EVE Online has undergone countless changes and iterations since its first release in 2003, with major graphics overhauls and new gameplay systems arriving every year. In contrast, the official EVE website hasn’t changed much over the years. With background information, screenshots, video, forums and knowledgebase articles, the EVE website now juggles content designed for prospective players and existing community members alike. CCP aims to change all that with a complete overhaul that will split community tools like the forums, knowledgebase, and account management from marketing designed to attract players.

In a new video devblog, web-developer CCP Alice shows off some of the features of EVE’s brand new website. Built using HTML 5, the new page will feature a full built-in renderer able to show prospective players the EVE Online universe map and interactive renderings of every ship in the game. “Now that we have a better eveonline.com, the focus after this one is to focus on the community,” says CCP Alice, hinting that new community tools will soon be on the way. In a follow-up devblog today, Community Manager CCP Guard confirmed that players will soon be able to start their own corporation forums hosted on CCP’s servers. Check out the full video after the cut.

Preparations for EVE Online’s annual Fanfest are well underway, and CCP has updated its website with a blog entry that gives gamers an idea of what to expect if they’re coming to Reykjavik in March.

CCP is adjusting its VIP office tour prize package this year. A contest entry will only set you back one PLEX (as opposed to the $1,000 minimum bid in years past). There’s also a poker tournament, a silent auction, and a battle of the bands in the offing.

What does all this have to do with New Eden, you’re asking? Well not much, aside from the opportunity to drink heavily and put a name to a face when it comes to all those capsuleers you’ve been swindling and killing for the past eight years. Head to the official site for details on all the events and prizes.

Remember that dev blog about a year ago that mentioned updates in store for EVE Online’s neocom interface? Well, it hasn’t been forgotten, but the New Eden poo-storm of 2011 kind of bumped it to the back of the line.

Today, the EVE website has been updated with a look at the new neocom’s design, and CCP Optimal has plenty of pics as well as some insights into what’s changing below the pretty exterior. Chief among the tweaks is the ability for pod pilots to pick and choose the features they use most and remove extraneous buttons from the interface.

The Eve online winter expansion went live last week, adding new spaceships and fixing many elements of the Captain’s Quarters that have been frustrating players. Most people are pleased with new expansion. Let’s think back the last expansion- Incarna.
In a recent talk to PC Gamer, senior producer Arnar Hrafn Gylfason admitted that Incarna is a failture. He said Incarna only gave players some characters, the ability to walk around, some rooms, and nothing more. He pointed out “sure it’s a good step to being able to be a person and being able to see your person, but it’s a more important step for that person to be able to do something rather than just walk around. And I think that’s where we ultimately failed.”
It’s been about half a year since EVE’s Incarna expansion launched. The Incarna update added a series of unpopular features like the Captain’s Quarters and an item store selling expensive cosmetic items. However, Incarna wasn’t as popular as it should be among the community, and CCP admitted that they ultimately failed on the gameplay aspect.
Incarna’s problem was that it introduced some features “that the core community weren’t really excited for but had potential new markets”. It’s because the developer was “too focused on introducing the new technologies into EVE” and forgot “the more classical aspects of Eve Online”. CCP are keenly aware of Incarna’s faults, and Gylfason spoke to us honestly about the why Incarna failed. While the technology behind the new character creator and the captain’s quarters was impressive, Gylfason acknowledged that “we didn’t really do any gameplay around it, it was just “here are some characters, you can walk around and that’s it. That’s all you can do, you can walk around inside a small room.”
CCP went back on track in the latest Crucible update, Crucible is taking the first steps to set that right, adding new ships, brought back the classic station feature and improve the graphics. So are you satisfied with what CCP has done in Crucible?

If you haven’t managed to snag a spot in the DUST 514 beta, you’ll want to have a look at a fan site known as DUST 514 Base. The site posted a detailed look at the game’s vehicle fitting interface over the weekend, and it gives a good rundown on many of the options in store for the planet-based mercenaries of New Eden.

If you’re an EVE Online veteran, the fitting screens will seem somewhat familiar. If not, at least you can get a leg up on what is likely to be one of the more complex console FPS UIs in the business.

