At this point, the “Diablo III is probably coming to consoles” thing is like a joke without a punchline. We just keep building and building on the premise, but there’s no release in sight. Still, Blizzard keeps giving us material for the setup, this time in the form of another job posting on Gamasutra for a Console Network Senior Software Engineer.

In English, Egon? According to the job listing, “this position is responsible for ensuring the best implementation of sophisticated networking systems on consoles.”

Last time we checked, Diablo III game director Jay Wilson said “we don’t want to announce something until we’re sure.” Blizzard sure does hire a lot of people without being sure!

Kojima the producer open to MGS remake, Kojima the creator not so much

Konami’s recent Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is an odd product for shipping without anything called “Metal Gear Solid HD” in the box. One part of series creator Hideo Kojima views the omission as a call to be answered, while another is eager to spend less time in the past.

“There are a lot of people wanting remakes of the original, and as producer I want to answer those calls,” Kojima tells Official PlayStation Magazine. “But as a creator I’m not very interested in going back. If we were to do it, it would have to be a total remake – the only thing that would be the same would be the story. If it happened at some point I would stay as a producer, but would have to hand off most of the actual creating.”

We’ve heard of Metal Gear Solid’s seemingly inevitable continuation before, and of Kojima’s wearying dance between director and producer. The first Metal Gear Solid is satisfactory in being “the game I wanted to make,” says Kojima, who sounds like he’d rather not meddle and make it once more — never mind that it’s already been redone in MGS: Twin Snakes with the help of Silicon Knights and Nintendo. “If you bring the gameplay up to modern standards, then you lose a bit of the original game. It was a game made for a certain era – not just the story, but the controls and everything about it reflect that era in which the game was made.”

That’s right. Back in the day, there wasn’t enough visual fidelity to tell whose footprints those were — and we liked it.

Display changes for graphics and levels in Star Trek Online

As the free-to-play conversion for Star Trek Online continues to approach, the game’s development team continues to make more last-minute polishes. As outlined in the most recent entry in the Path to F2P blog series, one improvement directly pertains to the game’s graphics, putting in DirectX 11 support for players whose cards can support the display mode. While it won’t offer a performance increase for every player, there are players who have reported big jumps in FPS with DirectX 11 on while testing on the Tribble server.

The other major improvement deployed to the test server is a change to the game’s rank display. Previously, the game displayed levels by rank and grade — a player would move from Commander 10 (level 29) to Captain 1 (level 30), which was evocative of the setting but a bit hard to process at a glance. So the display has been trimmed up and improved, with player level displaying as a rank followed by the level (the previous example would now display as Commander 29, then Captain 30). No actual levels have been lost — it’s just a change to ensure that new players have an easier time understanding the level differences.

Before all of Sony Online Entertainment’s developers fly out to see family and spend the holidays away from EverQuest II, the team decided to give players one last Frostfell present. Today’s producer’s letter takes a look at a number of new features coming to Norrath.

The dungeon finder will see a couple of updates, such as the addition of contested dungeons to the dungeon finder and increased rewards for using the dungeon finder system. Dungeon-makers, meanwhile, will be granted a number of new treats. New effect objects will be available in the marketplace, and many items such as spawners, decorations, and maps will be purchasable with Station Cash as well as in-game currency. A number of general improvements have been made as well, including a revamped rating system for houses and dungeons and a couple of smaller tweaks. Dawntide’s beta server is officially closed for business. As we told you earlier this month, indie studio Working as Intended has decided to suspend the fantasy sandbox’s open beta phase in order to focus on a large-scale gameworld revamp.

WAI says that the servers will be offline “for a period of one to two months,” and the company intends to keep players posted via weekly news updates and screenshots of the work in progress.

Dawntide is a non-linear open-world title featuring skill-based advancement and a deep crafting system. You can check out our first impressions of the beta client via Some Assembly Required.

Are you ready for another free-to-play martial arts MMO from China? Ready or not, Perfect World Entertainment is producing a title called Fantasy Condor Heroes, according to a news blurb at Gamasutra.

If you’re a student of Chinese popular culture, that name may ring a bell since it’s taken from a wuxia novel called Return of the Condor Heroes. The book was written by author Louis Cha (under the pen name Jin Yong) and originally serialized in the late 1950s. Thus far Perfect World has not made any feature- or gameplay-related details available, nor do we know when Fantasy Condor Heroes will be released.

Valve has unwrapped the second-annual Australian Christmas update for Team Fortress 2, bringing with it the kind of cheer that can only come from a pile of heavy-duty, particle-melting weapons and a brand new map to use them in. The update includes two new Dr. Grordbort weapon packs — The Brainiac Pack for Engineer and The Moonman Pack for Pyro — and Foundry, a new control-point map with 12 unique achievements.

Valve is also dropping 14 community-created holiday weapons in Nice Crates, and strings of festive weapon lights in Naughty Crates, through Dec. 22. More than 50 items in the Mann Co. store are up to 75 percent off through Jan. 2, and the in-game item-drop rate will be doubled for the first week of the event.

If that doesn’t put you in a joyful mood, maybe a child stabbing Santa in the neck will — read all about it in the new TF2 comic, “A Smissmas Story.”

