Just in case speculation for Guild Wars 2′s launch date wasn’t running quite rampant enough, Amazon.de has begun taking pre-orders for the game. Furthermore, the site claims a launch date of June 30th, 2012.
Community members have already picked up on it, but is there truth in the date? We checked in with NCsoft West for the official word: “We have not released an official launch date within 2012 as feedback from our closed and open marketing betas will help us determine an exact release date. We will release Guild Wars 2 when it is ready.”
We do know that the Guild Wars 2 development team is revving up for plenty of beta testing in February, March, and April, and the company has confirmed that GW2 will launch this year.

World of Warcraft’s lead quest designer, Dave Kosak, let slip in an interview today that the recently released patch 4.3 will be the final major content update to hit Azeroth until Mists of Pandaria goes live. This is obviously a notable discovery, since it either means that Mists of Pandaria will be coming out soon, or WoW players are gonna be waiting a long time for the next patch. When asked if he believes that there’s enough content in patch 4.3 to keep users sated until MoP comes out, Kosak replied that “between the three excellent dungeons [the game has], the new raid, and Raid Finder that should give people something to sink their teeth into for a few months.” For the full interview, including a look back at the good and bad of WoW’s patch 4.3, click on through the link below.

Blizzard has been celebrating its 20-year anniversary with loads of fun features looking behind the scenes at the company including a look at a day in the life of John Shin, a QA analyst for World of Warcraft. His account of just a normal day around the office was written during the Cataclysm development cycle. Read about Shin’s adventures in the Blizzard gym, meetings with production specialists, and epic tales of squashing bugs and taking names. If you’ve ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes, especially during the ramp-up to releasing a finished title, check out John Shin’s story.
One of my favorite aspects of the story is that you get a real feel for how the culture at Blizzard wants games to be a vital part of the work environment. You’re making video games for a living, after all. You’ve got to stock the office and encourage game play in all aspects of the job so that you’re always thinking about what is fun and what works. John’s story highlights Blizzard’s goal of creating fun games within a fun atmosphere.

If you’re a titlemonger, then you’ll be excited for Patch 4.3. The latest update has added new titles, one of which seems to be a temporary title you gain for completing the Well of Eternity heroic dungeon. The new titles are:
Destroyer’s End
Savior of Azeroth
The Hand of Elune
The Savior of Azeroth title appears to be won by those who defeat Deathwing on heroic difficulty. The Hand of Elune title, meanwhile, is a temporary two-hour title one gets for completing the Well of Eternity dungeon and thoroughly mucking with history. Finally, Destroyer’s End is the title earned for killing Deathwing on normal or heroic difficulty.
So if you collect titles, you’d better get to work, guys. Patch 4.3 has two really nifty ones waiting for you.

Since launch, Star Trek Online has always used the Borg as a major threat. This is evidenced by the Borg’s position in several of the game’s Strategic Task Forces, top-end challenges for the best of the best in the Federation and the KDF. The conversion to free-to-play will include improvements and updates for these STFs, starting with a change explained in the latest installment of the Path to F2P blog series.
The first change is the shift to two separate difficulty modes, Normal and Elite. STFs are also being added to the PvE queue feature so that players can more easily assemble a group. Last but not least, the missions will feature special rewards that can be traded for a variety of anti-Borg equipment, allowing successful players the chance to better tune their ships for future runs. These updates won’t reduce the threat level of the Borg, but they should help more players face off against one of the game’s marquee opponents.

Free trade is as simple as it sounds: the ability to trade with other players without limits. You can trade as much or as little as you want with other players, as often as you want.
The act of trading is when you and another player exchange coins for items, or items for items. Free trade means that the items and coins being exchanged do not need to be of equal value. Indeed, you can even give coins/items to another player for nothing in return should you choose. There are no restrictions on how much (or little) you can request in exchange for what you are selling.
With free trade, though, you’re able to take advantage of those rare opportunities to sell an item much higher than this guide (if you can find a player willing to buy at such a high price). An example might be to sell law runes somewhere far from a bank where players just want a quick teleport out, and are willing to pay over the odds for it. Another example might be to head to Edgeville and sell food to players preparing for some PvP combat in the Wilderness. Read more…

EVE Online is an open-ended Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG). Most other MMORPGs focus on a structured playing style with predictable outcomes and monotonous leveling. This seemingly innocent fact is why EVE is so different from almost all other MMORPGs, as the players have an incredible impact on how the game develops.
One could compare this to the difference between a playground, such as EVE, and a theme park, which would be the traditional MMOG. Read more…

