FINAL FANTASY XIV Reminding Your Password Security

April 28th, 2011

This is an important reminder for customers with either PlayOnline accounts or Square Enix Accounts.
In the event that another company’s online service experiences a data breach, use of the same name and
password across multiple services could lead to an unknown third party gaining unauthorized access to your
accounts.

Accordingly, we advise that you take extra precautions to protect your Square Enix Account. In order to
maximize security, we would like to remind you of the following password management practices:

* Do not use the same password for multiple online services
* Do not use repeated strings of characters, phone numbers, birth dates, or other similar information in your password Read more…

The Player’s Impressions of Trion Worlds’ RIFT

March 4th, 2011

BY Mike Bitton,

I’ve had an interesting journey with Rift. Truth be told, when the game was first announced as Heroes of Telara I honestly passed it off as just another fantasy MMO in the oversaturated fantasy genre. Fast forward to 2010 and Trion made it clear they were serious about making a splash in the MMO genre as they really pushed the game and got gamers to give it a closer look. Even as the hype train was rolling out of the station I wasn’t truly convinced until I flew out to Trion Worlds late last summer to check the game out for myself where I was shocked to find out how polished it was in its pre-alpha state.

Since then the game has improved exponentially as it pushed through the beta process and into launch, with Trion being extra attentive to player feedback and quite agile in implementing changes in response to that feedback. Months ago the unique Soul System was quite a bit less impressive than it could have been as it took forever to really sink your teeth into it. Today you can choose from all eight souls from the get go and have many more points to spread across your three souls of choice even early in the game. Most developers would not dare to make such substantial changes to the game design so close to launch, and I was honestly surprised to see Trion make it (among other things) happen. Read more…

EVE CEO’s Letter – Fanfest

February 28th, 2011

Fanfest 2011 is just a few weeks away, and I wanted to share a few thoughts with you about it and why you, no matter the personal or professional cost, should join us to celebrate the serious business of internet spaceships. Fanfest is about celebrating EVE Online and about making it better. The first was a lot larger than we’d expected and it has only grown exponentially since. As hundreds of pilots from all walks of life and all corners of the Earth (and the EVE universe) come together, a deep, volcanic like power is born. A real, palpable force that stirs the fires within. It’s impossible to conceive of until you experience it. People from across the globe descend upon Iceland, a country that has fewer people than there are EVE pilots. Amazing.

And there you are in the middle of it—a player who, if you are extremely lucky, knows a dozen EVE players in real life. Suddenly you’re surrounded by hundreds of others who, like you, have built their own experiences out of EVE’s sandbox. For me, it was a complete shift in how I regarded EVE, even though I loved it so dearly before. After my first Fanfest it seemed so much bigger… Read more…

Final Fantasy XIV: the Little Ladies’s Day

February 16th, 2011

Thus far, the holidays of Final Fantasy XIV have closely paralleled those of Final Fantasy XI, and the latest holiday announcement continues that trend in probably the best way possible. After all, one of the charms of the older game has always been its unique and sometimes offbeat holidays, a tradition held over in the brand-new Little Ladies’ Day. It’s a chance for players to celebrate the coming of spring, blossoming trees, and of course, their diminutive feminine side.

RuneScape Celebrate Its 10-Year Anniversary

January 27th, 2011

RuneScape just celebrated its 10-year anniversary and is bringing back the Wilderness and Free Trade due to an overwhelming response from players. We talked with Mark Ogilvie about these topics and more!

Ten years. Many MMOs are lucky to last half that, but RuneScape has been chugging along since 2001. In addition to reaching this impressive anniversary milestone, Jagex recently held a referendum asking players if they want to see the Wilderness and Free Trade return to the free-to-play game. More than 1.2 million votes were cast in just under three weeks, and an overwhelming 91% of players said they wanted these features back in RuneScape. Jagex listened, and they’ll be implemented on Feb. 1. Read more…

Masqueraiders available in-game of Dofus, April 2011

January 22nd, 2011

Hunted for their masks that give them their powers, the Masqueraiders are suspicious of everything. Their real faces are very rarely seen and no-one truly understands their motives: they can appear to be solitary valiant knights or rebels with their own agenda, they can be guided by their faith, by the values or by their feelings (like vengeance, for example).

Masqueraiders have three basic masks: the Classic mask, the Cowardly mask and the Psychopath mask. Each mask gives them a bonus and a different style of combat: the spells vary according to the mask. As a result, the Masqueraiders can sometimes be good at long-distance, sometimes close combat, sometimes defensive and sometimes very in your face! In other words, they’re quite unpredictable characters… Read more…

Is FFXIV Really that Disappointing?

January 19th, 2011

The developers wanted to make FFXIV a good game, they created a visually amazing Erozea world, they tried to invite you to play different classes, they hoped that casual players won’t be left behind by hardcore players, and they brought the very authentic Final Fantasy combat system from the console. But all of those that could make FFXIV a big hit just brought big disappointment: too luxurious graphic disappointed a group of people who don’t have high end machines, the fatigue system didn’t please too many casual gamers, let alone hardcores, and the combat was said to be a joke.

Wings Over Atreia: Conquering the level grind

June 25th, 2010

So what’s a girl like you doing in a grind like this?

I can’t tell you how many times a variation of this line has been lobbed my way regarding Aion. Hi everyone! I’m MJ and I have taken the Aion torch from Jef as he has moved over to cover EQII. I am looking forward to soaring through the Aionosphere with you.

If you haven’t heard about the loudest gripe ringing out over Atreia, please let me know what rock you’ve been hiding under lately so I can join you; even people who can’t distinguish Aion from linguine seem to have this answer down pat! OK, all together now — THE GRIND. We all know it, we all live it, and some have lost their remaining scraps of sanity due to it. Those who made it to level 35 still have the brick prints on their foreheads from slamming into that wall. Those who braved to 40+? Well, their foreheads are a bit squishy from repeated slamming.

While you’re waiting for Patch 3.3.5 to hit the live servers, you can check out Blizzard’s latest preview of the final raid instance in Wrath of the Lich King — the Ruby Sanctum. Ghostcrawler on guild organization in Cataclysm

June 18th, 2010

In response to players’ concern over guild organization and management in Cataclysm, Ghostcrawler’s been frequenting a thread answering questions about their design goals for guild leveling and why developers decided to axe guild talent trees.

While you should definitely read all of his responses, there are a few points concerning the new system that really jump out:
They didn’t want to encourage guild-hopping, and forcing a guild to pick and choose among talents would have wound up suiting some players and not others (e.g. a guild leader picking PvE-oriented guild talents and alienating the more PvP-focused players in the guild). Hence the leveling system rather than the almost-inevitable squabble over which talents to get.