Google Zeitgeist puts Battlefield 3 in top ten rising searches, Black Ops tops gaming chart

Google published its annual “Zeitgeist” report of the most popular searches and topics in 2011 this past week and for the first time ever, a game was included in the top ten fastest rising search terms of the year. Yes, as you’ve probably already guessed, it was “Gem Keeper.” Wait, no, it was “Battlefield 3.” EA’s big shooter stirred up some interest, apparently, landing it right in between “Casey Anthony” and the “iPhone 5″ in biggest gains in search popularity of the year.

When it comes to video games in North America, however, there’s another title on top of the heap: “Black Ops” was the most searched-for term in the category, with “Call of Duty” coming soon after that. “Battlefield 3″ didn’t even make the list in the category numbers, so its overall search volume was actually lower than the Activision series. Don’t count “Halo Reach” or “Super Mario” out either — they show up at the third and fourth spots on the list in the gaming category.

And Google even shows us what 2011 searchers are most interested to play next year: “Diablo 3″ and “Mass Effect 3″ sit at the bottom of the list already for the most searched-for terms in gaming.

You know the classic scene in A Christmas Story when Flick gets his tongue frozen to a flagpole? Sure, we all do. But many (including some top film historians) are unaware that Flick performs the stunt on the promise that he’ll be rewarded with entry into the PC Blacklight Retribution closed beta. It’s true!

You remember when the Grinch stole all the gifts from Whoville? New research shows that the only one he was really trying to nab was a Blacklight Retribution beta invite, the rest were just a smokescreen.

Oh, and had he not arrived so late as to not be included in the Christian Bible, you’d know that the fourth king from the East brought unto the baby Jesus … OK, so we’re making this one up, but you get the idea.

Here’s the great news: You PC owners don’t have to steal from a village of diminutive pure-hearts or lick anything to start playing the Blacklight Retribution beta. Just claim your code and redeem it here!

Sony confirms Ueda’s departure; The Last Guardian to be completed on contract

The real news, of course, is that Sony is publicly promising The Last Guardian will be finished … at some point. The respected creative force behind the project, Fumito Ueda, is “committed to completing” his third major game with Sony on a contract basis. Sony confirmed his departure with Gamasutra, concluding a swirl of rumors from last month.

The Last Guardian has yet to receive a solid release date after being bumped out of holiday 2011. “I sincerely apologize to all the customers who have been waiting for ‘The Last Guardian’ for so long, but I beg for your patience,” Ueda said in April. “I will also announce the new release timing at a later time.”

The game’s other notable departure, Executive Producer Yoshifusa Hayama, has joined social gaming studio Bossa Studios. Ueda hasn’t provided a clear indication of his post-Guardian future yet, giving us enough time to envision dream team-ups with Grasshopper Manufacture’s Suda 51, or Shinji Mikami at the Zenimax-owned Tango. Who’s going to say no to Mr. Shadow of the Colossus?

TERA producer confident that game offers something new

“If we had simply cloned a successful MMO, I think we’d have a battle on our hands, but we didn’t,” says TERA Europe producer Stephan Krippendorf. He’s talking, of course, about the inevitable World of Warcraft comparisons that dog every new fantasy MMO (comparisons that seem particularly irrelevant given TERA’s impressive visuals and divergent combat).

“When you dive into the game for the first time, swing a sword, cast a spell, dodge and weave in combat, you’ll be hooked,” Krippendorf explains in an interview at Videogamer.com. The sit-down covers a bit about the game’s action combat mechanics as well as the story elements and the endgame political system, but most of the juicy tidbits center around the title’s potential success in a crowded MMO market.

“I think TERA has what it takes to be a huge success though, regardless of WoW numbers,” Krippendorf concludes.

The Repopulation is getting a graphics makeover according to the latest developer update. Above & Beyond Technologies has updated its website with a look at what happened during the month of November, and at the top of the list is a “major revamp to the character models” as well as new building and environment models.

Other milestones include the implementation of the game’s weather system (including rain, snow, dust storms, sand storms, and meteor showers) and various combat and crafting abilities. Work also continues on the game’s “awakening” sequence and starter/tutorial areas, with the goal being a more polished newbie experience than that of your typical non-linear title.

The Repopulation is a three-faction sci-fi sandbox with toggle-enabled action combat and a substantial crafting system. The game is scheduled to begin beta testing in 2012.

Issue 3 of Whiteout available for Champions Online players

No job ever goes quite right, no matter how well you plan it. It’s as true in Champions Online as it is anywhere else, and it’s certainly the case in the latest installment of the Whiteout series. After all, the first two issues made it plenty clear that heroes would have their hands full dealing with a downed alien spacecraft, but now things are going from bad to worse for the Steelhead soldiers and the player characters. It seems there’s another player involved in the game who hopes to get in on the wrecked ship…

As with previous installments of the series, the new issue can be played by any character over level 11 and provides special rewards in addition to the usual mission benefits. But if you’ve already played through the mission, you can take a look at the game’s latest Art Corner, which shows off the design of the mechanical antagonists plaguing the newest mission installment (and the subsequent ones as well, most likely).
