rest if you feel the need. Thanks to Paul for the tip.

In other games, where black market trade is rife, bots are obviously frowned upon. In D3, where there’s a minimum price for gold — where Blizzard always gets at least 15% of every transaction — bots don’t matter. They can’t ruin the economy — they just stand to make Blizzard more money. The best bit, with regard to bots and gold farmers, is that they’ve known from the start that the RMAH would come — and so they’ve saved up billions of gold and awesome magic items for one truly epic payday.

Blizzard even gets its pound of flesh from quitters: If you quit, of course you’re going to sell all of your items on the RMAH. Furthermore, Blizzard has said that, in the future, you’ll be able to sell entire characters on the RMAH.

…Finally, just to tip you over the edge, think about this: What if Blizzard itself started selling gold and items on the RMAH? The FAQ states that “at this time” Blizzard doesn’t do this — but in the future, who knows? The Diablo 3 auction house is anonymous — the seller is never listed — and so Blizzard could easily sell gold and items without anyone noticing. What if Blizzard decided to sell special items on the RMAH? Uber-fans of games and franchises will pay almost anything for unique or exclusive items.

Ironically, the Auction House remains one of the more popular features of the game, with lots of disenchanted players spending more time in the AH than in gameplay. This despite the fact that (IMHO) the AH has done more than anything to ruin the gameplay experience for thousands of fans who played too much, too fast, too easily, thanks to too good of equipment (courtesy of the GAH) and have thus already grown bored with the game.

Allods Online prepares players for patch 3.0.2 with a new mini-site

May 15th, 2012

Allods Online’s mascots are back for another humorous video, as Troll and Crab try their hands (claws) at making potions. It doesn’t quite go as expected, but it’s hard to blame Crab for what happens (he’s just an earnest little guy). This is all to promote the game’s newest update, patch 3.0.2, which promises to be a savory concoction for players to quaff. Over the weekend, gPotato opened up a new mini-site to promote the update and has since posted several new articles highlighting the changes.

Some of patch 3.0.2′s big selling points include a revamp of the Alchemy profession, the ability for pets to do the looting, a neat-sounding mentor system, a new skirmish called The Deserted Farm, a free-for-all treasure hunting space, a new raid boss, and better questing.

Peek into the future of Star Wars: The Old Republic’s Legacy system

Yesterday, the Star Wars: The Old Republic guild summit gave players a good idea of what to expect from patch 1.2. But just hearing about things like the new Legacy features and upcoming Operations isn’t enough for everyone, which is no doubt part of the reason the development team has put together a trailer for all of the new features. And while the new Operation, Flashpoint, and Warzone might be the most immediately interesting, there’s a lot more on display in the trailer.

In fact, the trailer shows off more of the cross-race options for new characters that can be unlocked via the Legacy system as well as the upcoming appearance modification and UI customization that the patch will add. There’s also a preview of new minipets, the promise of new daily missions on Corellia, and several other tweaks to improve the game. But why take our word for it when you can jump on down and watch the video for yourself?

GamersFirst is in the minds of gamers for its successful relaunch of APB: Reloaded, which went from a lightning-fast shutdown to a successful free-to-play title. The company is also developing new games based on original IPs for future release. But there’s some rumbling going on behind the scenes at the company, as the company’s parent corporation, K2 Network, saw the resignation of its CEO, Joshua Hong. Bjorn Book-Larsson, former COO and CTO, has been promoted to the CEO position, with Hong’s future uncertain.

The official statements claim that the transition of power was amicable and pre-arranged, but it also comes on the heels of worldwide layoffs from K2 and rumors of a power struggle behind the scenes. Rahul Sandil, the company’s public relations chief, claimed that there was no truth to these rumors and that the plan was to move forward from simple localizations of titles developed in foreign markets. Sandil went on to confirm that APB: Reloaded continues to be a large-scale success for the company and that further development will be centered around work that Book-Larsson had already seen during his time as CTO and COO.

Online gaming linked with marital dissatisfaction

Good news, gamers! You can now blame another dysfunction (if you have it, and I’m sure you don’t) on the games you play! It’s not enough that those nasty ol’ video games are making you violent and antisocial — a new survey put out by Brigham Young University is linking online gaming with a decrease in marital satisfaction.

