Ironclad announced Sins of a Dark Age today, its follow-up to the epic space armada strategy game, Sins of a Solar Empire. The new game will be a free-to-play project, blending classic real-time strategy with the MOBA genre (League of Legends, DOTA 2).

Players work in teams, which consist of one commander and up to four heroes, who can face off against other players or AI. The commander is responsible for building the base, directing units and positioning defenses. The commander can also call upon “Realm Powers” to turn the tide of battle. Heroes have their own set of powers, but are tasked with assisting the commander’s units and capturing resources.

More details should shake out at the Game Developers Conference in two weeks. The game will begin its beta this summer.

Final Fantasy XIV adds direct subscription options

As Final Fantasy XIV forges ahead with its revived subscription model, Square-Enix is showing signs that it is listening to its customer base in regards to options. The company announced that players can now directly subscribe to the game with a credit or debit card through the account system.

Previously, Final Fantasy XIV utilized a convoluted system that required players to purchase an intermediary currency called Crysta, which was then spent on monthly subscription options. Not only did players find this complex and unnecessary, but there were issues with buying more Crysta than one actually needed.

According to the company, the ability to directly subscribe via credit card was “by far the most popular request received from the community.” FFXIV began charging for subscriptions earlier this month after more than a year of free service.

SWTOR pits the Trooper against the Inquisitor

The second of the four-part Choose Your Side video series has been released over at Star Wars: The Old Republic, and this time it creates a hypothetical showdown between the Republic’s Trooper and the Empire’s Inquisitor. In it, four BioWare devs jaw about who would win in a fight and what each of these classes has going for it. These videos are proving to be a great way to get a better feel for classes’ strengths and weaknesses, particularly in a PvP setting.

On one hand, the Trooper is said to have an advantage in terms of health, armor and range, with plenty of tricks to keep the Inquisitor at bay and, er, dead. On the other hand, the Inquisitor’s Force powers and double-bladed lightsaber may make for a completely unfair fight against the Force-less Trooper.

The devs reveal a few tidbits about the two classes’ philosophy while they’re calmly laying out the smack talk. The Trooper comes off as a “shoot first and ask questions later” type of character, while the Inquisitor is portrayed as a mastermind pulling the strings from behind the stage.

Will World of Warcraft’s newest expansion be all that the casual player has ever dreamed of?

Love it or hate it Mists of Pandaria is the next World of Warcraft expansion and considering the depth of information Blizzard managed to provide at this years BlizzCon, work on the expansion is in full swing and has been for awhile. So we can all expect sometime in the near (or not so near) future that adorable Kung Fu Pandas will be invading our WoW games along with a ton of other changes aimed at breathing new life into the game. However, unlike many other players I know, I’m not nerd raging at the new expansion and the changes it will bring, but I’m also not planning on sending them any Edible Arrangements anytime soon either.

My plan is to simply sit and wait and make my final determination when the expansion is finally released, no matter how hard that might be. But one group of players at least should be extra excited for this newest chapter in Azeroth; the casual player. If your scratching your head at this point and wondering what in the world I‘m talking about, you apparently weren’t paying close attention to the information provided at BlizzCon.

With the details given by Blizzard so far, Mists of Pandaria has the potential to shape up to be the ultimate casual players paradise. And while its easy for those not so casual players to get upset at the direction the game is taking who can really blame Blizzard for trying to appeal to their biggest fan base as subscriptions are dwindling? Still unsure of what I’m talking about? Here are some of the things the casual player has to look forward to in Mists of Pandaria:

Simplified Talent Trees

With the new talents system players will no longer be forced to picked talents simply because they are the “norm”.If things go as planned and the Talents 2.0 system pans out as Blizzard intends it should make the casual player very happy. No longer will a player be forced to agonize over a talent, spend hours running numbers to decide which talent is best, or be forced to choose a talent simply because some Joe Smoe with a little two much time on their hands decided that a certain talent was better. Instead the casual player (and all players for that matter) will find that talent choices will be made based on their personal preferences and since there should technically be no wrong answer never again will a player be laughed out of a raid or group based on their talent choices.

