Ever wonder if MMO devs play the MMO they’re developing? Apparently the answer is yes in the case of Star Wars: The Old Republic. A new dev blog by BioWare executive producer Rich Vogel minces few words on that particular subject. “Every single one of us on the development team plays the game, and we see the same issues you do and where we need to expand,” Vogel writes.

The rest of the wall o’ text isn’t quite as illuminating. Vogel starts by defining bugs and exploits, and he offers a few generalities in regards to BioWare’s ability to quickly respond to both types of issues.

It’s worth a read if you’re heavily invested in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and you’ll find it on the game’s official site.

Preparations for EVE Online’s annual Fanfest are well underway, and CCP has updated its website with a blog entry that gives gamers an idea of what to expect if they’re coming to Reykjavik in March.

CCP is adjusting its VIP office tour prize package this year. A contest entry will only set you back one PLEX (as opposed to the $1,000 minimum bid in years past). There’s also a poker tournament, a silent auction, and a battle of the bands in the offing.

What does all this have to do with New Eden, you’re asking? Well not much, aside from the opportunity to drink heavily and put a name to a face when it comes to all those capsuleers you’ve been swindling and killing for the past eight years. Head to the official site for details on all the events and prizes.

RuneScape adds a new dungeon for mold time’s sake

It’s not really a proper fantasy game until you’ve fought your way through animated fungi, right? That’s the premise of the newest dungeon in RuneScape, the just-added Polypore Dungeon. Deep within the dungeon lives a solitary skinweaver who was born to be a healer, but she’s turned her powers to creating animated fungi for her own amusement. With her only other companion an ancient merchant that no longer has all of his faculties, her domain isn’t a prime vacation spot… unless, of course, you’re a skilled adventurer looking for new items and new craftable armor.

The new dungeon can be reached north of the Duel Arena bank, with most of its contents requiring a high level in various skills. The inhabitants are non-aggressive, however, allowing any and all members to take a look at the place freely. Other updates include an improvement to the Slayer interface and the UI option to switch bloom lighting on or off, which should help improve your overall experience whether or not you decide to go mushroom hunting.

Want to know more about The Secret World’s Templar faction? Aside from reading up on everything related to Templar Week, the best thing you can do is tune in to Funcom’s next Facebook developer Q&A session.

The shindig happens tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. EST, when lead content designer Joel Bylos and writer Ben Schroder will be fielding your Templar-related questions. Funcom’s press release says that interested gamers are free to submit their questions in advance, but the devs may not be able to answer everything.

Thus far Templar Week has served up some new screens, art, and a few mission details, and the dev Q&A looks to be the icing on the cake. Funcom also notes that the Illuminati faction will be getting a similar week-long publicity treatment in the near future.

If you’re looking forward to the future of warfare today, you’re probably keeping a close eye on the development of MechWarrior Online. And the developers are no doubt aware of this, as they’ve just posted a lengthy set of answers on the game’s official forums, covering a broad range of topics from update speed to character development. While the answers confirm that at this point the software is still yet to see an alpha test, there’s still a great deal of information therein.

Aside from a few answers that are likely to prove discordant come launch (such as plans for biweekly update patches), the team is aiming at starting off with a strong PvP environment with persistent world elements in a similar fashion to MAG. PvE will not be in at launch, but it is on the table for later release. That’s only the barest summary of the information in the full set of answers, which should keep any intent pilot eagerly anticipating his or her personal ‘Mech.

Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 tech compared by Digital Foundry

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

Denizens of the internet have pitted Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 against each other in all manner of arenas — story, multiplayer, level design, slow-motion door breaching sequences — but what about WHO HAS THE BEST INTERFACE LATENCY?

Digital Foundry tackles one of gaming’s fiercest rivalries in a way that’s more educational than incendiary, focusing on the ways in which the technology powering each franchise has evolved over the years. With sophisticated lighting techniques and more granular destruction, DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine seems primed to embrace a next generation of systems, while Infinity Ward’s slick performer maintains its seductive framerate on consoles and lightning-fast controls.

It’s presented as another round between two shooter giants, but the commentary on the underlying technology, which is demonstrably different despite similar scenarios and subject matter, is a good reminder of how much time, research and investment is poured into EA and Activision’s flagship products — beyond the boisterous marketing.

