Not everything in Star Trek Online is fighting when it comes to space. Sometimes, you turn and a lovely sight such as the one captured above will greet you. While this image was captured during the open beta, these types of stunning views are still there, waiting to be discovered by Star Trek Online’s players.
Today’s One Shots comes to us from Sjohn, who writes in to give us some context: I was doing a mission in the Pico System where I was patrolling the mines located in the rings around one of the planets. Saw this view and couldn’t help but save it for later!

The last patch for Star Trek Online is now available to be downloaded and installed via the Cryptic Launcher. According to Cryptic Community Manager Stormshade, the patch will be the last one before the head start begins. The head start is for players who purchased a pre-order — if you haven’t purchased the STO pre-order and are interested in it, there is still time to do so. More information is available from Cryptic.
If you have been participating in the open/closed beta, your client just needs to be patched up to the latest version. There is no need to download and install an entirely new client. If you want to copy your game installation to another computer to run, just copy the folder across via normal means — again, no need to download an entirely new client. This patch which you’ll get is about 60 megs and is a quick download right now, although that is likely going to change once the masses get to it.
It’s also worth reminding people that their beta character has been deleted, and you’ll need to start anew.
The head start begins today at 10:00 a.m. PST.

The end of beta event for Star Trek Online was a crazy smorgasBorg of some pretty epic proportions. The invasion forces were everywhere you turned, and it seemed like no matter how hard players tried, there were Borg everywhere. Thankfully, we’ve gotten some great Star Trek Online screenshots from players that we’ll be showing off — like today’s One Shots! This one comes to us from Neville, who writes in: This was a shot taken from Sol (Earth Spacedock) at the Open Beta ending event. I hope the Borg aren’t claustrophobic!
One Shots is all about your experiences in your favorite games. If you’ve caught something awesome you’d love to share with the world, send it in to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we’re seeing. We’ll help you share it with the world — or at least the chunk of the world cool enough to read Massively, anyway.

Perhaps you’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about Star Trek Online lately. Or, perhaps you’re reading this article in the year 2018, after the robots have begun their bloody revolt. Either way, you’ve never been way into Star Trek, but find yourself curious about this new MMO based on the franchise. In that cast, this iteration of Captain’s Log is just for you.
As a side note, this will be the last week you’ll find this feature going live on Friday. Henceforth, a new Captain’s Log will appear every Thursday — so keep an eye out!
There are generally two schools of thought on what Star Trek should be as represented by an MMO:
Point of view A: Diplomacy mechanics with deep, text heavy branches of dialogue that may potentially lead to fighting or could resolve in a discussion of a philosophical nature.
Point of view B: Blowing stuff up with a giant space ship, and occasionally engaging in some cool story elements that evoke that specific Star Trek feel.
Star Trek Online is the second one, and it really doesn’t make any apologies for that. Chances are, if you’re like most people who’ve never gotten into Star Trek, all the talking and grandstanding wasn’t your thing. If anything, STO is much more like the recent JJ Abrams movie more than it’s like the television series.

Welcome to the first edition of Star Trek Online 101. Over the next week and a half we’ll be taking a look basic skills and information you need to be successful in STO. Each day we’ll look at a different subject, and we’ll kick it all off by talking about the different types of STO currency.
There are three types of currency in Star Trek Online:
Energy Credits
Starfleet Merits
Explorer Badges
Each type of currency is gained through completing various actions in game, be it completing quests or selling off items. Each type is earned in distinctly different ways and provides different rewards, meaning that a successful STO player will need to be concerned with amassing all three types. Fortunately this shouldn’t be too much of an issue — in the closed and open beta energy credits and Starfleet merits seem easy enough to come by.

In the Star Trek universe, the Cardassians generally aren’t listed in the same breath as the Klingons or the Romulans as adversaries. That is, unless you’ve seen Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Then you likely won’t stop going on about the rigid and hidebound social structure and the backstabbing government plots, or even just about Elim Garak. The Cardassian faction was hinted at some time ago in Star Trek Online, but while the official page hasn’t yet filled out the page, we do have a fair amount of information on the faction. And while it may or may not satisfy everyone looking forward to the faction, there’s plenty for fans of the game to get excited about.
At this point, the once-grand empire has been reduced to a difficult existence trying to rebuild the government and society after the events of the Dominion War, recounted on the game’s official timeline. The socially-minded Detapa Council, however, is facing opposition from the True Way, an organization seeking a return to Cardassia Prime’s more militaristic society. There are also rumors that the Obsidian Order might be still running around, something that almost any fan of the series would have expected. Star Trek Online looks to have plans for the Cardassians, and while it probably won’t involve a tailor on the bridge crew, we can only hope.
Click past the break for a short official video giving a peek of the Cardassians in action, as well as the in-universe dossiers by Starfleet and the Klingon Empire.

There’s a lot to absorb in the new Star Trek Online official “State of the Game” but we’d like to focus on some key points found in the update from Cryptic. Akira Sulu? Yeah, he’s on the other side of the Admiral’s quarters, behind the other desk.
We kid, but really, he’s there. There’s a bevy of future bug fixes, UI improvements, exploration and combat tweaks coming soon to open beta, which will soon see a level cap removal as well. That means DS9 and Memory Alpha will open up as well as the higher tiers of ships — just keep in mind you’ll need to re-do much of that work when the game goes live. Also well worth mentioning is that the open beta has had a huge turnout, which explains the stability issues. We kinda had a feeling that was the case, but it’s nice to hear it from the horse’s mouth.
The near future sounds bright for Star Trek Online, and we can only imagine the first bouts of content updates the team is putting together already.
