RuneScape announces launch date for Evolution of Combat patch

November 7th, 2012

From massively.com

The previous model in which you stood in place and shouted was kind of a poor model, in hindsight.Fans of violence in RuneScape have something to cheer about today as the release date has finally been announced for the game’s massive overhaul of the combat mechanics. On November 20th, the patch goes live after five months of active testing and rebalancing based on feedback. And it’s got far-reaching implications for the game as a whole — by improving the game’s combat mechanics and battle environments, the developers can introduce content that wouldn’t have worked under the old system.

So what can players expect? Abilities are replacing the special attacks found on weapons with several new options for battle, and a new resource (Adrenaline) will go into activating your more powerful combat skills. Characters will also be able to make full use of both hands via dual-wielding, offering more aggressive options as well as more equipment options for mages. The announcement also promises a livestream this weekend to help players learn about and understand the changes before they go live in a couple weeks.

It’s almost over. RuneScape’s year-long celebration of its 10th anniversary is coming to a close, and Jagex has great, wonderful plans to end it with a bang. Naturally, this translates into “developer manhunt” because why not?

During New Year’s Eve, players are encouraged to be on alert as the clock strikes midnight 39 times in each of the time zones across the world. Every time this happens, a special moderator’s in-game location will be made known through Facebook, on Twitter and in RuneScape itself. Those who can hunt down and find this mod in time will be treated to a special celebration.

The first clock to strike midnight on New Year’s Eve is in Tokelau on Saturday, December 31st, at 5:00 a.m. EST. RuneScape players may wish to note that not all 39 “midnights” occur on the hour (this helpful website lays out the precise order).

RuneScape adds a new dungeon for mold time’s sake

It’s not really a proper fantasy game until you’ve fought your way through animated fungi, right? That’s the premise of the newest dungeon in RuneScape, the just-added Polypore Dungeon. Deep within the dungeon lives a solitary skinweaver who was born to be a healer, but she’s turned her powers to creating animated fungi for her own amusement. With her only other companion an ancient merchant that no longer has all of his faculties, her domain isn’t a prime vacation spot… unless, of course, you’re a skilled adventurer looking for new items and new craftable armor.

The new dungeon can be reached north of the Duel Arena bank, with most of its contents requiring a high level in various skills. The inhabitants are non-aggressive, however, allowing any and all members to take a look at the place freely. Other updates include an improvement to the Slayer interface and the UI option to switch bloom lighting on or off, which should help improve your overall experience whether or not you decide to go mushroom hunting.

RuneScape dev panel highlights incredible success of bot bans

Over the past few weeks, we’ve heard a great deal about browser MMO RuneScape’s struggle against botting and RMT. The bot problem has become progressively worse over the past year, with bot makers countering every change developers made to stop their bots from working. This week developer Jagex celebrated bot-nuking day as it deployed a massive update designed to permanently stop all of the popular reflection and injection bots from working.

At this year’s annual RuneFest event, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard presented a fantastic insider panel on the facts and figures behind bot-nuking day. Mark explained the company’s position — that normal players botting to speed up gameplay was counter to the goals of RuneScape. “We don’t want your computer to play with our computer,” he told attendees, “we want you to have fun with our community.” Before delving into facts and figures, Mark reminded attendees of the element of unfairness that bots create. “I want to know that if I’m putting in 30 minutes this evening, that that 30 minutes is equal to everyone else’s 30 minutes.”

Want to know how many million accounts were banned since bot-nuking day? Read on for a summary of the facts and figures from the talk and to watch the full video in HD.

The figures below are taken directly from the dev panel. While they aren’t all exact figures, they show the incredible success of Jagex’s new “Cluster Flutterer” technology in fighting bots.
New botting accounts created every day — 100,000 – 200,000
Gold-farming accounts banned on bot-nuking day — 1,500,000
Accounts being banned per minute right now — 9,000
Gold farming accounts banned since Tuesday — 7,700,000
Accounts created from China and Korea per week — Old: 173,000, New: 953
Decrease in player activity since bot-nuking day — 60%
Banned accounts that were paid members — 10%
Bots estimated to have been rendered ineffective — 98%

RuneScape celebrates ‘bot-nuking day’ this Tuesday

Last week we reported that veteran browser MMO RuneScape was losing its ongoing war on bots. Players have begun botting on a massive scale, and it’s become increasingly difficult to distinguish bots from ordinary players. Developer Jagex asked for help from the playerbase in solving the botting problem and announced its intention to continue fighting legal battles against the creators of bot programs.

