Do you feel fine?
In the final days of the countdown to server merges in Aion this Wednesday, a mixture of emotions are on display on both sides of the battle. While some are feeling excitement, others are cautious, yet bridled with apprehension, and others still are simmering with discontent about the upcoming changes in Atreia. Some apathy has even reared up, as participation in fortress battles wane and the Balaur slowly re-establish their grip of power. Many simply feel a mixture of different emotions at different times (depending which side of the most recent ganking they came out on).
Although the physical make-up of the land is not going to change like it will when patch 2.0 goes live and the Balaur homeland is introduced, the landscape will still be changed. The player base — the very atmosphere — of each new server will be markedly different. The population explosion, the economy, abyss rankings, and even tracking reputations will all be affected by the merges. No question about it, life in Aion is going to be altered for every player — though for better or for worse may be more at the discretion of each individual player, their own attitudes, and preparation.

“SGDCZ DUZGZ RKZMC DCVHS GRDQU DQLDQ FDZMC BGZQZ BSDQS QZMRE DQCDS ZHKR” was the mysterious message posted by Aion’s Andrew “Tamat” Beegle yesterday. The jumble of letters on Twitter and the Aion notice page was decoded pretty quickly by players: “THE DAEVA HAS LANDED WITH SERVER MERGE AND CHARACTER TRANSFER DETAILS.”
Aion confirmed the server merge and character transfers today with more details as well as a comprehensive FAQ covering all the details. The merge will happen on July 7th, and character transfers will begin on the 8th. Players can take advantage of free unlimited character transfers until August 18th, and then they will continue to be available for a fee. Once the server merge happens and transfers begin, there will be a number of contests and events coming both in and out of game.
Check out all the details on the Aion site.

So what’s a girl like you doing in a grind like this?
I can’t tell you how many times a variation of this line has been lobbed my way regarding Aion. Hi everyone! I’m MJ and I have taken the Aion torch from Jef as he has moved over to cover EQII. I am looking forward to soaring through the Aionosphere with you.
If you haven’t heard about the loudest gripe ringing out over Atreia, please let me know what rock you’ve been hiding under lately so I can join you; even people who can’t distinguish Aion from linguine seem to have this answer down pat! OK, all together now — THE GRIND. We all know it, we all live it, and some have lost their remaining scraps of sanity due to it. Those who made it to level 35 still have the brick prints on their foreheads from slamming into that wall. Those who braved to 40+? Well, their foreheads are a bit squishy from repeated slamming.

Remember how NCsoft said prior to the 1.9 patch that there wouldn’t be any more of their patented Aion double XP weekends for awhile? Well forget all that as this Friday, June 11th, marks the beginning of yet another scrumptious smorgasbord of sweet, sweet experience for your level-hungry Daevas.
We’re not sure what changed their minds (and frankly we don’t care as long as the spice keeps flowing), but one thing we are sure of is that the event has caused us to rethink our weekend gaming plans. When combined with the hefty repeatable quest XP rewards littering the landscape around Heiron post-patch, we’d be remiss for not scarfing up as much as humanly possible. We might even, gasp, approach max level.

Thinking of returning to Aion to check out the 1.9 patch? You’re not alone, as folks are beginning to trickle back into the world of Atreia to partake in the improved XP and other tweaks. If you’ve deleted the game from your hard drive, or you’re a new player, you might want to check out the full client torrent that NCsoft has just released.
Given that the game has been out for nine months, and has been patched fairly regularly, you’re likely to have a lengthy download and update process if you re-install from your original game discs. Happily, NCsoft has bundled the entire game client, as well as all the patches up to and including last week’s 1.9, into a file that you can grab from FilePlanet. Alternatively, you can can grab a torrent from GamersHell or NCsoft’s own server.

Aion’s 1.9 patch has gotten a lot of press recently, and rightfully so, given the game-changing updates it brings to the table. With the big day officially scheduled for tomorrow, June 2nd, the community team has updated the official site with word on the expected server downtime, which currently stands at eight hours.
The servers will go dark at 4:30am PDT at the start of the process, which works out to an estimated 1.9 launch time of 12:30pm PDT tomorrow. Check out the announcement over at the official site, as well as the patch notes. While you’re at it, have a gander at some of our 1.9 coverage to get up to speed on the forthcoming changes.

Those of you rubbing your hands together in anticipation of Aion’s forthcoming 1.9 patch can now get the jump on the mere mortals who will be stuck downloading the mammoth update on launch day. In a notice posted on the game’s official website, the Aion community team clues us in on the option to download portions of the patch well in advance of the scheduled release (currently Wednesday, June 2).
“You can already prepare for this by pre-loading the patch and have it ready for installation on launch day. Your NCsoft Launcher will now begin to incrementally download the update over the next couple of days leading up to launch,” reads the notice.
You can also get a sneak peak at the 1.9 patch by logging into the Aion Public Test Server.

