Pathfinder Online will let players run the kingdom

If you’ve played the Pathfinder tabletop game that Pathfinder Online is based upon, you know that you need to have grouping. After all, the former is all about bands of adventurers exploring the wilds. So it’s fitting that the most recent developer blog is all about the game’s methods of managing groups and playing in different numbers. And this isn’t just a matter of parties or solo play — at the high end, players can be running entire kingdoms as a social unit.

Solo play is meant to be somewhat discouraged, as the blog notes it will be a much more difficult road for a dedicated lone wolf. Parties will be the next step up, holding an undetermined number of players (the working target has about 24 players at the high end). Above those are chartered companies, settlements, and as mentioned, entire new player-run kingdoms. It’s going to produce some interesting dynamics to have player organizations in such abundance, but the developers seem to have some confidence in their initial designs.

THQ CEO Farrell takes 50% pay cut, board of directors also takes cuts

THQ is definitely experiencing some troubles related to its uDraw flop and subsequent layoffs, as evidenced by a new document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
President and CEO Brian Farrell will take a pay cut for the year starting February 15, which reduces his salary from $718,500 to $359,250. His salary will go back up the next year.

His golden parachute has also been tailored a bit more closely, as the payment he’d receive upon departure from the company (either termination “without cause” or resignation with “good reason”) has been cut from three times his highest-ever bonus to just his highest-ever bonus. This is, of course, a small sacrifice compared to the THQ employees whose salaries went from “some” to “none.”

The board of directors is also seeing some cuts: all the other directors have “elected” to receive 50% less cash compensation for a year effective today.

TERA producer’s letter discusses new launcher, development progress

A new holiday edition producer’s letter has been published on the official TERA site, and in it Chris Hager announces that he is currently using the studio’s new launcher to log in to the game. Why is this such a big deal? Hager explains that it “represents a huge leap for us here at En Masse.” He goes on to tell how, over the past year, the team has worked “directly and intimately with the Bluehole development team to… add features that appeal to western gamers.”

But why is the new launcher so important? Because it’s one of the features that the studio built from the ground up. Hager also notes that the game has been in alpha for “about 4 months” and that this week is the last week of alpha testing. He says the team is also looking forward to “the next step in TERA’s journey toward launch next spring.” Here’s to hoping that next step is a beta test. For the full letter, just click on over to the official TERA site.

No job ever goes quite right, no matter how well you plan it. It’s as true in Champions Online as it is anywhere else, and it’s certainly the case in the latest installment of the Whiteout series. After all, the first two issues made it plenty clear that heroes would have their hands full dealing with a downed alien spacecraft, but now things are going from bad to worse for the Steelhead soldiers and the player characters. It seems there’s another player involved in the game who hopes to get in on the wrecked ship…

As with previous installments of the series, the new issue can be played by any character over level 11 and provides special rewards in addition to the usual mission benefits. But if you’ve already played through the mission, you can take a look at the game’s latest Art Corner, which shows off the design of the mechanical antagonists plaguing the newest mission installment (and the subsequent ones as well, most likely).

Zomg, the sky is falling in Azeroth! OK, not really, but World of Warcraft is heading for troubled waters if you believe an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets. According to a report at Gamespot, Atul Bagga downgraded Activision-Blizzard’s stock from “buy” to “neutral” due to the results of a recent online survey that pointed to restlessness among a certain subset of WoW players.

Whether the perceived wanderlust has to do with the game’s age (it turns seven this month) or the deafening hype bandwagon that is gathering steam due to next month’s Star Wars: The Old Republic debut, the numbers indicated a possible loss of between 900,000 and 1.6 million WoW players following TOR’s launch.

World of Warcraft ‘law enforcement guide’ leaked, new commercial released

Have you ever wondered what kind of dirt law enforcement officers would be able to dig up on you if they went to World of Warcraft developer Blizzard for information? Well, wonder no more. An 18-page document has been leaked to the internet thanks to the notorious organization known as AntiSec. The document is two years old, but it outlines what information Blizzard will disclose to law enforcement officers under given stipulations.

And in completely and utterly unrelated news (well, Chuck Norris played a Texas ranger, so I guess there’s some kind of connection), the game has revived its celebrity-laden advertisement series with a new commercial featuring none other than the hero of Barrens chat himself, mister Chuck Norris. As expected, the short clip is full of WoW-modified Chuck Norris jokes because apparently that horse hasn’t been sufficiently flogged yet. To see the ad for yourself, just click on past the cut.