In a new community update this week, Jagex Chief Executive Officer Mark Gerhard announced the release of a new doomsday weapon in the war on bots. In an upcoming patch on October 25th, Jagex will be “launching our most formidable bot-busting weapon in our history, targeting what we believe to be 98% of the bots seen in game.” This update permanently prevents reflection bots from working and the effects should be immediately visible in-game. To celebrate “bot-nuking day”, Tuesday’s patch brings four days of events and minigame bonuses for regular players.

RuneScape is losing the war on bots

We have an expectation of conflicts made up of good vs. evil. What we don’t usually expect is for evil to win. But in RuneScape’s war against the evil of botting, that appears to be what’s happening. In a letter from Daniel Clough, it was explained that despite the development team’s best efforts, the war on bots is being won by the botters. The re-introduction of the Wilderness and Free Trade has resulted in an explosion of gold farming and botting that just can’t be held back.

The letter goes on to urge players to not utilize these services and report anyone known to be using them and outlines the steps being taken to try to beat back the tide. But as Clough puts it, while the staff sinks significant time and money into fighting the problem, it’s fighting an opponent whose only business goal is to get back into the game. It’s grim news for the game’s players, certainly, and it doesn’t bode well for the many other games waging the same battles.

New Rewards for Minigames in RuneScape

September 21st, 2011

Runescape gold

We’ve added a veritable bounty of high-level rewards to our minigames, including armour sets to boost Thieving and Runecrafting XP gain, macabre customisation options for dark magic users and an infernally adorable pet Jad. If there’s a minigame that you’ve never tried before, or one that you’ve not played for a long time, now is a terrific time to start!

New equipment

We’ve added 5 entirely new sets of gear which are now available to high-level minigame devotees.

Master runecrafter robes: This set is available to arcane scholars persistently participating in the Great Orb Project. In addition to all the stat bonuses of the lower-level Runecrafting robes, each piece of this set offers a bonus to Runecrafting XP gain, with a total bonus of +2.5% when the whole set is worn.

Black Ibis outfit: Once worn by members of an ancient, secret society, this clothing can be obtained through Pyramid Plunder. In a similar vein to the Master Runecrafter Robes, each article of clothing provides a bonus to Thieving XP gain (with a few exceptions), for a total of +2.5% for the whole set.

Hybrid armour: These three new armour sets provide substantial bonuses to multi-talented combatants while playing Castle Wars, Soul Wars, Fist of Guthix and TzHaar Fight Pits:

• Battle-mage armour: This set is great for warrior-wizards who use both melee and magic to overcome opponents.
• Trickster armour: Ideal for the cunning combatant who needs to switch between ranged and magical attacks at a moment’s notice.
• Vanguard armour: Perfect for the versatile frontline fighter who likes to weaken enemies at range before closing to finish the job in melee.

While these hybrid armour sets provide no benefits to statistics outside of PVP minigames, they do look very cool.

RuneScape “Behind the Scenes” updates in June

June 2nd, 2011

From RuneScape Lead Designer,

Before the release of RuneScape buffing items, there’ll be two other updates in which you’ll have to overcome some imposing obstacles: a sea monster in our newest master quest, and a troll invasion in a new distraction and diversion.

Deadliest Catch
The sea monster Thalassus has been terrorising the cold and inhospitable oceans to the north. No one has
survived to sketch a picture of this hulking beast, but the inns are full of rumours: Thalassus is the size of
the Wizards’Tower, they say; sailors are eaten and digested while still alive in its belly.Fisherman Jones wants to end the scare stories by landing the beast (gaining a little glory in the process). To join him, Read more…