J. Allen Brack talks to Wired about Pandaren and pet battles

J. Allen Brack, the production director for World of Warcraft, was interviewed by Wired.com about the upcoming expansion Mists of Pandaria, why introduce the Pandaren now, and what the future holds for the increasing number of expansions needed to be purchased to play an up-to-date version of the game. Brack says that the idea for the first neutral race actually was rooted in the Goblins for Cataclysm, since the Goblins would have made an excellent neutral race, but the team was adamant about giving the Alliance a more sinister race to play. The Goblins for the Horde filled the whimsical role nicely.

The Pet Battle system coming with Mists of Pandaria is also going to require a lot of tuning according to Brack. The feel of the system is going to be much more “rock, papers, scissors” than “all-powerful rare pet wins the fight,” giving a lot of hope to collectors out there who want to use some of the more esoteric companions in battle without having to always pull out the best pet.

Finally, Brack made an important point about the “expansions every year” comment and goal of the development team. Brack explains that the concept is nice but not something feasible in the present time, and that Blizzard has not been successful with rapidly turning out content. Cataclysm, it turns out, took longer to develop than any other expansion.

If you’ve been wanting to sign up for the Annual Pass announced at BlizzCon, only to find it not available in your region, you may want to check the page again. Blizzard just announced that it has expanded the pass to include more countries, including Russia, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile and more. The World of Warcraft Annual Pass is a one-year commitment to the game. You do not have to pay for your year in one lump sum, you can keep making payments in the same increments you’ve always done before — you’re simply committing to a year’s worth of payments with the Pass.

In return, you get Diablo III for free, the Tyrael’s Charger flying mount for your Warcraft character, and access to the next WoW expansion beta test. So if you’ve been itching to play Diablo III, dying to test new expansion content, or simply craving a new winged pony to ride around on in game, this may be the solution for you. You can sign up for the Annual Pass on Blizzard’s website, and if you’ve got any questions about the process, they have an official FAQ available as well.

EA: Battlefield 3 multiplayer will keep players coming back despite MW3 launch

While he neglected to sling any specific mud at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund believes that Battlefield 3 multiplayer will make players “feel loyal” to the game, even in the face of Activision’s annual juggernaut. “We all respect what Call of Duty brings and what they’re going to come with,” Soderlund recently told IGN, though he believes EA has “an industry-leading multiplayer game that will make people want to stay with us, frankly.”

Soderlund sees Battlefield 3′s multiplayer as a service that allows players to “continually get updates and new content and hopefully improvements to the product as we go.” One such piece of content will be this December’s “Back to Karkand” DLC, which Soderlund promises will contain more destruction than the current multiplayer maps. “It’s a different level, even more so than in BF3,” he said, adding that the DLC team made a “deliberate decision” to ratchet up the destruction for the upcoming content. Sounds like fun, so long as it doesn’t destroy the servers too.

EVE Online reveals Amarr tier 3 battlecruiser, the Oracle

November 2nd, 2011

Last year graphic designers and EVE Online fans from across the world competed in CCP Games’ huge Design-a-Starship contest. The ultimate contest winner was the incredibly impressive Minmatar Tornado, which was meant to be implemented in the game shortly after winning. The ship’s implementation was delayed until earlier this month, when CCP announced that the Tornado would be one of four new battlecruisers hitting EVE with the winter expansion. The new tier three battlecruisers are designed to use battleship-sized weapons and are specialised for mid range to long range combat.

In a new devblog today, CCP Guard revealed the Amarr tier three battlecruiser: the Oracle. Originally named the Mentor by its creator Alexey M, the Oracle appears to quite literally be a stripped down forward section of the popular Armageddon. The ship joins the Minmatar Tornado and Gallente Talos as yet another entry from last year’s design competition to be implemented in the game. The Caldari battlecruiser is still to be revealed, but we got a first glimpse of the ship from yesterday’s In Development video devblog and can confirm that it is also a player-submitted design.

New interview with Tony Park talks about Firefall’s post-release path

Firefall, the upcoming MMOFPS from Red 5 Studios, is aiming at heating things up with a release in the very near future. But perhaps you’re not in the beta and still want to hear more information about the game before it goes live. You’re in luck, then, as there’s a new interview out today for future players and general enthusiasts to examine. Tony Park, head of the Singapore office, talks about where the team hopes to bring Firefall in the days and months following release as well as the current state of the game.

