Final Fantasy XI players have been waiting and hoping for a new expansion for more than half a decade now. All of those hopes have come true at last with the announcement of Seekers of Adoulin, a new expansion taking players to the far western shores of Vana’diel.

Seekers of Adoulin promises players new areas, new adventures, and of course new jobs. The only known new job at this time is Geomancer, which appears to be a support-style mage job with a variety of enfeebling and buffing abilities. Notably, its buffs appear to be centered on specific locations, and its enfeebling effects cannot be resisted by enemies, a trait that would make the job extremely powerful in the current environment.

A short trailer has also been released with the announcement. Curiously, the official site does not list the PlayStation 2 among the expansion’s supported platforms. That shouldn’t stop longtime players on every system from regarding the new trailer with excitement — it’s the cap to an announcement that’s been a very long time coming indeed.

Feel as if the last major Final Fantasy XIV patch just had too much to absorb at once? Well, you’re going to be a bit stuck today if that’s the case because patch 1.22 has just gone live and brought with it another host of improvements, updates, and changes. The good news is that this patch doesn’t contain the same number of system changes as the previous patch, but that’s because of the sheer amount of new content included.

The patch adds another four ranks to the Grand Companies, another set of quests, the new Garuda battle, the first of the hamlet defense points, and more besides. Players will also be able to obtain new items from crafting, gathering, and victory in the Garuda fight, and they’ll be able to see the first hints of what will happen to the world as the era draws to a close. Servers are expected to be back online later tonight, and players will no doubt have plenty to explore once they can log in again.

Final Fantasy XIV adds direct subscription options

As Final Fantasy XIV forges ahead with its revived subscription model, Square-Enix is showing signs that it is listening to its customer base in regards to options. The company announced that players can now directly subscribe to the game with a credit or debit card through the account system.

Previously, Final Fantasy XIV utilized a convoluted system that required players to purchase an intermediary currency called Crysta, which was then spent on monthly subscription options. Not only did players find this complex and unnecessary, but there were issues with buying more Crysta than one actually needed.

According to the company, the ability to directly subscribe via credit card was “by far the most popular request received from the community.” FFXIV began charging for subscriptions earlier this month after more than a year of free service.

Expected to drop on to the live servers later this week, Final Fantasy XIV’s patch 1.20 is bringing with it several large-scale overhauls to combat, leveling, and crafting. In anticipation of the patch release, the patch notes have just recently been posted on the official site; they contain a number of new pieces of information. Among the news is the revelation that players will be able to ascend even further in the ranks of the Grand Companies, and there are new rewards from the vendors as you climb to Sergeant Third Class.

The patch notes also contain the finalized levels and names of the various adjusted actions as well as discussion of the game’s new system for allocating bonus points per class. There’s also a small preview of the fight against Good King Moggle Mog XII with the video embedded just after the break. If you’re looking forward to the patch, it’s still not quite here, but having the full list of notes to inspect should help take some of the edge off.

Square Enix has announced a small delay related to Final Fantasy XIV, but we don’t think it’s one you’ll be upset about. Back in October, as part of the ambitious plan to revamp the MMO, Square Enix said it would begin charging a subscription fee in late November or early December. That date has been pushed to January 6, allowing you another whole month of … playing Final Fantasy XIV in its current form. Hmm.

If you want to set up a subscription for your current account, you’ll be able to do so starting December 16. Between January 6 and the release of “version 2.0,” subscription fees will be discounted to $6.99 per 30 days (with extra savings for longer periods). The “real” subscription fee when version 2 launches will be $9.99 for 30 days.

The latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV brought some major changes with it, but there are more coming. In a new series of announcements, Square-Enix announced that the unbilled period of the game will be coming to a close between late November and early December in recognition of the large-scale work done by Naoki Yoshida and the game’s team. But the announcement was more far-reaching than that — no, the entire game is going to undergo a major process of changes well through next year, including a graphical engine and UI overhaul as well as major changes to the game’s maps.

Several design documents have been posted along with this update, making it clear that the changes will be observed and influenced by players taking part in content during this time period. And these changes will be massive — the new UI will not only look much cleaner but also be able to support player add-ons. With a promised redesign of maps, changes to the landscape, the upcoming PlayStation 3 version, and major updates to the battle system and armoury system, it’s going to be very busy over the next few months as Final Fantasy XIV moves toward version 2.0.

Newest producer’s letter for Final Fantasy XIV talks patch release

September 22nd, 2011

FF XIV gil

Whether or not you’ve liked the direction Naoki Yoshida has chosen for Final Fantasy XIV, it’s hard to fault him for communication. His letters to the community have become a regular event, and even in the briefest installment he finds the space to share some interesting developments. The newest letter, for instance, is definitely on the shorter side, but it also confirms a target date of September 30th for the launch of the game’s next major patch.

Patch 1.19 is heavily anticipated by players, bringing with it chocobos, new content, and a variety of other systems. And not only is Yoshida planning to release the notes for said patch early, but the letter also hints at another major update — the addition of another 100 item slots for characters and 50 more for each retainer, greatly expanding each individual’s storage capacity. While the letter also notes that the patch may be delayed by a few days depending on the final round of testing, it should be enough for FFXIV players to see that the team is hard at work on the patch.

Final Fantasy XIV gearing up to celebrate its foundation

Final Fantasy XIV gearing up to celebrate its foundation

Another holiday is just around the corner for Final Fantasy XIV players, but this one is a bit different than the usual fantastic interpretations of real-world holidays. No, it’s Foundation Day, a day celebrating the formation of the original Grand Companies of Eorzea nearly a thousand years ago, starting on a day that will be quite familiar to anyone who has been playing the game for… well, just about a year now. (Surely there’s no need to spell that out.)

Starting on September 22nd and running until October 11th, the event will see recruitment officers for each of the companies stationed in the three cities, attempting to elicit more permanent membership from the adventurers running about. Exactly what the event will entail isn’t yet known, but it’s a safe bet that it will involve company seals and tie in to the upcoming expansions of the company system in patch 1.19. It also hints that we may see that patch on an obvious date, considering that the event will likely have to be patched in…

FINAL FANTASY XIV: About Beastman Strongholds

September 13th, 2011

Beastman strongholds – these enemy fortifications that will soon rise across the Eorzean landscape. Teeming with foes and home to copious treasure chests, strongholds are formed of multiple sections, each of which is guarded by a contingent of defenders.

Adventurers must cut their way through line after line of enemy resistance, breaching one gate after the next, before finally reaching the heart of the compound. Be forewarned: fearsome adversaries lie in wait within, ever ready to put a swift end to those trespassers who enter unprepared.

A stronghold erected by the Amalj’aa, its name meaning “like a rock” in their native tongue. Its location was said to be chosen by thaumaturges who, through ancient rituals, divined the position to be auspicious for waging war. Beginning life as a humble frontier outpost, over time Zahar’ak grew to become the foremost Amalj’aa base in all of Thanalan, boasting an intimidating array of siege engines and troop conveyances as well as a facility for breeding war drakes. Recent moons have seen a sharp rise in activity at Zahar’ak, which has sparked disquieting rumors among Ul’dahns of a full-scale assault on the sultanate. Read more…

Final Fantasy XIV: Patch 1.18 large-scale Changes to Enmity Systems

July 7th, 2011
