EVE Online reveals Amarr tier 3 battlecruiser, the Oracle

Last year graphic designers and EVE Online fans from across the world competed in CCP Games’ huge Design-a-Starship contest. The ultimate contest winner was the incredibly impressive Minmatar Tornado, which was meant to be implemented in the game shortly after winning. The ship’s implementation was delayed until earlier this month, when CCP announced that the Tornado would be one of four new battlecruisers hitting EVE with the winter expansion. The new tier three battlecruisers are designed to use battleship-sized weapons and are specialised for mid range to long range combat.

In a new devblog today, CCP Guard revealed the Amarr tier three battlecruiser: the Oracle. Originally named the Mentor by its creator Alexey M, the Oracle appears to quite literally be a stripped down forward section of the popular Armageddon. The ship joins the Minmatar Tornado and Gallente Talos as yet another entry from last year’s design competition to be implemented in the game. The Caldari battlecruiser is still to be revealed, but we got a first glimpse of the ship from yesterday’s In Development video devblog and can confirm that it is also a player-submitted design.

New interview with Tony Park talks about Firefall’s post-release path

Firefall, the upcoming MMOFPS from Red 5 Studios, is aiming at heating things up with a release in the very near future. But perhaps you’re not in the beta and still want to hear more information about the game before it goes live. You’re in luck, then, as there’s a new interview out today for future players and general enthusiasts to examine. Tony Park, head of the Singapore office, talks about where the team hopes to bring Firefall in the days and months following release as well as the current state of the game.

Among the more interesting takeaways are the addition of a new class in the roster (the Dreadnaught) and talk about potential future e-sports participation within the game. Considering the activity level of e-sports in the eastern gaming world, it certainly makes sense that the team would have its eye on that as a potential future element of gameplay, especially with the game’s setup lending itself to competitive play. While the release is just around the corner, it looks as if the game will still have plenty for players to anticipate even after launch arrives.

A critical examination for Cataclysm

October 31st, 2011

At different points in the Cataclysm expansion, my opinions varied greatly. It’s negative first, then slightly negative, and then outright positive about it as an experience. I read a thread recently discussing the Cataclysm as a failed expansion. Frankly I agree with a lot of this post, disagree with some. While today I’m going to talk what I was thinking about the Cataclysm expansion.

1. My point view of Cataclysm
Those are some of biases about Cataclysm expansion:
 The revamp of the old world zones was extremely well done. Levels 1 to 60 are an astonishing experience.
 The word Cataclysm is hard for me to spell. catacylsm or cataclsym quite often spelled.
 Quest design in Cataclysm’s zones is, for the most part, better than it has ever been.
 As a raider, I felt adrift in the start, and the time between the launch raids and Firelands felt too long. The three launch raids also didn’t feel at all like a starting raid experience, as Naxx/Sarth/Maly did. Firelands is an excellent, extremely fun, extremely well-designed raid, but it’s also the only game in town for this tier and I’m starting to get tired of it. In general, if you’re a raider or if you’re not, endgame content felt thin on the ground compared to The Burning Crusade or Wrath, which had more dungeons and heroics and comparable raid content, as well as a lot more zones to level through.

As a result, this leads to my biggest criticism of Cataclysm: its 80 to 85 zones. There were not enough of them. But in Wrath of the Lich King when you hit level 80, there might still have several zones you had not yet really explored to come in, quest, grind up some solid quest items before starting dungeons seriously. They were value-added, effectively. But it’s also not an easy task to get them all. So, usually, I check out on SwagVault.

2. However, just because I can find flaws in something, it doesn’t follow that thing has failed. It’s not even the case that the developers haven’t already found flaws in it.

If I could sit down tomorrow with the game’s development team, the first thing I’d want them to know is how much I enjoyed the game and the points why I didn’t love all of it. But if you’re going to approach every discussion of the game with the people who work on it as an adversarial process, you’re going to miss out on hearing what they have to say.

I usually like to wait until the last content patch is out and we can reasonably be said to have experienced all of its content before I do so. There’s some awesome content coming in this last patch, and I don’t think it fair to discuss Cataclysm’s overall success or failure until that content is out. Quite frankly, the best really is yet to come. And I’m looking forward to play it. Only one main criticism I have for this Cataclysm at this particular time is that: It didn’t have enough endgame world questing content.

3. What is constructive criticism?
If I really hated Trial of the Champion/Crusader as a content patch, does that make Wrath a failed expansion? No, of course it’s not. The game isn’t perfect. It has never been perfect. It will never be perfect. Perfection is the end. Perfection means there’s nowhere to go. Going places and doing things is the entire point. No one wants the game to never be perfect. But this doesn’t mean that Blizzard shouldn’t strive for constant improvement.

