You know the classic scene in A Christmas Story when Flick gets his tongue frozen to a flagpole? Sure, we all do. But many (including some top film historians) are unaware that Flick performs the stunt on the promise that he’ll be rewarded with entry into the PC Blacklight Retribution closed beta. It’s true!
You remember when the Grinch stole all the gifts from Whoville? New research shows that the only one he was really trying to nab was a Blacklight Retribution beta invite, the rest were just a smokescreen.
Oh, and had he not arrived so late as to not be included in the Christian Bible, you’d know that the fourth king from the East brought unto the baby Jesus … OK, so we’re making this one up, but you get the idea.
Here’s the great news: You PC owners don’t have to steal from a village of diminutive pure-hearts or lick anything to start playing the Blacklight Retribution beta. Just claim your code and redeem it here!

If your jaw hit the floor when you saw Diablo III’s Black Soulstone cinematic, then you’ll definitely want to check out Blizzard’s latest offering. Revealed during the Spike TV video game awards, Diablo III’s official opening cinematic slots another piece of the lore puzzle into place. Set before the Black Soulstone video that saw an overwhelmed Leah confronted by demon lord Asmodan’s impending apocalypse, the opening cinematic introduces a familiar face as the girl’s uncle: Deckard Cain himself.
The video sets the scene for the very beginning of the game and is the first thing players will see on launching the game, so thankfully it can’t really spoil anything. If this video and the Black Soulstone cinematic are any indication of the cinematic quality we can expect throughout Diablo III, then the game has certainly held onto its roots. For news and updates
Skip past the cut to watch the full video, and stay tuned to our weekly Not So Massively column every Monday for news and updates as the game nears release.

Do you loathe leveling the fishing profession? Can’t stand spending hours casting in pools? According to El over at El’s Professions, there was a change put through in patch 4.3 that nobody noticed, one that will make your plight a little easier. In patch 4.3, the number of catches required to level fishing from 1 to 525 has been roughly halved. In addition, the number of catches per skill point above 300 fishing and especially above 450 also seems to have had an adjustment — one point of skill can take between one and 13 casts to gain.
El has put together a new skill-up table over on El’s Extreme Anglin’, but be warned, the pattern may not be fully understood just yet. El is welcoming any observations over on the El’s Extreme Anglin’ forums for fishing enthusiasts.
At any rate, if you’ve been putting off picking up your fishing pole and finishing off those skill points, now would be an excellent time to start fishing!

If you’ve played a first-person shooter, watched a movie, or even turned on the History channel over the past decade, you’re probably very familiar with the iconic image of the United States military forces storming the beaches of Normandy. It’s an appropriate image to keep in your head today, as Battleground Europe (also known as World War II Online) has introduced the American forces to the game’s mixture. The latest patch, 1.34, adds a variety of American vehicles and troops for players to access in the war between the Axis forces and the Allies.
Of course, the addition of the American forces isn’t the only feature of the new patch. Several long-standing bugs have also been addressed, as well as several balance changes aimed at specific troop types. It should be a welcome patch for fans of the game, especially since it will finally be possible to take up the role of another nation in the fight.

While Modern Warfare 3 appears to be continuing the trend of stable, successful Call of Duty multiplayer launches, the much-ballyhooed Call of Duty Elite service hasn’t fared so well. Despite a beta and a solid indication of the platform’s requirements, Elite has been down since launch day. While Activision and Beachhead Studios continue to toil away on the problem, they’ve added another update to the CoD Elite status page letting eager gamers know what’s what.
“And for our premium members who are Founders, know that granting your status and delivering your in-game benefits in MW3 is a priority,” the statement reads, addressing the early paid adopters of Elite. “Also, to ensure that every premium member receives their full money’s worth, we are immediately and automatically extending your membership to Call of Duty Elite by 30 days at no additional cost.”
So that means your one-year membership is now a thirteen-month membership. But what if you haven’t bought Elite yet? “If you’re still considering becoming a premium member, we’re going to extend Founder eligibility until the end of the month,” the statement continues, “and you will also receive the additional 30 days of access.”
So that’s thirteen months of Elite and a one-month extension on Founder eligibility. A decent enough consolation package for premium members, but the free users will have to simply wait for Elite to get back online before they can start tweaking their loadouts from work.
Stay tuned for an interview with Activision on what’s happening with Call of Duty Elite.

A while back, I wrote a Breakfast Topic on technology that got folks up in arms. It seemed that while most people were fine with the majority of steampunkish Gnomish and Goblin technology (and some absolutely loved it), the one piece of equipment that ground more gears and got the cranky juices flowing was the gun. The people who didn’t like it found it intrusive and at odds with the world around them.
I’m personally of the “Are the stats better? I’ll take it!” variety, so gun or bow, I don’t think about it that much. I don’t care for the noise of the gun, but that’s my only gripe. At the same time, I don’t do much roleplaying, so I don’t have to worry about whether a gun would be appropriate for my character’s storyline. Plus, my characters that are able to use guns are alts, so I’m not terribly committed to them.
What about you? Are you vehemently anti-gun? Or are you cool with it, as long as the stats are an improvement? If the stats were exactly the same, which would you go with — a gun or a crossbow? Aha — see, you do have a preference! Tell us what drives it!

So last week, I had meant to cover all of the impressions from the head start of City of Heroes Freedom. What I actually managed to cover was the Paragon Market, which is to the whole of City of Heroes what my nose is to the rest of my face. It’s not the first time that a small part has taken over a column, though, and so we’re bravely forging ahead into the actual content updates that came along with this patch. And let’s be honest, they’re pretty significant — a new zone, a new signature arc, changed power pools, and so forth.
Unfortunately, my time with the new content hasn’t been as extensive as I would have liked, so there are some parts of the update that I really haven’t gotten to sink my teeth into just yet. But I can definitely offer my feedback on what I have seen so far and hopefully rectify the stuff that I’ve still missed out on in the near future. So is this update all that and a bag of chips, or is it somewhat less awesome than advertised?

We’ve been waiting for the announcement of who would close out BlizzCon 2011 with an awesome concert, as has been the BlizzCon tradition. This year’s concert headliner will be Foo Fighters with Dave Grohl. It’s a different direction from the previous year’s Ozzy Osbourne and Tenacious D, but it’s going to be a great concert nonetheless. The high-schooler in me is really excited to see Foo Fighters. I feel old now.
You can get access to the concert by purchasing the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket or by attending BlizzCon. Get to the concert hall early if you want a good seat, though. It packs up pretty fast.

From WOWHEAD,
The Darkmoon Faire makes its return in 4.3 and one thing is for sure: it’s finally getting the awesome revamp it deserved.
Shrouded in mist, sequestered away on its own island, the Faire returns with aplomb with mounts, vanity pets, and everything else you’d expect from a redone faction. From Tonk Battle Royale to Whack-a-Gnoll, it’s got a few games up its sleeves like any good carnival should have as well. Some of the bigger changes also include:
- Players will be able to work behind the scenes to earn skill points, up to five per week, to their professions of choice through quests.
- Inspired by the Gurubashi arena, there will be deathmatches for prizes every three hours.
- A new item, Darkmoon Artifacts will drop from battlegrounds, dungeons, and so on and will allow players to turn them in for rewards.
- New heirlooms will be added through the Faire.
- Most importantly, the Darkmoon Faire will bring back long-lost armor sets for transmogrification! Read more…
