A new world record for simultaneous FPS participants was set over the weekend. Man vs. Machine, a browser title from MuchDifferent, is the new champion thanks to its ability to support 999 players on a single battlefield at the same time.
MuchDifferent CEO Christian Lonnholm says that Man vs. Machine smashed the previous record of 600 simultaneous combatants held by Sony Online Entertainment’s PlanetSide, and he also viewed the event as a resounding success despite missing the stated 1,000-player goal by a single digit.
“I am very proud that we could show the world such a massive game with no lag and great responsiveness,” Lonnholm said. “We never managed to get the full thousand, though, because of the inherent unpredictability of the internet with players constantly timing out and logging out.”
Head past the cut for a video of the record-setting event.

In an announcement of new Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Vita media (in our gallery), Capcom shared some kind of weird news about the portable port: it allows you to use the Vita as an “Ultimate Controller” for the PS3 version. We’re guessing this means you’ll be able to use the touch controls when playing the console version. We’re sure Hori and Mad Catz are raising their collective, corporate eyebrows at the “Ultimateness” of that option, but more options are always welcome.
In addition, the Vita version will offer “exclusive Gold Herald” color options for the characters, essentially making the game look like a battle between Academy Awards. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be released on February 15, concurrent with the Vita’s week-early “First Edition” hardware bundle, providing an escape from Little Deviants.

“If we had simply cloned a successful MMO, I think we’d have a battle on our hands, but we didn’t,” says TERA Europe producer Stephan Krippendorf. He’s talking, of course, about the inevitable World of Warcraft comparisons that dog every new fantasy MMO (comparisons that seem particularly irrelevant given TERA’s impressive visuals and divergent combat).
“When you dive into the game for the first time, swing a sword, cast a spell, dodge and weave in combat, you’ll be hooked,” Krippendorf explains in an interview at Videogamer.com. The sit-down covers a bit about the game’s action combat mechanics as well as the story elements and the endgame political system, but most of the juicy tidbits center around the title’s potential success in a crowded MMO market.
“I think TERA has what it takes to be a huge success though, regardless of WoW numbers,” Krippendorf concludes.

The Repopulation is getting a graphics makeover according to the latest developer update. Above & Beyond Technologies has updated its website with a look at what happened during the month of November, and at the top of the list is a “major revamp to the character models” as well as new building and environment models.
Other milestones include the implementation of the game’s weather system (including rain, snow, dust storms, sand storms, and meteor showers) and various combat and crafting abilities. Work also continues on the game’s “awakening” sequence and starter/tutorial areas, with the goal being a more polished newbie experience than that of your typical non-linear title.
The Repopulation is a three-faction sci-fi sandbox with toggle-enabled action combat and a substantial crafting system. The game is scheduled to begin beta testing in 2012.

Diablo III is not an MMO by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly has some strong online elements like previous installments. It also has a lot of expectations to live up to, several of which are discussed in a recent PC Gamer interview with Wyatt Cheng and Andrew Chambers. Both designers discuss the challenge level of the new Inferno difficulty, which is aimed at max-level characters in good gear who have already completed the Hell difficulty level. They confirm that while it’s meant to be brutal, it can be played and beaten solo — although having a friend won’t hurt.
And speaking of getting by with a bit of help from one’s friends, Cheng and Chambers both agree that twinking out new characters is a time-honored part of the game’s tradition; their job as designers requires them to find ways to ensure that twinking is a fun process for players. It’s the sort of interview that can leave fans wanting more of the game before it’s released — which ties in nicely to the fact that you can pre-order the Book of Cain (a collection of in-universe lore and artwork) on Amazon right now. And you can even take a look past the break to see what the book looks like.

It may be a bit before we get a solid release date out of Blizzard “Soon” Entertainment, but in the meantime, the company is keeping the hype training running steadily. Today we have a new interview from the folks over at PC Gamer, during which Diablo III’s game director, Jay Wilson, talks about the challenges of building a new game based on the Diablo pedigree while also ensuring that the title has a soul of its own.
For example, while many have decried the game’s “more colorful” environments, Wilson states that “if you make something, you can’t just copy. You have to infuse it with your own personality, your own interests, your own opinions, your own desires. If you don’t, then it will be soulless.” For the full interview, just click on through to PC Gamer.