In a sense, the entire fight against Deathwing is an objective correlative for this struggle to always improve the game. I’ve argued before that change has been good for the game for the vast majority of its existence, and Cataclysm has been some of the biggest changes the game has ever experienced. Our task in every expansion is to tell Blizzard what we want in a way that allows it to make use of that information.

And constructive criticism is the kind of criticism that informs us: what didn’t you like, why didn’t you like it, what did you like and why did you like it, what Blizzard did right as well as what it did wrong, and why those things worked or didn’t work for you. And any personal attacks or cynical interpretations of every statement won’t contribute to helping the game get better. I think everyone knows it.

A couple of days ago, CCP announced that an alarming number of team members had been laid off. Many EVE Online players were understandably concerned about what this might mean for the future of the game. CCP aims to put those concerns to rest with a new dev blog entry released today, which announces that CCP’s Community Team has been merged with Customer Support in order to form a new Customer Relations department.

The community team has also been relocated to CCP’s Reykjavik offices “and will be working closely with every development team to ensure that players are kept up to date with what is coming to EVE.” CCP is aiming to increase communication with players and in the coming weeks, the company intends to begin by bringing out a series of short videos which will focus on what’s currently in development for EVE.

For all the nitty-gritty details, head on over to the official post at EVE’s site.

EVE Online adding implants to killmails

October 20th, 2011

If you want to buy some EVE iskor EVE item, please click here.

When a ship is destroyed in EVE Online, half of its fitted modules are destroyed and half are dropped as loot. When EVE was young, the list of modules destroyed and dropped in a kill was sent in an in-game mail to both the victim and the player who got the killing blow. Today the killmail is stored in a players’ character sheet rather than clogging up his inbox, providing a record of all the ships he’s killed and those he’s lost in combat. When you destroy a player’s escape capsule, however, all you’re left with is a blank killmail and a tasty corpse floating in space.

In a new devblog, CCP Masterplan describes the introduction of one of EVE’s most requested features: implants on pod killmails. When an escape pod is destroyed, a list of all the expensive implants installed in the corpse’s head will be added to the currently blank killmail, letting players put a much more accurate value on successful kills. This comes as good news to corporations and alliances judging their war performance using killboard valuations.

Ship spinning returns to EVE Online

Everyone knows that internet spaceships are serious business. Relatively few, however, recognize the grave importance of EVE Online’s late great ship spinning mechanic.

Happily for the hardcore, those few include CCP developers, and as we mentioned a few weeks ago, one of New Eden’s favorite pastimes is coming back from the dead. A new CCP dev blog spills the beans on the release date, and EVE vets will probably be thrilled to hear that ship-spinning is coming to the Singularity test shard today. The feature is tentatively scheduled to return to the Tranquility live server on October 18th during an extended downtime beginning at 11:00 UTC.

CCP has also added the old hangar interface functionality back into the EVE client, and users with sub-optimal Incarna computer specs (or those who simply hate walking in stations) can opt to turn off the game’s captain’s quarters and party like it’s 2010.

From now until October 16th, players can take advantage of a discount on bulk orders of PLEX. Pick up a pack of 13 PLEX for only 199.99. Play the market, pad your wallet, build your empire.

Square-Enix announces end of Final Fantasy XIV’s free play and roadmap for next year

The latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV brought some major changes with it, but there are more coming. In a new series of announcements, Square-Enix announced that the unbilled period of the game will be coming to a close between late November and early December in recognition of the large-scale work done by Naoki Yoshida and the game’s team. But the announcement was more far-reaching than that — no, the entire game is going to undergo a major process of changes well through next year, including a graphical engine and UI overhaul as well as major changes to the game’s maps.

Several design documents have been posted along with this update, making it clear that the changes will be observed and influenced by players taking part in content during this time period. And these changes will be massive — the new UI will not only look much cleaner but also be able to support player add-ons. With a promised redesign of maps, changes to the landscape, the upcoming PlayStation 3 version, and major updates to the battle system and armoury system, it’s going to be very busy over the next few months as Final Fantasy XIV moves toward version 2.0.

The Old Republic accidentally taunts potential testers

What’s the worst thing that can happen when you’re waiting for a chance to play a highly anticipated game? Being inadvertently taunted about the fact that you aren’t in the beta. Star Wars: The Old Republic recently sent out a short survey asking for beta testers to take part, in the hopes of improving the overall testing experience. The only problem was that it wasn’t sent out to testers… it was sent out to everyone who had signed up to potentially be a tester.

A thread on the official forums has already reached absurd length, causing server hiccups and intermittent inability to properly access all areas of the site. It’s unknown how BioWare will apologize for this mishap (aside from a mention on their Facebook page) — certainly it’s not hurting anyone, but it’s probably the last thing that most people not involved in the current beta would like to see. And if you see this message in your email, rest assured, it’s no scam… just poor cross-pollination of mailing lists.