Valor Points for Questing
That’s right ladies and gentlemen, Valor Points aren’t just for raiders anymore. According to information given at BlizzCon, high level quests will now award players Valor Points. Which is to say the least an excellent development for the casual player who has no time to raid but still wishes they could get some awesome gear. With that being said Blizzard has stated that Valor Points will be earned much slower thorugh this method than if you earned them while raiding. So you won’t be getting uber gear overnight while questing, but at long last the casual player will have a chance to earn gear that they would have never been able to obtain in expansions past.

Are you the sort of person who absolutely will not rest until you’ve achieved every goal a game has set before you? Are you a Star Wars: The Old Republic fan? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then boy are you in luck.

Everyone’s favorite time-wasters have been confirmed for The Old Republic’s launch. That’s right, we’re talking about achievements. It’s important to note, however, that these aren’t the esoteric, wacky achievements that reward you for dancing on a mailbox with rubber cow udders strapped to your head. The “level one” achievement system will primarily focus on feats of heroism, such as taking down a big boss and other things of that nature. EVE ISK,eve Item

Significant change is afoot in EVE Online, and no, we’re not just talking about the latest clothing item on the Noble Exchange or additional captain’s quarters built on top of Incarna’s foundation. A brief blog post on the official website indicates that CCP has taken the firestorm of criticism from long-time players over the last several months to heart.
(If you want to buy EVE ISK or EVE Items, please click here)
While it’s not quite a mea culpa, CCP Zulu does say that the company has been engaging in an “extensive and intense introspection and revitalization. The result of this is a refocusing and reprioritization on a scale unheard of within our company.”

How extensive (and how intense)? That remains to be seen, of course, but the post points to the recent ship-spinning update and also goes a step further. “We are listening to you, we have heard you, and plans are already in motion,” Zulu writes.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: About Beastman Strongholds

September 13th, 2011

Beastman strongholds – these enemy fortifications that will soon rise across the Eorzean landscape. Teeming with foes and home to copious treasure chests, strongholds are formed of multiple sections, each of which is guarded by a contingent of defenders.

Adventurers must cut their way through line after line of enemy resistance, breaching one gate after the next, before finally reaching the heart of the compound. Be forewarned: fearsome adversaries lie in wait within, ever ready to put a swift end to those trespassers who enter unprepared.

A stronghold erected by the Amalj’aa, its name meaning “like a rock” in their native tongue. Its location was said to be chosen by thaumaturges who, through ancient rituals, divined the position to be auspicious for waging war. Beginning life as a humble frontier outpost, over time Zahar’ak grew to become the foremost Amalj’aa base in all of Thanalan, boasting an intimidating array of siege engines and troop conveyances as well as a facility for breeding war drakes. Recent moons have seen a sharp rise in activity at Zahar’ak, which has sparked disquieting rumors among Ul’dahns of a full-scale assault on the sultanate. Read more…

Cataclysm: Patch 4.1 Will not Contain Firelands Raid

March 10th, 2011

According to a statement from Blizzard on Eurogamer, patch 4.1 will not contain Firelands and the associated raid content. Lead producer J. Allen Brack cited the fact that players hadn’t sufficiently progressed through the current tier of raid content as the reason for this decision. Eurogamer provides the quote: “We feel like the player base isn’t really ready for the next raid yet,” [Brack] said. “And that led to some changes where Firelands is now actually going to be in 4.2.”

This is a step toward much smaller (and faster) content patches, much as we had back in vanilla WoW. Blizzard could release a small set of features far more rapidly than the current “monolithic” patches. Firelands and its associated raid content will now be included in patch 4.2. Patch 4.1 will entirely focus on the return of Zul’Aman and Zul’Gurub.

You can have up to 100 pets, but can only summon one at a time.