The famously hacked Sony has a sympathetic shoulder this week, as Nexon recently discovered a massive breach that’s exposed over 13 million MapleStory player accounts to cyber ne’er-do-wells. Discovered this past Thursday, the breach was solely limited to South Korea, as Nexon hosts separate countries on their own servers.
This means that any South Korean MapleStory player’s information is at risk, including user IDs, names, passwords, and residential registration numbers. This information could potentially be stolen and used for a variety of crimes.
While there’s been no word whether actual personal information has been stolen, Nexon nevertheless urged these 13+ million subscribers to change their passwords. The company has contacted the police to ask for a formal investigation.
This comes at an unfortunate time for the company, as Nexon is poised to present its IPO on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December.

According to WOW(CN) publisher NetEase, Cataclysm will be released in China on July 12. What’s more, WOW(CN) will skip several patches and directly embrace the 4.1 version (Patch 4.1 released worldwide in April 2011). That could be good news for Chinese WOWers, for patch 4.1 lowers many instances’ difficulty.
WOW(CN) is gradually catching up with the world’s pace, but it’s still a very unique version, compared to the
official version, because of the Chinese censorship. Just like WLK, those parts that are considered bloody
and violent have been edited or removed.

When it comes to collecting aid for disaster relief, EVE Online developer CCP Games has a unique way of helping players donate. While many MMOs ask for donations or release limited-edition cash shop items, CCP has managed to devise a way for players to donate in-game currency to help people in the real world. During the relief effort for last year’s earthquake in Haiti, CCP began accepting donations of 30-day Pilot’s License EXtensions (PLEX) for their full monetary value in game time. With the recent devestation in Japan, CCP has once again asked for the EVE community’s help to raise money for relief aid.
Each PLEX bought on the in-game market and donated to charity represents 30 days of game time that someone in the world originally paid for with cash but that won’t be redeemed into game time. Because of this, CCP can donate the full cash value of that game time to a registered relief charity without taking a big loss. CCP absorbs all management and tax fees to ensure that 100% of the donated game time’s value is passed on to registered charities (in this case, the Red Cross). Read more…

It’s a good day to be in Vana’diel, as Final Fantasy XI’s much-awaited September version update is now up and running on the live servers. That means another increase in the level cap, new missions for Wings of the Goddess, and many other improvements to the game. The full list of changes may be found in the official patch notes, which also include a few pieces of information not previously disclosed.
As expected, the majority of the changes center around the increase of the level cap to 85, complete with levels for the previewed new abilities and traits. There are also several smaller quality of life improvements, and the usual array of bug fixes across the board. Players waiting for the update to download (which can take quite some time, as any Final Fantasy XI veteran can attest) can peruse the full list of changes and get ready for some interesting new experiences.

The start of a new phase of Final Fantasy XIV testing is always good news for the game’s fans, but this particular phase has brought with it even better news. Those of you not in the beta can now regale us non-beta testers with tales of your adventures, as Square-Enix has officially announced that most everything may be spoken about freely. This coincides nicely with a long list of changes that have come in the most recent build, including several system updates and balance tweaks to the engine.
The team at FFXIVCore immediately set to remedy one of the major omissions from Square’s PR — namely, the experience of crafting. This step-by-step diary of working as a crafter should answer many questions about how much depth the crafting and gathering classes possess… even though it raises several more. As always, it isn’t the same as getting to play around in the Final Fantasy XIV beta yourself, but it’s the next best thing to being there.

While some players are happily playing with the new features included in Patch 3.3.5, many others are unable to do so due to problems that cause the game to crash. Blizzard has noted this situation and is working diligently on a fix to this problem. In the meantime, a thread on the Technical Support forums addresses this issue and what players can do to make the game playable again. The issue appears to pop up as an Out of Storage error for players running World of Warcraft on a 64-bit OS. What can you do while waiting for a fix? Simple — turn down your graphics settings.