The survey states that “gaming widows,” whose spouses neglect them to focus on gaming, are dissatisfied with the states of their marriage. How that differs from corporate widows, football widows, or any other neglected spouse without a catchy title isn’t really specified. Another conclusion pointed out by the survey is that when spouses play together, the marriage tends to be in pretty good shape. Who’d have ever thought that spending time bonding over a shared interest would be healthy for a relationship?

While we’re all in agreement that your level 80 Paladin probably doesn’t deserve as much of your love and affection as your spouse, if you hadn’t figured that out on your own, gaming probably isn’t the root of your problems. Just a thought.

EVE Online’s time dilation keeping game in sync

Leave it to one of the most popular MMO studios to figure out how to control time — and do so successfully. Through technical wizardry, CCP did just that when it released a time dilation feature into EVE Online last month to reduce lag during massive space battles.

So far, it’s working great, according to CCP Veritas. In a new blog post, he shows off graphs and recounts recent events that show how “TiDi” (as he calls it) is successfully slowing down in-game time to keep player commands and on-screen action in sync.

“In all cases, it has kicked in appropriately when the server node has become overloaded, keeping things running responsively and sanely,” he writes. “In both huge fights [shown on the graphs], the module response time was kept under one second for the vast majority of the action, which is a tremendously large improvement over the 20, 40, 600 seconds we’d sometimes see in fights of this scale.”

EVE Online has also made a few quality of life improvements to EVE Gate, including a better login system, a navigation menu tied in with the rest of the site, and a way to quickly zip to dev posts on the forums.

EVE Online website revamp detailed in new video devblog

February 1st, 2012

EVE Online has undergone countless changes and iterations since its first release in 2003, with major graphics overhauls and new gameplay systems arriving every year. In contrast, the official EVE website hasn’t changed much over the years. With background information, screenshots, video, forums and knowledgebase articles, the EVE website now juggles content designed for prospective players and existing community members alike. CCP aims to change all that with a complete overhaul that will split community tools like the forums, knowledgebase, and account management from marketing designed to attract players.

In a new video devblog, web-developer CCP Alice shows off some of the features of EVE’s brand new website. Built using HTML 5, the new page will feature a full built-in renderer able to show prospective players the EVE Online universe map and interactive renderings of every ship in the game. “Now that we have a better eveonline.com, the focus after this one is to focus on the community,” says CCP Alice, hinting that new community tools will soon be on the way. In a follow-up devblog today, Community Manager CCP Guard confirmed that players will soon be able to start their own corporation forums hosted on CCP’s servers. Check out the full video after the cut.

Pocket Legends launches the Mount Fang expansion

It’s time for another update for one of the first MMOs on the go, Pocket Legends. Mount Fang, the latest expansion, brings with it an increase in the level cap to 66 as well as a reduction in the experience curve across the board. If you’re at the level cap, you can shoot for the next tier, but the reduction in the curve ensures that players at any level can benefit from the update.

There’s more to the update than just leveling, however; players will be given access to a new free campaign, Mount Fang, that starts at level 59 and provides new monsters, quests, and rewards. And of course, there are new vanity items in the cash shop as well as a special set of cosmetic armor for players who hit 66 before the next cap adjustment. If you’ve been enjoying the game on your mobile device of choice, download the expansion and get into the mix.

38 Studios opens a website portal to Project Copernicus’ world

While 38 Studios’ top-secret Project Copernicus MMO lacks a proper title or most of its details, at least we can now visit the world that it and its single-player RPG brother, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, inhabits.

The studio launched a pair of websites devoted to the game world and its first game today. Over on Amalur, 38 Studios has unleashed its loremasters to share with you the stories, features, histories, and settings of this fantasy landscape. And while Reckoning is just a prequel to the eventual MMO, its website contains quite a few lore snippets as well as a world map to pour over while you’re planning your future conquests.

As part of the twin projects, R.A. Salvatore has created over 10,000 years of fictional history for the world of Amalur, stretching from The Deep Gloam to the Age of Heroes. Reckoning takes place during the Age of Arcana, with Copernicus happening some time thereafter.

