A new holiday edition producer’s letter has been published on the official TERA site, and in it Chris Hager announces that he is currently using the studio’s new launcher to log in to the game. Why is this such a big deal? Hager explains that it “represents a huge leap for us here at En Masse.” He goes on to tell how, over the past year, the team has worked “directly and intimately with the Bluehole development team to… add features that appeal to western gamers.”

But why is the new launcher so important? Because it’s one of the features that the studio built from the ground up. Hager also notes that the game has been in alpha for “about 4 months” and that this week is the last week of alpha testing. He says the team is also looking forward to “the next step in TERA’s journey toward launch next spring.” Here’s to hoping that next step is a beta test. For the full letter, just click on over to the official TERA site.

Today’s Lord of the Rings Online dev diary brings players behind the scenes with the upcoming instance cluster, Ring of Isengard. This new update includes three small fellowships, one fellowship, and one raid, ensuring that there’s something for groups of every size. The team is working off the recent success of the instance cluster In Their Absence.

The team states that “[Ring of Isengard] is a return to the classic LotRO cluster model with In Their Absence’s added benefit of tiers.” The cluster puts a large focus on interacting with the environment, with the addition of ballistas, saw mills, and more. The diary also gives many details on the story of the cluster, but we’re not going to give it all away. Head on over to the official dev diary and read it for yourself.

Ever since free-to-play came to Lord of the Rings Online, players looking to move from one server to another have often run into a big, forbidding wall. To keep the server populations from capsizing, Turbine disallowed transfers to select servers for over a year.

It looks like this has changed, as Turbine recently posted an update to its paid premium services forum thread. In it, the studio announced that all such transfer restrictions are removed:
We are also happy to announce that NA World Character Transfers are now available for transfer between ALL North American servers as of 9th November, 2011! Yes, you may now transfer TO Brandywine, Crickhollow, Dwarrowdelf, Elendilmir, Imladris, Landroval, or Riddermark!
European players have access to this service as well.

Unfortunately, these transfers aren’t free but come with a hefty pricetag. Players looking to move server homes will need to shell out either $24.95, €21.95, or 2995 Turbine Points. There is also an issue with moving a character back to a server that it came from, so players cannot do that until Turbine resolves the issue.

While Lord of the Rings Online’s forums have returned following Turbine’s decision to take them down due to a security issue, many players were left in the dark about what had happened. To clear the air with this, the studio posted a brief security FAQ that addresses the specifics of what went down this past week.

According to the FAQ, Turbine became aware of a compromise in the forum database that would allow unauthorized access from outsiders. The company took the forums offline, brought in security experts, and fixed the bug that caused this issue. Turbine also claims it has strengthened its web security and that no payment details, including credit card information, were in danger of being stolen.

As part of an effort to make sure all players were secure, Turbine sent out notices to a few customers with particularly vulnerable passwords. In the email, the players were informed that their passwords were reset for their own safety.

The FAQ ends with a few Dos and Don’ts about password creation which all MMO players would be wise to adopt.

Part of the transition to free-to-play for The Lord of the Rings Online includes some cosmetic changes here and there. We got a glimpse of that a few weeks ago, and now Turbine is giving us a look at another area that’s undergone some changes.

The man and hobbit starting areas will have a new look when free-to-play arrives this fall. You’ll see some familiar faces, and you’ll still have the standard assortment of shadowy figures, backstory, and angry creatures to fight, but things will look a bit different.

Check out the newest addition to the gallery below for a look at the new man and hobbit starting areas.

Over at Mordor or Bust, Lord of the Rings Online’s new executive producer Kate Paiz sat down to talk about what’s on every hobbit’s mind: the transition to LotRO’s free-to-play version this fall. Paiz took the reins of LotRO just as the F2P change was announced and is bringing her experience from DDO Unlimited’s transition over to LotRO’s team.

In the interview, Paiz spends a considerable amount of time both praising the community and reassuring it that these changes will benefit the game as a whole. One of the issues she addressed was the lack of Player versus Monster Player (PvMP) combat for non-subscribers, saying that it was necessary for now, but that may change in the future: “While we plan to introduce [PvMP] at some point in the future to the rest of the playerbase, we wanted to first focus on delivering the quality PvE game that we have to players in a way that continued to drive great interest and fun in the game.”

While she declined to comment on whether Turbine would be giving refunds for lifetime subscribers who purchased that option shortly before the announcement of the F2P change, Paiz did say they’d like to offer lifetime VIP subscriptions again at some point. Paiz also said Turbine has “a lot of ideas” for additional classes, and it is working with the CDC to get LotRO launched in China.

You can read the full interview over at Mordor or Bust!

You know how your hippie relatives are forever bragging about how they went to Woodstock during the Summer of Free Love, and how your generation will never experience something that historical and muddy? Well, now you can get all up in their faces and say, “Yeah, but were you at Weatherstock in Lord of the Rings Online, dealing with lag and hobbits underfoot? I thought not!”

Weatherstock has become a tradition on the US Landroval server, a yearly gathering of bands and music lovers at the summit of Weathertop (aka Amon Sul) in the Lone-lands. Where once Frodo and Aragorn fought off the Nazgûl, these grounds now will be covered in song and spirits. Organized by the Lonely Mountain Band kinship, Weatherstock will feature three hours of music as 10 bands face off to win prizes. However, only one group will be chosen by the crowd and declared the best.

