How to Get the Sandstone Drake Mount?

February 14th, 2011

There are several new flying mounts in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. They look like traditional drakes but seem to have stone or crystals grafted onto them. One of these mounts is crafted by an Alchemy recipe obtained from doing Archeology – the new secondary skill also introducted in Cataclysm.

The Sandstone Drake, summoned with the Vial of the Sands, isn’t just a mount – its also a vehicle. Acting like a spell, it transforms the user into a Drake with a green hue, who can then be ridden by one party member. Read more…

FFXIV Launch 2.0 – Evaluations and Suggestions

January 17th, 2011

Day in and day out, we’re faced with reviews and opinions on FFXIV. The majority of these have been negative, some to a lesser extent, and a rare few that attempt to praise the game. So who is right? Well, it’s hard to say, of course, but I’m hoping to share some of my experience with the game, and to discuss certain aspects in a pseudo-objective tone.

Before I begin, I’ll share a few details about myself that might put this review into perspective. I began playing the game in mid-December, with an Elezen female. After reaching rank 18 on ARC as my highest, with a number of other jobs above 10 and approaching 15-16, I decided that I would rather return to my beta look (Miqo’te). Read more…

Final Fantasy XIV open beta kicks off [Updated]

September 3rd, 2010

Players anticipating Final Fantasy XIV got to play an exciting new game starting last night, which is currently being dubbed “hoping that the server connection doesn’t reset while applying for open beta.” The servers have been wheezing under the load of people trying to log in, but luckily, some players have managed to get in and obtain crucial information. FFXIVCore has put together a compilation of the more interesting tidbits, including the now-known server names and the notes for the latest and greatest patch.

While the closed beta servers were named for the bosses of the Final Fantasy series, the open beta servers (and the assumed launch servers) are named for famous cities from the games. This beta also had changed the previously homogenized stats of the races to differentiate racial choices — but with the differences only being a few points in any direction, there’s no huge impediment to playing any class as any race. Take a look at the full patch notes for a rundown of changes if you were in the prior beta, and keep trying if you find your registration attempts getting disconnected. Apparently there’s no shortage of eager Final Fantasy XIV fans.

Warhammer Online’s RvR pack announced

August 20th, 2010

Mention “Skaven” to your average Warhammer Online player, and you’ll be treated to an almost instant recitation of all the reasons why the race ought to be playable. It appears that players might be due to get that wish — as well as a few more wishes — with the announcement of the RvR pack for the game. Although we only have the broadest strokes of an outline for the pack, it promises to expand the game’s core focus of PvP with an increase in the renown ranks to 100.

Executive Producer Carrie Gouskos has confirmed the involvement of the Skaven, although she’s stated that they’ll not be playable directly from level 1. How the integration will take place is unclear, as are most of the fine details, although the pack will clearly be a big change for the game’s overall structure. The pack is also meant to move away from the “huge expansion” model that’s common in the MMO genre, with the company presumably moving to several smaller expansions on a quicker timetable. It’s good news for Warhammer Online players to see what’s coming around the bend, especially if players can run about sowing chaos as ravenous rat-men.

Early thoughts on professions in Cataclysm

August 12th, 2010

The Cataclysm beta continues, and the crafting dudes abide. Betas can be tough when you’re doing professions analysis. A lot of the itemization and various power coefficients aren’t finished, so none of the gear created by crafting feels “permanent.” And I don’t believe any drop rate that isn’t firmly sourced from live servers. In the words of many before me, “You can’t take anything for granted yet.” Makes it tough to know what you’re looking at.

Of course, that being said, the beta is providing a lot of tantalizing hints about what professions will be like in the expansion. There have been enormous efforts to reconcile the relative power levels of each profession, and I think the developers have made huge strides in that regard.

You wanna play a priest, levels 1-40

July 19th, 2010

With all the preliminary work laid out, this week we’ll be finally be getting started on the actual leveling aspect of my multi-part leveling guide. This week we’ll be covering abilities, rotations, talent builds, and gear upgrades for the first 40 levels of the priest class. So if you dream of smiting your enemies with divine fire, and giving yourself a small tan in the process, hit the jump!

