EVE Online has undergone countless changes and iterations since its first release in 2003, with major graphics overhauls and new gameplay systems arriving every year. In contrast, the official EVE website hasn’t changed much over the years. With background information, screenshots, video, forums and knowledgebase articles, the EVE website now juggles content designed for prospective players and existing community members alike. CCP aims to change all that with a complete overhaul that will split community tools like the forums, knowledgebase, and account management from marketing designed to attract players.

In a new video devblog, web-developer CCP Alice shows off some of the features of EVE’s brand new website. Built using HTML 5, the new page will feature a full built-in renderer able to show prospective players the EVE Online universe map and interactive renderings of every ship in the game. “Now that we have a better eveonline.com, the focus after this one is to focus on the community,” says CCP Alice, hinting that new community tools will soon be on the way. In a follow-up devblog today, Community Manager CCP Guard confirmed that players will soon be able to start their own corporation forums hosted on CCP’s servers. Check out the full video after the cut.

It’s time for another update for one of the first MMOs on the go, Pocket Legends. Mount Fang, the latest expansion, brings with it an increase in the level cap to 66 as well as a reduction in the experience curve across the board. If you’re at the level cap, you can shoot for the next tier, but the reduction in the curve ensures that players at any level can benefit from the update.

There’s more to the update than just leveling, however; players will be given access to a new free campaign, Mount Fang, that starts at level 59 and provides new monsters, quests, and rewards. And of course, there are new vanity items in the cash shop as well as a special set of cosmetic armor for players who hit 66 before the next cap adjustment. If you’ve been enjoying the game on your mobile device of choice, download the expansion and get into the mix.

But wait, there’s more! Chocolate Castle, Zen Puzzle Garden and Jasper’s Journeys have also been tossed in. And, as with previous Humble bundles, if you’ve already paid, you can download Gish and the others for free.

While 38 Studios’ top-secret Project Copernicus MMO lacks a proper title or most of its details, at least we can now visit the world that it and its single-player RPG brother, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, inhabits.

The studio launched a pair of websites devoted to the game world and its first game today. Over on Amalur, 38 Studios has unleashed its loremasters to share with you the stories, features, histories, and settings of this fantasy landscape. And while Reckoning is just a prequel to the eventual MMO, its website contains quite a few lore snippets as well as a world map to pour over while you’re planning your future conquests.

As part of the twin projects, R.A. Salvatore has created over 10,000 years of fictional history for the world of Amalur, stretching from The Deep Gloam to the Age of Heroes. Reckoning takes place during the Age of Arcana, with Copernicus happening some time thereafter.

After only three months of commercial operation, Troy Online is going to be discontinuing operations as of November 30th. According to the official notice, within the short span of time that the game has been available, Alt1 Games has noticed a level of bugs and errors that the developers considered unacceptable, leading to the decision to shut down service at the end of the month and re-launch the game at a later date.

The obvious question for players, of course, becomes “what about the stuff that I bought out of the cash shop?” If you still have remaining coins for the in-game store or unused cash shop items in your character’s inventory, you are eligible for a refund by contacting the customer support center by November 22nd, with refunds being credited between the 23rd and the 24th. It’s a sad whimper for the game’s operation to end on, but at least players won’t be left out in the cold with any unused money.

Today we’re going to start a new feature of this column in which we devote a week to catching up with previous Game Archaeologist spotlights and see what’s going on in these classic MMOs. I figured that it was a shame to give these titles a big burst of publicity and then dump them like yesterday’s news. After all, if these games’ communities are still alive and kicking, and if the developers are churning out new content, then it’s worth a monthly mention, don’t you think?

I won’t just be regurgitating news here; I’ll also peek at the various official forums to see what the community is talking about and highlight discussions and debates that are of interest. Not every classic MMO will be featured every month in this space, as I’ll try to rotate around to make sure they all get their fair share of mentions.

October was an interesting month for classic MMOs in that several of them produced extremely newsworthy stories that got front-page mention on Massively. On a special note, I won’t be covering Asheron’s Call today as we’re prepping a special anniversary tribute for later this month!

The clock is running down for Star Wars Galaxies’ existence, but the players certainly have a lot to see and do in the final weeks before the December 15th sunset. The big focus is on the finale of the Galactic Civil War, which will see either the Rebels or Imperials emerge victorious when all is said and done. It may just be for pride at this point, but players are certainly taking it seriously.

SOE is trying hard to retain customer loyalty for soon-to-be-homeless SWG vets and has finally — albeit a little late — instituted a free membership program that grants full access to five other SOE MMOs through December 31st. That’s plenty of time to give these other titles a try and see if they’re worthy of immigration.

On the forums, SWG players are struggling to figure out the best way to wrap up their experiences in the game. Some have contributed to a truly mighty favorite screenshot thread while others are trying to assemble a final day celebration. One player named MythosHero has recorded and edited a wonderful tribute video titled The World We Wrote: A Cinematic Tribute to Star Wars Galaxies. You can (and should!) watch the full five-minute movie below, even if you’ve never played SWG:

Are you enjoying the game of Fallout Online? No, not the actual online game in which you adventure in a shattered wasteland, but the constant back-and-forth between Interplay and Bethesda over which company is allowed to work on the development. The game has been tied up in court for roughly forever, with Bethesda trying to block Interplay’s further development via legal tactics, and while the first injunction was denied, the studio appealed to have the development halted.