Everybody loves double-experience weekends, right? For a while now, they’ve been shoring up the XP gap in Aion, helping to push players over the hump of the long grind. While there’s an upcoming double-experience weekend starting this Friday, the Aion team has informed the community that these golden days of glory may be short-lived, with these special weekends becoming a rarer occurence in the future.
This seemingly-depressing announcement is actually because Aion is switching from “shoring up” to “fixing” XP issues. On June 2nd, patch 1.9 will hit Aion’s servers, and with it a host of solutions to the XP gap. The Aion community team has laid out three ways the XP will flow like rivers of honey. Wait, that would be slow and sticky. Let’s go with Jell-O. In any case, 1.9 will add more quests, increased XP for quests and a new “Energy of Salvation” system that awards experience bonuses the longer you play.
So while double-experience weekends might become a scarce event in Aion, it’s hopefully for the best overall.

Aion producer Chris ‘Kinslon’ Hager has dropped a bomb of a community letter on the game’s players, packing it full of information including the North American release dates for the highly anticipated 1.9 patch. The letter also mentions an upcoming character transfer service (free for a limited time), as well as server merges.
“I don’t relish the idea of mergers,” Hager says. “However, once it is complete you should notice improvements in each of the new server economies, an abundance of players to group and run instances with, a number of great Legions to join or people to form new ones with, and a more tightly knit community. When all is said and done, Aion will be a better game because of the server merge. We’re in the planning stages, and will have more information on the timing and execution in the coming weeks.”

You’ll have to forgive me for being somewhat surprised as I sit down to write this week’s column. I guess given the general grindiness of Aion’s high levels plus the weekly quota of “you sucks” that I get in ye olde inbox for daring to write about the game have conspired to make me a little bit gun shy when it comes to actually having fun in the world of Atreia. Oh, and let’s not forget about NCsoft’s refusal to answer tough questions (or any questions, for that matter) that your intrepid journalist has about Aion.
All that negativity aside, there must something to the whole yin/yang concept, as an otherwise detestable week yielded what has been one of the most enjoyable in-game experiences to date. It was such a blast, in fact, that I’m compelled to recount at least a little bit of my group’s harrowing run through the gauntlet colloquially known as the Xeno quest.

The Aion official site features a brief interview with producer Chris ‘Kinslon’ Hager regarding the forthcoming 1.9 game update. Though NCSoft remains as coy as ever regarding a release date for the elusive patch, Hager manages to drop a few hints about what’s coming.
Perhaps most interesting (or alarming, if you’re one of the eleventy billion assassins stealthing about) are the anti-stun mechanics being introduced. “If your character becomes stunned in combat, Remove Shock becomes available as a chain skill that you can use to remove the stun and increase your character’s resistance to stun, knock back, and similar conditions for seven seconds. At later levels, class-specific skills that you can also learn will act as chain skills that let you go on the offensive in addition to the basic abilities of Remove Shock,” Hager says.
He also mentions rewards for the much-anticipated daily quests. “The quest givers will offer are a wide range of rewards, from XP and Kinah to mist (time-limited) weapons, armor, and even some new titles,” he says.

Thanks to one crazy community manager that likes to tease information, we’ve gotten a sneak peek at the upcoming patch information for Aion — patch 1.9.
The patch is hosting a wealth of enhancements and updates to the game that includes a new looking for group system, quest updates, a brand new daily quest system, changes to the endgame dungeon Dredgion, a decrease in transportation and soul healing prices, increased experience gain, a two-handed weapon merge system, and much more. The whole thing actually totals over 26 pages of patch notes which NCsoft West are still translating for Western audiences.
Tomorrow, however, we’ve got a special look into some of the deeper mechanics of the patch, so be sure to come back and visit us at 11 AM Eastern time for all of the gritty details (as we need to be all hush hush until then.) But, for now, enjoy some beautiful concept art in the gallery below (in the form of desktop wallpapers) and a video of Aion’s “update 2.0″ patch stored after the break.

We know from the lore of Guild Wars 2 that Ascalon will become what is literally a ghost town thanks to King Adelbern, his sword Magdaer, and his last-ditch effort to drive out the Charr in a cataclysm known as Foefire.
The effects of the event reach farther than anyone would have thought in the first Guild Wars 2 novel, now officially titled Ghosts of Ascalon. The ghosts of slain Ascalon soldiers are the only inhabitants of the area now, defending their home from invaders and generally making it a pretty unwelcoming place.
In Ghosts of Ascalon, Queen Jennah is attempting a treaty with the Charr, who are unwilling to deal until the Charr artifact the Claw of the Khan-Ur is retrieved from — where else — Ascalon City. A small band of adventurers sets out for Old Ascalon to retrieve the artifact from a dangerous land and an unwilling ghostly king. (Since Lion’s Arch is gone, we assume they couldn’t find anyone to run them.)
The book is scheduled for release this summer in North America and Europe. For now, check out the FAQ on the Guild Wars 2 site.