Before I get started, I want to provide a few disclaimers that should be considered while using this guide. This is not a speed leveling guide. It will not tell you what quests to do, what zones to go to, nor will it attempt to calculate the most effective way to level as a priest. Frankly, unless you’re being power leveled by a higher level character, I don’t believe that one method of leveling is superior to another. My own personal experience tells me that, in terms of experience per hour, using the random dungeon finder is abysmal in comparison to questing. Yet I have had many people tell me their experience is the opposite, and they find RDF faster than questing. Who’s right? It doesn’t matter. Whatever holds your attention is what you should do. This guide will try to accommodate that.

Cataclysm Beta: New blacksmithing items revealed

July 1st, 2010

Well, even if you’re a raiding player clearing heroic mode ICC 25 there will be some really tempting items for you as you level from 80 to 85 in Cataclysm. Items like this Obsidian Executioner, usable at level 81, will certainly be of interest to your 2h melee DPS, while the Decapitator’s Razor will draw attention from enhancement shamans, rogues, and perhaps even death knights and fury warriors with the new Single-Minded Fury talent.

The 25 most entertaining achievements, part 1

June 25th, 2010

Back in May, we kicked around the idea of reversing gears after our series on “The 25 most evil achievements,” and today I’d like to start the first in our series on … well, I had trouble naming it. “Most fun achievements” is a bit awkward. “Best achievements?” Probably too vague, especially because we could all spend hours arguing over what constitutes a truly good achievement. “Least evil?” That doesn’t do much to inspire readers. Finally I settled on “most entertaining achievements,” and I hope that’s a decent gloss on the series that will follow.

Today we’ll examine the first five, with more to follow next week. In a nutshell, I think these are the achievements that every WoW players should do, if only because they showcase some of Blizzard’s best, most engaging or funniest work.

Patch 3.3.5: Servers coming online

June 24th, 2010

It looks like the long wait may be over, as US servers appear to be slowly coming back online from a lengthy extended maintenance. For now the list of servers up is small, and there’s been no official confirmation from Blizzard as to whether or not the downtime is over — however most servers that are up and live are experiencing queues in the thousands and are locked from further character creation at this time. We’ll update this post when the servers are officially back up and running — until then, why not check out the Tuesday Morning Post for reading material you may have missed?

More double XP on tap for Aion

June 11th, 2010

Remember how NCsoft said prior to the 1.9 patch that there wouldn’t be any more of their patented Aion double XP weekends for awhile? Well forget all that as this Friday, June 11th, marks the beginning of yet another scrumptious smorgasbord of sweet, sweet experience for your level-hungry Daevas.

We’re not sure what changed their minds (and frankly we don’t care as long as the spice keeps flowing), but one thing we are sure of is that the event has caused us to rethink our weekend gaming plans. When combined with the hefty repeatable quest XP rewards littering the landscape around Heiron post-patch, we’d be remiss for not scarfing up as much as humanly possible. We might even, gasp, approach max level.

Translated interviews offer more insight into Final Fantasy XIV’s world and playstyle

June 4th, 2010

We’re just coming off of a holiday weekend here in the US, and Japan had their own recent stretch of holidays, so news on Final Fantasy XIV has been a little bit slower of late. But a recent group of interviews in the June 11th issue of Dengeki have been translated thanks to the team over at FFXIVCore, and they cover topics from materials of armor to the game’s not-always-praised battle system. The first part of the interview talks testing and systems with Hiromichi Tanaka and Nobuai Komoto, while the second part discusses visuals and worldbuilding with planner Kenichi Iwao.

We confirm that the next phase of testing is set to begin soon, as well as dropping the news that the next test will likely feature an almost totally redesigned battle system. It’s even hinted that players were never meant to experience the current system, that it was there almost as a placeholder. By contrast, Iwao discusses the lore and visual aspects of the game, talking about how items will be made from different materials, and how players who want to play a male Mito’qe shouldn’t give up hope just yet. All Final Fantasy XIV fans are encouraged to read both interviews, since there’s a lot of information available in both — just the thing for the post-holiday doldrums.