The player-run event is very organized, with “Freakout Zones” and cheap goodies available. If you play on another server and want to check Weatherstock out, lowbie characters will be protected by event security, who are tasked with beating down enemy mobs on the road to the summit. You can surf the crowd at Weatherstock on Saturday, June 12th, 7pm EST on the Landroval server.

The only people who stop RP is… well… you.

The other notion — the one that all RP is going to die in a fire thanks to this move — is just as silly. Why? Well, the only people who can truly stop the RP are the RPers.

I’m not saying this frivolously — I know exactly how frustrating it is when some jerk attempts to troll your RP events. I’ve dealt with my share across many, many games. But, I know that my guild and I just hit the ignore button on the jerk, and we kept on going. We didn’t stop because someone was jumping around, and that actually drove him off faster than engaging him.

Jerks are like pop icons. They flare up out of nowhere, attempt to troll you for 15 minutes of fame, and then are found lying in a hotel room in a pool of their own vomit. If you keep on doing what you do best — be a good community — you stifle them. You snuff them out because it’s really hard to be a troll when everyone around you is acting differently. If a large portion of the community keeps on being great people, those trolls will end up wandering away.

Plus, when newcomers walk into the LotRO community and see awesome people, they’re most likely going to be encouraged to stay just as respectful. Communities attract like-minded individuals, so keep on keepin’ on.

“The thing that controls the community isn’t Turbine or the business model of the game — it’s you, the community members.”
So if you want to follow Keen’s advice and abandon ship, here’s what I can tell you. If you abandon the game and the community, then there’s a 100% chance that what’s there now will end. Why? Because everyone left. You can’t keep a great community together if everyone leaves. But if you stay there and brave through any mishaps that this change is going to bring, then there’s going to be a chance that everything stays strong.

Personally, the 100% failure rate sounds pretty bad, no?

I’m not saying it’s going to be an easy time, or that the community is going to overcome this in a night. Everything’s going to have to be remolded slowly, over a period of months or perhaps even a year. The community is going to have to stay strong over a long amount of time, but it’s not like the LotRO community never did that before. You guys survived launch pretty well.

The synopsis is in the title

You’ve most likely guessed where I’m going with this by now. Lord of the Rings Online will only explode into ashes if you let it explode into ashes. The thing that controls the community isn’t Turbine or the business model of the game — it’s you, the community members. You control what the community is like.

It’s you guys who made Landroval such a great server to be on. It’s you guys who keep players like me coming back and paying 15 bucks a month. It’s being with you guys that’s making me super-excited about LotRO going free-to-play.

While there was a lot of criticism and praise being flung around for Lord of the Rings Online making this absolutely crazy move, it’s the criticism that I want to tackle in today’s column.

Specifically, there’s one piece of criticism that I feel needs to have bull called on it — the concept that the Lord of the Rings Online community will fall apart the second the free-to-play crowd is mixed in.

Woah, strong language there, Angry McOverreactington!

Of the many opinions I read, I think there’s one that really stands out to me as being a little over the top and a “heart-of-the-matter” summary of the problem many people are having with this F2P conversion. Keen, over at Keen and Graev’s Gaming Blog, wrote the following regarding this whole situation:

“LotRO had one of the tightest communities we’ve seen post-SWG/EQ era, especially on servers like Landroval. Your communities will now be inundated with the free-to-play crowd which will infiltrate and destroy you from within. I hope this destroys the game so that Turbine, and the rest of the industry, learn a lesson that should never have been necessary. Find yourselves a new game, LotRO fans and community. Find one that deserves you because you really are a good lot.”

First, let me agree with Keen for a moment. The LotRO community is amazing, period, end of story. I’m a Landroval-er myself, and I’ve always enjoyed my time on that server. It’s thrilling for a player like me to be able to walk into The Prancing Pony and see people actually sitting down, smoking pipeweed, and talking about the matters of the land. Only one other server has even come close, and that’s World of Warcraft’s Wyrmrest Accord.

However, Keen’s opinion and my opinion are going to have to split ways from here on out. I think he’s given the LotRO community the worst possible advice — abandon ship — and I think he’s engaging in a needless “us vs. them” mentality.

Those dirty, dirty F2Pers… may consist of some old friends

Many people are jumping on this whole “us vs. them” mentality when they think of the F2P community. All they can envision is a horde of 12-year-olds storming Middle Earth, jumping up and down on every Hobbit they see like an Italian plumber, all while screaming, “ROFLPWNNOOB!”

While, certainly, there are going to be some n00bt00ls in the F2P group that joins up, there are going to be some happy surprises. Namely, I’m talking about the people who had to close their accounts due to financial reasons, but were amazing community members. People tend to forget that some of the people coming back are friends of current subscribers, RPers of yesteryear who could no longer justify the subscription fee, or old players who want a game on the side.

Those people certainly aren’t going to tear down the game’s community — they’re going to further empower it. I don’t think the former guild leaders or former RPers are going to “infiltrate and destroy you from within.” Come on now.