For the past couple of years, EVE Online and World of Tanks have been duking it out to see which game can outfox the other in the hunt for the MMORPG peak concurrent user record. As of this week there may be a new contender for the crown if ZT Online 2′s open beta period is any indication.

The game is a sequel to Giant Interactive’s popular ZT Online martial arts title, and the recent open beta period featured an impressive 435,000 simultaneous players online. Gamasutra has the details, culled from a Giant press release, and the company also indicates that approximately 400 developers have worked on the title over the past three years.

WildStar explores its Nexus

September 22nd, 2011

Wildstar explores

WildStar Wednesday is upon us, again! The team at Carbine Studios intends to give a weekly update for its upcoming MMO WildStar. Before finishing off part two of From Concept to Creature, Senior Community Manager Robert “Robeardo” Land decided to sidestep the creature aspect of the world and concentrate on the history of the WildStar central planet, appropriately named Nexus.

Robeardo had to call on the talents of Narrative Designer Chad Moore to assist him in the developer blog. Moore explains that Nexus was once the home of the Eldan, an ancient, advanced race that disappeared from the galaxy over a thousand years ago, leaving behind all of its technology to rot. Part of the excitement for the player is exploring the planet and unearthing artifacts. Moore explains further:
The rusting wrecks of giant robots lie half-buried in shifting desert sands, and strange and deadly alien creatures prowl in the shadows of extraordinary monolithic machines. And hidden among all of these wonders are the dark secrets of the Eldan themselves, and the answers to why they disappeared from planet Nexus so long ago.
WildStar is locking in the explorer type of MMO player, and we at Massively will keep our eyes out to see if it hopes to hook the social, killer, and achiever types, too.

Blizzard clarifies transmogrification rules

September 20th, 2011

Blizzard has been getting loads of questions about transmogrification, the new system coming in patch 4.3 which allows players to change the look of their gear from a piece of gear they currently possess. Many players have been asking for more gear customization and Blizzard has answered with this new system. However, there are rules, and Blizzard has finally laid out the full list of what can and cannot be transmogrified, as well as what types of restrictions apply. The list is not intended to be all-encompassing, but does give players a good idea about what is acceptable and what is not.

Personally, I am still of the opinion that a lot of the fun items that will not be available for transmog purposes should be. It’s Warcraft, after all, and the goofy aesthetic has permeated all aspects of the game. It’s not a huge loss, but one that would have its fun purposes. All in all, these transmog rules feel pretty lenient and acceptable to me, and I think that the new system is a great step in the right direction for more player customization.

Blizzard clarifies transmogrification guidelinesSince we announced the transmogrification feature coming to World of Warcraft with patch 4.3, we have monitored thousands of follow-up comments, questions and suggestions from players all over the world.

Guide to Brewfest 2011 achievements

Guide to Brewfest 2011 achievements

It’s that time of year again, folks: time to get smashed with no lasting social repercussions! This year, Brewfest runs from Tuesday, Sept. 20 to Wednesday, Oct. 5 (check your in-game calendar for your server’s exact start and end times), and drunken frivolity is the name of the game. The Brewfest meta Brewmaster is required for the year-long What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been, so you’ll want to get this done if you’re working toward a Violet Proto-Drake (and thus free 310% flight).

As with the 2010 version of this guide, I’ve organized the holiday’s achievements in the rough order I feel they should be completed, as one is dependent on having some help from other folks around your server. As with most holidays, there’s high participation at the start, which dwindles as folks get their drops and complete achievements, so I prioritize getting Down With The Dark Iron done as quickly as possible. Once that’s out of the way, Brewfest achievements aren’t generally difficult, though they’ll require a little elbow grease if you’re starting from scratch.

I’ve included all of the achievements attached to the holiday, but you’ll only need six for the meta, and they’ve been marked as such. As always, I’ll be around when the holiday goes live to see if there are any unannounced changes. We don’t anticipate any major differences to Brewfest this year, but the holiday boss, Coren Direbrew, does have an updated loot table with ilevel 365 drops.

FFXIV: Airships & Chocobo Mounts Coming in 1.19

September 1st, 2011

from Final Fantasy XIV Forums,

“Hot one day, cold the next. The weather has been getting kinda funky on the cusp of the seasons here. Hope you’re all managing to stay in good health while enjoying your time in Eorzea.”

The new Airships are finally coming to Eorzea in 1.19, together with Chocobo Mounts, to help make traveling around the realm more enjoyable. Ride a ‘horsebird’ to get wherever you need to go by land, or book passage on an airship to fly the quickest routes between Ul’ah, Gridania, and Limsa. Airship voyages themselves will take only mere seconds, though there will be sweet little cutscenes accompanying departures and arrivals.

View the list of planned changes for 1.19.