Among the more interesting takeaways are the addition of a new class in the roster (the Dreadnaught) and talk about potential future e-sports participation within the game. Considering the activity level of e-sports in the eastern gaming world, it certainly makes sense that the team would have its eye on that as a potential future element of gameplay, especially with the game’s setup lending itself to competitive play. While the release is just around the corner, it looks as if the game will still have plenty for players to anticipate even after launch arrives.

A critical examination for Cataclysm

October 31st, 2011

null

If you want to buy some wow gold or wow item, please click here.

At different points in the Cataclysm expansion, my opinions varied greatly. It’s negative first, then slightly negative, and then outright positive about it as an experience. I read a thread recently discussing the Cataclysm as a failed expansion. Frankly I agree with a lot of this post, disagree with some. While today I’m going to talk what I was thinking about the Cataclysm expansion.

1. My point view of Cataclysm
Those are some of biases about Cataclysm expansion:
 The revamp of the old world zones was extremely well done. Levels 1 to 60 are an astonishing experience.
 The word Cataclysm is hard for me to spell. catacylsm or cataclsym quite often spelled.
 Quest design in Cataclysm’s zones is, for the most part, better than it has ever been.
 As a raider, I felt adrift in the start, and the time between the launch raids and Firelands felt too long. The three launch raids also didn’t feel at all like a starting raid experience, as Naxx/Sarth/Maly did. Firelands is an excellent, extremely fun, extremely well-designed raid, but it’s also the only game in town for this tier and I’m starting to get tired of it. In general, if you’re a raider or if you’re not, endgame content felt thin on the ground compared to The Burning Crusade or Wrath, which had more dungeons and heroics and comparable raid content, as well as a lot more zones to level through.

As a result, this leads to my biggest criticism of Cataclysm: its 80 to 85 zones. There were not enough of them. But in Wrath of the Lich King when you hit level 80, there might still have several zones you had not yet really explored to come in, quest, grind up some solid quest items before starting dungeons seriously. They were value-added, effectively. But it’s also not an easy task to get them all. So, usually, I check out on SwagVault.

2. However, just because I can find flaws in something, it doesn’t follow that thing has failed. It’s not even the case that the developers haven’t already found flaws in it.

If I could sit down tomorrow with the game’s development team, the first thing I’d want them to know is how much I enjoyed the game and the points why I didn’t love all of it. But if you’re going to approach every discussion of the game with the people who work on it as an adversarial process, you’re going to miss out on hearing what they have to say.

I usually like to wait until the last content patch is out and we can reasonably be said to have experienced all of its content before I do so. There’s some awesome content coming in this last patch, and I don’t think it fair to discuss Cataclysm’s overall success or failure until that content is out. Quite frankly, the best really is yet to come. And I’m looking forward to play it. Only one main criticism I have for this Cataclysm at this particular time is that: It didn’t have enough endgame world questing content.

3. What is constructive criticism?
If I really hated Trial of the Champion/Crusader as a content patch, does that make Wrath a failed expansion? No, of course it’s not. The game isn’t perfect. It has never been perfect. It will never be perfect. Perfection is the end. Perfection means there’s nowhere to go. Going places and doing things is the entire point. No one wants the game to never be perfect. But this doesn’t mean that Blizzard shouldn’t strive for constant improvement.

In a sense, the entire fight against Deathwing is an objective correlative for this struggle to always improve the game. I’ve argued before that change has been good for the game for the vast majority of its existence, and Cataclysm has been some of the biggest changes the game has ever experienced. Our task in every expansion is to tell Blizzard what we want in a way that allows it to make use of that information.

And constructive criticism is the kind of criticism that informs us: what didn’t you like, why didn’t you like it, what did you like and why did you like it, what Blizzard did right as well as what it did wrong, and why those things worked or didn’t work for you. And any personal attacks or cynical interpretations of every statement won’t contribute to helping the game get better. I think everyone knows it.

The community team has also been relocated to CCP’s Reykjavik offices “and will be working closely with every development team to ensure that players are kept up to date with what is coming to EVE.” CCP is aiming to increase communication with players and in the coming weeks, the company intends to begin by bringing out a series of short videos which will focus on what’s currently in development for EVE.