The blog entry contains a fair bit of speculation in terms of the numbers presented on the UI, and there are also plenty of high-quality images augmenting the text. Hit the links below for more info.

Back in June, the EVE Online community reacted negatively to the release of a lackluster Incarna expansion and controversy over microtransaction prices. Complaints eventually erupted into in-game riots with the leak of a company newsletter on microtransactions and an internal memo from the CEO denouncing complaints as noise. Players got together in trade hubs across the game to protest EVE’s development direction, attacking a pair of invulnerable monuments outside the systems’ major stations.

As a nod to players’ refusal to accept the status quo and force change, CCP recently altered the Jita monument that was the main focus of the summer riots. The statue now stands destroyed, and its plaque congratulating Heinky and Shin Ra of Burn Eden for solving a riddle contest several years ago has been changed to the text below:
“This was once a memorial to the winners of a riddle contest sponsored by late entrepreneur Ruevo Aram. After standing proud for half a decade, it was destroyed in late YC113 by capsuleers who were staging a mass uprising against an intolerable status quo of intergalactic affairs. Today, the ruins of this once-great work of art stand as a testament to the fact that change is the universe’s only constant.”
The change is currently only live on the test server, but will likely come to the main server on November 29th when the Crucible expansion launches. Thanks to Drew for the tip!

Minmatar? Check. Gallente? Yep. Amarr? Roger roger. Caldari? It’s about time! EVE Online’s battlecruiser rollouts are now complete thanks to today’s introduction of the Naga. Like its three factional counterparts, the new ship is coming courtesy of EVE’s winter expansion. Also, like the previous reveals, the Naga is the brainchild of an EVE player and it first appeared during last summer’s Design a Starship competition.

In addition to its fearsome lines and considerable bulk, the Naga is “equally capable of fitting large torpedo launchers, large rail guns or even blasters, [and] is easily the most flexible weapons platform of the four new battlecruisers,” according to the latest CCP dev blog. Head to the official site for further info and additional images.

Last year graphic designers and EVE Online fans from across the world competed in CCP Games’ huge Design-a-Starship contest. The ultimate contest winner was the incredibly impressive Minmatar Tornado, which was meant to be implemented in the game shortly after winning. The ship’s implementation was delayed until earlier this month, when CCP announced that the Tornado would be one of four new battlecruisers hitting EVE with the winter expansion. The new tier three battlecruisers are designed to use battleship-sized weapons and are specialised for mid range to long range combat.

In a new devblog today, CCP Guard revealed the Amarr tier three battlecruiser: the Oracle. Originally named the Mentor by its creator Alexey M, the Oracle appears to quite literally be a stripped down forward section of the popular Armageddon. The ship joins the Minmatar Tornado and Gallente Talos as yet another entry from last year’s design competition to be implemented in the game. The Caldari battlecruiser is still to be revealed, but we got a first glimpse of the ship from yesterday’s In Development video devblog and can confirm that it is also a player-submitted design.

If you’re a fan of EVE Online, I apologise in advance for the funny looks you get when you jump out of your seat yelling “HELL YES!” while watching the latest In Development video. In this second part of CCP Games’ new video devblog series, CCP Guard takes a live hand grenade into EVE Online’s art department to show us just what’s going on behind the scenes. We’ve already seen the impressive nebula effects and new Raven model due for release in the winter expansion, and today CCP showed off some massive shadow improvements, but those upcoming additions pale in comparison to what’s planned for after the winter period.

The latest In Development video shows that CCP is currently working on engine trails, custom ship skins, a new cyno effect, a new warp tunnel, and graphical upgrades for every single ship in the game. It’s a tall order, one that’s unlikely to be fulfilled in the winter expansion despite developers’ recent laser focus on delivering new features. The video gives a sneak peek at the models for the Amarr and Caldari tier 3 battlecruisers, which were selected from fan-submitted entries to last year’s design contest in a similar manner to the already revealed Minmatar Tornado and Gallente Talos.

Read on to find out why custom ship skins are more work to implement than most of us realise and to watch the new video in HD.