After a half-price XBLA sale sent the excellent indie Limbo to the top of the best-sellers list last week, developer Playdead has announced that it’s sold one million copies of the punishing platformer across three platforms, including PSN and PC. To celebrate that milestone, Playdead is adding an additional platform to the mix: Mac OS.

The Mac release is currently “in the works” and “will be released before the end of the year.” Playdead CEO and co-founder Dino Patti told Joystiq that the Mac release will support SteamPlay, for those of you who’ve already purchased the PC release, and will also be released on the Mac App Store, if that’s more your speed.

The one million milestone also provided Playdead an opportunity to discuss its recent actions to ensure its own independence by “fully acquiring the company from early investors.” Patti says, “We are grateful to everyone who supported us over the past few years, and look forward to forging new partnerships that will both let us reach new heights as a studio and give our director, Arnt Jensen, room to grow creatively.”

Activision has reported its financial results for its fiscal third quarter, ended September 30. The company posted revenues of $754 million, up from $745 million during the same period last year and, more importantly, over $100 million more than its original outlook of $650 million. Net income came in at $148 million, a hefty increase over the $51 million brought in during the same period last year.

The company brought in a record $427 million in revenues from digital channels, accounting for 57 percent of total revenue. The results also make note of Call of Duty: Black Ops, which Activision cites as “the #1 best-selling title in dollars in aggregate across all platforms in the U.S. and Europe for each of the first three quarters of 2011.”

On the back Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and the “stronger than expected consumer response” to the toy-driven Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, the company is raising its revenue outlook for the rest of the year from $4.18 billion to $4.33 billion.

NCsoft releases brief Lineage II F2P trailer

Lineage II is going free-to-play. This isn’t news (or rather, it’s old news at this point, amirite?). We wish we could tell you when the stalwart fantasy title is flipping the free-to-play switch, but unfortunately NCsoft’s big announcement earlier this afternoon made no mention of a release date.

The company did unveil a new trailer that clocks in at just under a minute in length, and it boasts of 400 hours’ worth of gameplay and optional leveling and quality-of-life enhancements from the L2 store. There’s also a new section of the Lineage II website devoted to the “truly free” marketing campaign. Other than that, though, there are still more questions than answers, and your guess is as good as ours when it comes to release dates for the long-awaited Goddess of Destruction content and the business-model switcheroo.

In terms of additional info, ZAM recently interviewed NCsoft bigwigs and wrangled some pricing-related details out of them (most items are in the one dollar range, with some as high as $15 depending on whether or not they’re time-limited). We’ll keep you update with more L2 F2P news bits as they happen.

RuneScape celebrates ‘bot-nuking day’ this Tuesday

Last week we reported that veteran browser MMO RuneScape was losing its ongoing war on bots. Players have begun botting on a massive scale, and it’s become increasingly difficult to distinguish bots from ordinary players. Developer Jagex asked for help from the playerbase in solving the botting problem and announced its intention to continue fighting legal battles against the creators of bot programs.

In a new community update this week, Jagex Chief Executive Officer Mark Gerhard announced the release of a new doomsday weapon in the war on bots. In an upcoming patch on October 25th, Jagex will be “launching our most formidable bot-busting weapon in our history, targeting what we believe to be 98% of the bots seen in game.” This update permanently prevents reflection bots from working and the effects should be immediately visible in-game. To celebrate “bot-nuking day”, Tuesday’s patch brings four days of events and minigame bonuses for regular players.

BlizzCon 2011: Blizzard reveals new talent system

October 24th, 2011

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street got on stage at Blizzcon a few moments ago to unveil an entirely overhauled talent system for Mists of Pandaria, the next World of Warcraft expansion. After four expansions of “cookie cutter” talent builds, Blizzard has broken and reconstructed the entire talent system in order to put the choice for talents directly into the hands of the players. They strove for this in Cataclysm and made some good advances, but ultimately fell short of the goal.

Like the current talent system, players will choose their specialization at level 10. This specialization chooses what abilities you’ll be gaining as you’ll level up, rather than there being baseline talents. There will be a few baseline class abilities, but not nearly as many. According to Ghostcrawler, these spec abilities will be “anything your spec requires.” Spec abilities will be learned out in the field when you level; you only need to visit the trainer to choose a new specialization! In the preview at Blizzcon, the holy specialization for paladins received staple holy abilities, such as Holy Shock, Holy Light, and Beacon of Light. Some specialization abilities will be available to two specs, such as both ret and prot getting Hammer of the Righteous.