It turns out that the courts remained firmly on Interplay’s side, however, as the appeal has been denied and Interplay is in the clear to continue developing the game. Unfortunately, the game will still require express permission from Bethesda to launch, meaning that there’s still no end in sight to the legal fighting and name-calling by both companies. For the time being, all that fans of the franchise can do is wait and see… assuming that Interplay remains financially able to develop the game after all.

Loot rules are a funny thing when it comes to World of Warcraft because there is never a “right” or “wrong” approach to them. It’s all subjective. For instance, some players see “need before greed” as the ultimate most pure form of loot distribution, while others use advanced calculus and astronomy in order to determine who can take the coveted piece of loot. Blizzard has, of course, stepped in once more to give everyone a bit of a changeup on the loot rules.

This is likely being implemented as a change for the Looking for Raid system, and it could trickle down into LFG (which would make the most common sense and I’m going to assume that it will) so it’s best to get acquainted with it now before your raid group falls apart from some crazy snafu.

The Basics of the Raid Finder Loot Rules
Let’s look at the new rules: it’s very simple and to the point. In one of the 4.3 raids you will walk in, kill a boss, and an item drops. Need before greed takes first precedence. So if someone needs and someone greeds, those who need will get first dibs. Then it moves into what role the item is for. Let’s say a tanking shield drops and a DPS rolls on it along with two tanks. The DPS will be knocked out of the rankings because the two tanks will get a 100 added to their roll. Of course, should no tanks “need” the item then everyone could roll equally for it.

Do note that this will not look at someone’s specialization. So if a DPS is in a Tank spec (because we all know pubbies are not all there, which is why we need to use PlayerScore to filter them out) then they will still be counted as DPS. There are also other issues, naturally, from using this system. It doesn’t look at more detailed things such as is this item an upgrade, sidegrade, downgrade, or just to be used on those lazy afternoons when you’re having your undergarments washed. Of course, let’s say a Feral DPS and Boomkin DPS roll on an AGI item or INT item, one can’t use it but they will both get the bonus.

There are a few good things to say though, items can be flagged for multiple roles, so if you’re a Boomkin, Shadow Priest, or Elemental Shaman then worry now – I’m sure some of that spirit gear will be DPS/healer.

Blizzard as Big Brother
It’s tough to have someone tell you what gear is and is not yours. Adding in complication to the Need before Greed system is necessary for advancement but also creates unneeded strain on the system. If this applies to normal or even lower level heroics then you’re going to land in a situation where we can’t create new healers or tanks because it’s impossible to queue as a healer or tank without getting the gear beforehand. This is lessened since Cataclysm has aged to the point that you can get really nice epics from daily quests, but it’s still something to look into.

On the flipside, and as a counter argument, I’ll be glad that a tank doesn’t take my much needed healer item. It’s annoying, pompous, and leads towards way too much drama. How many times has your group broken up because someone rolled need on an item that the actual role needed and was denied it? Imagine being with a larger group in a random raid scenario?

There will be complications with this system, but advancements are necessary for us to continue to move forward and avoid stagnation. I fully support these new changes and look forward to seeing them in action, versus just sitting around on my La-Z-Boy with my smoking jacket on debating the merits of loot systems until it’s time for tea.

As always, you can always form your own groups, using a tool like PlayerScore to filter out the drama mongering keyboard face rollers, and go through instances with your own loot rules (including my favorite: duel for it) so, this only applies to random raids (and probably dungeons at some point).

With that folks, leave your thoughts, comments, and random trivia in the comments section below.

“Peace between Republic and Empire is crumbling. Every world, signs of war.”

Thus begins a two-minute journey through Star Wars: The Old Republic’s setting, as the narrator takes us to a half-dozen worlds where conflict is brewing, people are being stabbed in the back, Bantha raiders are waving sticks above their heads, and players’ mouths are salivating.

This new trailer, Signs of War, is being shown this weekend at the New York Comic Con. While it might not be packed with new information, it’s certainly a pulse-pounding buildup to this December’s launch. From Jedi to Agents, every class gets its little moment to shine in it, packaged between explosions and large-scale conflict.

You can watch the full trailer after the jump!

The phrase “serious business” is often used to poke fun at gamers who take their MMORPGs, well… too seriously. World of Tanks players are having the last laugh, though, as their game is now officially an e-sport with the potential to repay their time investment with a bit of real-world cash.

Wargaming.net’s latest press release has the details, which include the fact that WoT is now a part of the Electronic Sports League Major Series — also known as the largest gaming league in Europe. ESL boasts over 3 million registered members and upwards of 740,000 registered teams, making it a good fit for the hardcore World of Tanks community which holds the single-server player concurrency world record.

Head on over to the ESL World of Tanks portal to sign up for the first official event.