Back in August, we brought you the news that an exhaustive Hungarian EVE Online guide had been translated into English and released online for free. The Industrial-Sized Knowledgebase (or ISK for short) represented years of collaborative efforts between players to produce the ultimate all-inclusive strategy guide for EVE Online. The creators of the gargantuan guide have now teamed up with CCP Games and MMM Publishing to bring the entire book up to a professional standard and update it with information on the Incursion expansion.
MMM Publishing is the team behind the hugely successful official EVE magazine E-ON. The company’s previous collaborations with EVE players and CCP include print copies of EVE Strategic Maps and the EVE Career Guide. A basic version of the new updated ISK guide will be released for free as a downloadable PDF document on February 1st. Following that, the team will then begin work on an extended 500-page premium edition, which will be available for purchase as a digital download or a full print copy some time this spring. The final price and release date have not yet been decided, but as the ISK guide is the closest thing EVE has to a full manual, the print copy is sure to be a popular item.

Blizzard has big plans for gnomes and trolls, with brand new starting areas and questing experiences available for those races when Cataclysm launches. But before that can happen, they need your help! There are some awful baddies that’ve been crashing on their couches, and they’ve been kickin’ around for far too long.

We’re getting a lot of info today about Battle.net’s new features. First it was Facebook integration and now a full explanation of the Real ID features. We previewed some of the features of Real ID before and there were some concerns. This Battle.net feature is completely voluntary and requires mutual acceptance. So the only people who will be your Real ID friends are the ones that you agree to (and they have to agree as well).
Real ID features
Real names for friends Your Real ID friends’ names will appear next to their characters. Cross-Game chat You will be able to talk to your Real ID friends cross realm and in other games like StarCraft II and Diablo III. Rich Presence You will be able to snoop see what games and modes your Real ID friends are playing. So you’ll know if they are just hanging around Dalaran. And they’ll know the same about you. Broadcast You can broadcast short messages to all of your Real ID friends and view recent messages that they have broadcast. Friend once, see all characters Real ID friends can see all of each other’s characters. All. You won’t be able to pick and choose which ones can be seen, unless they are on another Battle.net account. Again, both friends have to agree to become Real ID friends and this will not be a mandatory feature of Battle.net. This is obviously a feature that you will want to use only with people that you don’t mind knowing what Blizzard game you are playing on which character and where.

By now I’m sure you have read the priest class preview for Cataclysm and, assuming that you have any feelings toward the priest class, felt a multitude of emotions toward it. Whether you stayed up late with the rest of us last night or swallowed it all this morning, the announcements are certainly shocking. I don’t think anyone expected us to be cloth-wearing death knights in the next expansion. I will get to that later, though. If you didn’t already guess from the title above, I will be providing a full assessment of the class preview for healing priests.
Having already browsed at reactions on the forums, I want to assure you that I am going to stay mostly level-headed with my review. I of course do this because I’m in no way bitter about waiting 15 hours for Blizzard to give me a winky-face at 2:58 a.m. EST, saying it’s still the 7th of April in Anaheim, California. Anyway, whatever your feelings on the preview have been so far, hit the jump and I promise I won’t spare you any variety of perspective.

Much like the Loch Ness Monster, the console MMO is a rarely-seen creature which nevertheless has captured the imagination of many. (Unlike the monster, console MMOs are not admitted hoaxes perpetuated by willing disbelief and a lakeside town’s need for tourist revenue.) We’ve yet to see much progress made toward console MMOs, despite the huge available market (see also: China) and the increasingly robust hardware of consoles. Even more notable is the fact we’ve already seen publishers promising the game for consoles without it happening, with Age of Conan and Champions Online being the biggest offenders. What’s the problem?
Syp recently asked and tried to answer this very question, noting that most of the problems come from the console hardware, both its short lifespan and lack of several input devices. Still, it hasn’t stopped many from playing and enjoying Final Fantasy XI on the Playstation 2, nor does Sqare-Enix seem worried about placing Final Fantasy XIV on a console. The lifespan of consoles can also be somewhat elastic — almost anyone who plays console games holds on to their systems longer than their market lifespan. Gordon at We Fly Spitfires believes it may be a split in audience, since computers are more ubiquitous than consoles — but computers capable of serious gaming are far less common than the PS2. Whether a hardware issue or one of audiience, the breed remains elusive, though the subject of far fewer undewater searches and TV specials than the aforementioned lake monster.
