While recording the podcast last week, Rubi, Justin, and I discussed RuneScape’s subscription fee, which is soon to increase to a whopping… $8. Eight bucks doesn’t seem like much to me, but I remember when Ultima Online increased its monthly fee from $10 to $13 — players were pretty upset. “How dare an old game ask for more money?” seems to be a common refrain.

But if the game is good enough, why wouldn’t we pay what it’s worth to us, no matter its age? Consider Fallen Earth, which offers, as its highest subscription tier, a $30-per-month plan. I might pay $30 a month for a really awesome MMO (or to resurrect one I’m fond of). But what’s the limit? $50? $100? What’s the highest sub fee you’d pay — and what would you expect out of the game for that price?

RIFT Live Producer Hal Hanlin and Systems Producer Adam Gershowitz were flagged down by fansite Magelo to tackle a grab bag of various questions about the game, including the process of injecting this title into the hearts of the Russian populace. According to Hanlin, the Russian release of RIFT was “very smooth,” and he credits Trion Worlds’ partner in the region, GFI, with assisting in that.

Even as itemization improvements continue to roll into RIFT, the devs state that they’re constantly monitoring damage output. For the next patch, Warriors will see a buff to their DPS as attack power will be tweaked to boost the pain.

Hanlin promises that “soloable content is very important to us” and pointed at the success of Instant Adventures and the Chronicles of Telara as proof that Trion has responded to the desire for such content in the game.

The devs touch on small details from the recent patch and their vision for expert dungeons as well.

If you live in China and play online, you know the name ChangYou. The company is a bit less well-known over in the US, but it’s still made a name for itself with quirky titles like Zentia and Duke of Mount Deer. It’s also apparently making a massive amount of money. According to the company’s fourth quarter financial report, ChangYou wound up with a total gross revenue of $435.5 million, with profits surging to $248 million.

CEO Tao Wang says the company can thank a variety of games for its success — the aforementioned Duke of Mount Deer, an expansion for Tian Long Ba Bu, and the browser-based DDTank. The success of the company in the online market is just part of the ever-expanding Chinese marketplace, which generated over $5 billion dollars last year alone. That’s good news for ChangYou and its fans, since the company will enter the next year with plenty of money to generate more games.

Recent rumors held that THQ had canceled its whole 2014 lineup, including Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online. THQ responded shortly after with the cryptic announcement that it “has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO.”

According to a release calendar in today’s earnings report, DMO is still on. The title is listed in the “Fiscal 2014 and beyond” category (Fiscal 2014 begins in April of 2013, just after the original release date), alongside other games THQ claims are still in the works: Turtle Rock Studio’s unnamed FPS; Volition’s inSane; Homefront 2; and the “Patrice Désilets Original Title.” Additionally, THQ has “four unannounced core titles” for fiscal 2014 and beyond, indicating an intention to remain in business beyond fiscal 2014.

Somewhat closer to home, THQ also has two “unannounced core titles” for fiscal 2013 (this year through March 2013). That’s in addition to UFC Undisputed 3, Darksiders 2, South Park, a new WWE release, Metro: Last Light, and Devil’s Third.

TERA news is coming fast and furious lately, and luckily for En Masse, today’s blurb is a good one. The game is officially available for pre-order, and as you would expect, there are all kinds of options relating to various gifts and gadgets depending on where (and what version) you purchase. There’s also a bit of beta bribery in the form of automatic access to all five of the closed testing phases that begin this month and continue through April.

What about the editions?

Well, you can choose between standard, digital collector’s, and physical collector’s version, and the latter two come with an in-game mount and a couple of unique necklace items. The physical collector’s edition justifies its $79.99 price point with a cloth map, a soundtrack CD, a handbook, a compass, and a letter of marque. En Masse is also offering a couple of exclusives for purchasing directly through its online store.

Is stealing a virtual good deserving of a real-world criminal sentence? According to a recent ruling by the Dutch Supreme Court, the answer is “yes.”

The court recently upheld a ruling of a criminal case in which teens attacked another youth and forced him at knifepoint to relinquish his possessions in RuneScape, including an in-game amulet and knife.

The incident happened in 2007, and a lower court convicted the two thieves in 2009. One of the defendants then appealed to the country’s supreme court on the grounds that the stolen goods “were neither tangible nor material and, unlike for example electricity, had no economic value.”

However, the judges declared that these virtual items had value because they represented “time and energy invested” to acquire. The thieves were sentenced to 144 hours of community service.

When details of Blizzard’s upcoming casual MMO, code-named Titan, are incredibly scarce due to the developer’s ironclad secrecy, it falls to enterprising fans to ferret out any scraps of information that may exist. One such player on the NeoGAF forums was combing through a Blizzard job posting for a Franchise Development Producer and noted an interesting line that indicated the studio could be mulling over the idea of in-game ads for its next MMO.

The line in question specifies that one of the duties of the position is to “work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment’s next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience.” Whether this is a sign that we’ll be seeing billboards for Skittles while we raid or that players will be able to get endorsements and decorate their outfits a la NASCAR cars is anyone’s guess.

It’s important to note that the rest of this position entails a number of efforts to promote Blizzard’s “next-gen MMO” outside of the tight-knit gaming sphere, including comics, action figures, and short movies.

More often than not, when the subject of recruiting comes up, guild leaders can easily explain what they don’t want from a potential member. We’ve all seen the usual reasons for wanting to turn someone away, and there have even been a few write-ups that neatly label and describe troublesome members. But what qualities define “good” members?

Sometimes, it’s harder to pinpoint what makes a good guildmate, and the saying “I know it when I see it” usually results. But there are certain types of people that really make a difference in a guild, no matter what playstyle, and we have to look no further than the film The Seven Samurai for a rundown of those types. Recruit these seven members and you’ll be well on your way to creating a great guild atmosphere that will last. Let’s look at who they are in today’s Guild Counsel!

En Masse Entertainment has commented on a pending lawsuit by NCsoft that seeks to prevent the North American launch of TERA. As you would expect, there is virtually no detail on the proceedings, but En Masse publishing vice president Chris Lee does come out swinging, saying that the firm “outright rejects” NCsoft’s position and will fight it to the last.

NCsoft has alleged that former employees stole Lineage 3 code and art assets that were used to make TERA, and the firm has already scored a legal victory in Korea that resulted in jail time for some of the ex-staffers.

How all of this affects TERA’s U.S. release is unclear, though Lee says it’s business as usual for En Masse and its fans. “This situation has no impact on our continuing efforts to realize the vision we have for our game. We are committed to making TERA awesome and delivering the game to you on time on May 1st,” he writes.