The other part of the talent system is that there is now one talent tree for every class. At every 15 levels, you get one talent point, which can be put into one of three talents for that level. You can’t go back and take previous talents. These talents are looking to be abilities, not boring things like passive healing or damage buttons. There are no ranks for these talents. The goal is for there to be no mandatory talents, and that you should choose what you want on a per fight/per content/per choice basis. Retalenting should be as accessible as reglyphing is right now.

So, for example, a paladin will choose holy for her spec, and as she levels up will gain all her core holy abilities. When she hits level 15, she will gain her first talent point, which will be usable on either Speed of Light, Long Arm of the Law, or Pursuit of Justice, which all sound like a speed boost to me. Once she makes this change, she won’t be allowed to choose the other two talents when she gets her next talent point, though she can later choose to retalent if she feels she chose poorly.

The three choices you have to take at any level will all share a same theme in common. In the previous paragraph, you have three talents that will be mobility based. (Warriors also get mobility talents at 15, their choices being Juggernaght, Warbringer, and Double Time.) The idea is that you don’t forego a mobility ability for a dps ability, or a cc for a survivability cooldown.

An important point to note is that even though these abilities have the same names as current talents in the game, they will not have the same effect. They are being redesigned to try to appeal to all three specs in a talent. The point of new talents is to offer a form of utility that you can customize for your playstyle, and not mandatory choices for maximum DPS/HPS/Survivability.

All in all, it’s looking to be a simplified, better, and ultimately more choice-driven take on talenting, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Firelands nerfs

Firelands nerf

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

The great Firelands nerf has arrived! Those of you who have been struggling on progression bosses (normal mode or heroic mode) will no doubt have found that the the barriers have been lowered significantly. Good or bad, that’s entirely up to you and your philosophy. On the one hand, content is now much more accessible. On the other hand, there are many of you who wish you had had more time to take down bosses pre-nerf.

The overall nerf, though, changes several aspects of healing. I find myself not needing to work as hard. That doesn’t necessarily mean not paying attention during a raid. With a lower amount of healing required (due to lower damage on several bosses), it just means fewer spells having to go out. Even though it might feel a little demoralizing to me, it is a little relieving in the sense that content can be seen more easily by players who normally wouldn’t have been able to experience it.

We’ll go over my thoughts on this week, along with some ways to make healing engaging again.

So let me tell you what my experience has been like.

After raiding Tuesday with the crew, the content felt a little disheartening. During Beth’tilac, we had a player miss a Power Word: Barrier and still got through it with barely a scratch. We normally run six healers. But just for kicks, we decided to run five healers on a few of the bosses, and we barely noticed anything. Traditionally, we’ve always cycled through our tools to help us for progression, and it sure as hell isn’t necessary anymore. I had several healers who decided to contribute a little additional DPS. Resto druids weren’t using their Innervates or Tranquility as much. Shaman? It almost seemed like more Lightning Bolts flew out than Chain Heal.

Ragnaros still presented a mild challenge, but that was largely due to the other stuff that players needed to do. There were no major healing targets to go after. The highlight healing points would have been during seed phases when we all had to stack up and heal through the different elementals and adds streaming in. Meteors during the final phase were much more forgiving.

Don’t be alarmed if the net HPS for healers is down. I’ve seen some complaints about healers with normally high HPS who have plummeted on the meters. But that’s a product of any kind of damage nerf. If there is reduced damage going out, then there isn’t going to be any healing going out because it simply isn’t required.

All this stuff about staying out of fires and such just seems so inconsequential now. Not only does it feel infinitely easier to avoid them now, but even if you do get hit by them, you can afford to make the additional mistakes anyway.

The Guide to Warcraft novels, manga, comics, and short stories

September 22nd, 2011

Warcraft novels manga comics short stories

Lore can be tricky; timelines are even trickier. One of the most frequently asked questions we get here at WoW Insider pertains to Warcraft in print. With dozens of novels, manga, comics, and other print material out there, how exactly do you know what order to read it in? Where exactly do you start, if you want to begin at the beginning?

If you’re looking to read everything in order, we’ve got you covered. This guide presents all novels, manga, comics, and short stories that are considered canon in Warcraft lore, in chronological order. For reference purposes, I’ve included the game releases and expansions in the list, so you know which novels cover which games.

The Warcraft: Legends manga series does not appear in this list. There are five volumes in the series, which is an anthology that includes several short stories from all over the Warcraft timeline. Rather than try to pinpoint every short story in each volume, I would simply suggest that you read the Legends series at your leisure, as none of the stories contained in the series are of earth-shattering importance to the current events in Azeroth today.

Some stories appear twice in the timeline. This is because some stories take place partially in flashbacks to earlier events. The timelines of these stories have been noted in their descriptions.