Alt1 Games shutting down Troy Online

After only three months of commercial operation, Troy Online is going to be discontinuing operations as of November 30th. According to the official notice, within the short span of time that the game has been available, Alt1 Games has noticed a level of bugs and errors that the developers considered unacceptable, leading to the decision to shut down service at the end of the month and re-launch the game at a later date.

The obvious question for players, of course, becomes “what about the stuff that I bought out of the cash shop?” If you still have remaining coins for the in-game store or unused cash shop items in your character’s inventory, you are eligible for a refund by contacting the customer support center by November 22nd, with refunds being credited between the 23rd and the 24th. It’s a sad whimper for the game’s operation to end on, but at least players won’t be left out in the cold with any unused money.

The Game Archaeologist and the Classic MMOs in October

Today we’re going to start a new feature of this column in which we devote a week to catching up with previous Game Archaeologist spotlights and see what’s going on in these classic MMOs. I figured that it was a shame to give these titles a big burst of publicity and then dump them like yesterday’s news. After all, if these games’ communities are still alive and kicking, and if the developers are churning out new content, then it’s worth a monthly mention, don’t you think?

I won’t just be regurgitating news here; I’ll also peek at the various official forums to see what the community is talking about and highlight discussions and debates that are of interest. Not every classic MMO will be featured every month in this space, as I’ll try to rotate around to make sure they all get their fair share of mentions.

October was an interesting month for classic MMOs in that several of them produced extremely newsworthy stories that got front-page mention on Massively. On a special note, I won’t be covering Asheron’s Call today as we’re prepping a special anniversary tribute for later this month!

The clock is running down for Star Wars Galaxies’ existence, but the players certainly have a lot to see and do in the final weeks before the December 15th sunset. The big focus is on the finale of the Galactic Civil War, which will see either the Rebels or Imperials emerge victorious when all is said and done. It may just be for pride at this point, but players are certainly taking it seriously.

SOE is trying hard to retain customer loyalty for soon-to-be-homeless SWG vets and has finally — albeit a little late — instituted a free membership program that grants full access to five other SOE MMOs through December 31st. That’s plenty of time to give these other titles a try and see if they’re worthy of immigration.

On the forums, SWG players are struggling to figure out the best way to wrap up their experiences in the game. Some have contributed to a truly mighty favorite screenshot thread while others are trying to assemble a final day celebration. One player named MythosHero has recorded and edited a wonderful tribute video titled The World We Wrote: A Cinematic Tribute to Star Wars Galaxies. You can (and should!) watch the full five-minute movie below, even if you’ve never played SWG:

Bethesda appeal denied for Fallout Online, work continues by Interplay

Are you enjoying the game of Fallout Online? No, not the actual online game in which you adventure in a shattered wasteland, but the constant back-and-forth between Interplay and Bethesda over which company is allowed to work on the development. The game has been tied up in court for roughly forever, with Bethesda trying to block Interplay’s further development via legal tactics, and while the first injunction was denied, the studio appealed to have the development halted.

It turns out that the courts remained firmly on Interplay’s side, however, as the appeal has been denied and Interplay is in the clear to continue developing the game. Unfortunately, the game will still require express permission from Bethesda to launch, meaning that there’s still no end in sight to the legal fighting and name-calling by both companies. For the time being, all that fans of the franchise can do is wait and see… assuming that Interplay remains financially able to develop the game after all.

Analyzing the Raid Finder Loot Rules in World of Warcraft

October 18th, 2011

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

Loot rules are a funny thing when it comes to World of Warcraft because there is never a “right” or “wrong” approach to them. It’s all subjective. For instance, some players see “need before greed” as the ultimate most pure form of loot distribution, while others use advanced calculus and astronomy in order to determine who can take the coveted piece of loot. Blizzard has, of course, stepped in once more to give everyone a bit of a changeup on the loot rules.

This is likely being implemented as a change for the Looking for Raid system, and it could trickle down into LFG (which would make the most common sense and I’m going to assume that it will) so it’s best to get acquainted with it now before your raid group falls apart from some crazy snafu.
