It’s been a month since TERA launched on Western shores, and that means it’s time to start thinking about the future. A new official post is offering a sneak peek at future updates for the game, starting with changes to the game’s two tank classes. Warriors and Lancers are both getting new abilities and a new resource to help make tanking less of a chore. Lancers will get two new moves, including one to help with overall mobility, and Warriors get three moves, including the option to block attacks with paired swords.
The development team is also planning on adding new instances; one of these, a high-end instance, will pit players against the argon queen Shandra Manaya. The instances will likely include new high-end glyphs for players as well as other drops. Cross-server 15-vs.-15 battlegrounds are also in the works; the whole pile of updates is en route for later this summer. It’s good news for any avid TERA fans looking for more content over the next several months.

The rumored Tex Murphy Kickstarter has been confirmed, to the tune of $216,000 (out of $450k as of this writing). That’s how much creators Chris Jones and Aaron Conners have put together already to make the long-awaited “Project Fedora,” the next in the cult classic series of full motion video sci-fi noir titles.
You can get a copy of the (eventual) game just by backing at the price of $15, and there are lots of other rewards for higher payments, including a collector’s edition, new commentary for the old Tex Murphy games, and even the chance to beta test and be in the game itself. The creators say that the game will have full-motion video, but it will also include a 3D game world, with branching paths of story to follow. As Tex says in the wild Kickstarter video, “it’s hat-in-hand time,” so go over and give if you want to get in early.

TERA players, have you been spending weeks trying to find that one perfect weapon? Or maybe you just want to know which mob drops the crafting mats you need to pimp out your gear. Either way, the ZAM Network is here to help. En Masse Entertainment has announced on the official TERA site that ZAM’s TERA database, alliteratively named TERA Tome, is live and kickin’.
The current version of the site includes all of the nifty features that players have come to expect from ZAM’s MMO databases, such as information on quests, items, and abilities as well as helpful forums and comments. Players trying to get a handle on their character’s build should also find the site handy thanks to its useful glyph calculator that allows players to survey all currently available glyphs without the need to set foot in the game. Just head on over to the recently launched site to crack open the tome.

There’s a conception among some gamers that working with video games for a living entails more “video games” than “working.” A new development diary by TERA’s writing team manager David Noonan is quick to disabuse readers of that notion. He does see the job as a labor of love, but he also freely admits that every day brings the question of how much time will be “love” and how much time will be plain old “labor.”
Noonan explains the way that he and his team look at bug reports relating to their department. Sometimes, the only thing that needs to be changed is a simple typo; other times, the dialogue of an entire quest chain will need to be rewritten from the start. But that doesn’t negate the joy of filling in a story and creating a world, from the major quests down to the item names. If you have an interest in TERA’s writing, game writing in general, or both, Noonan has some interesting insights to share.

What with all the hullabaloo about TERA Europe’s sex-and-violence-reducing changes to the game, some European players have professed to having second thoughts about whether or not to actually purchase the action-focused title. Frogster, the game’s European publisher, announced today a new promotion for players who have purchased (or plan to purchase prior to launch) the European version of TERA.
To get in on the promotion, players must have purchased the full version of TERA (not the mini pre-order version, which can be upgraded to the full or collector’s edition) prior to the game’s May 2nd launch. Any players who fall into that category will be rewarded with the Legendary Legacy item package, which includes an exclusive weapon skin for each class, plus three accessories: a pirate eye-patch, a pirate face-mask, and… a pair of horn-rimmed glasses? Well, it’s officially official. En Masse Entertainment is launching its long-awaited TERA MMO on May 1st in North America. A posting on the game’s website confirms the date, and it also mentions both standard and collector’s edition offerings, the contents of which will be revealed in February.
In the meantime, En Masse is accepting beta applications, and the company also promises “lots more in store” for the month of January.
TERA was originally developed by Bluehole Studio; the title launched in Korea in early 2011. The game is a high fantasy MMORPG focused around action combat and featuring an endgame political system.
[Update: Frogster has also announced that the EU version of TERA will be available on May 3rd.]

If you’re looking forward to TERA but sad about missing En Masse’s demo of the fantasy MMO at last weekend’s PAX East, cheer up!
The firm has just released a recap video that’s almost as good as being there. It was a big week overall for TERA, and the reveals included an A-list voice cast, snippets about the launch head-start period, dungeon finder and economic tweaks, and the lush Twilight Valley region showcased at PAX.
TERA’s PAX demo pitted players against wave after wave of argons and big-ass monsters, not to mention a nasty cuss called Subject 5005. Players who were able to whittle the boss’s health down were then given a further challenge when 5005 transformed into an Argonomorph (yeah, we’re not sure what that is either, but you can see it via the video after the cut).

Last week we told you about En Masse’s casting of Colonel Tigh, er, Michael Hogan for voice-acting work in its new TERA MMO. Now the company brings word that Claudia Black will be joining Hogan in the recording studio to bring aspects of TERA’s fantasy story to life.
Hogan will lend his talents to the Valkyon Federation’s formidable Commander Samael, while Black (best known for her role as Aeryn Sun in Farscape, as well as voice-acting stints in Dragon Age and the Uncharted series) brings her considerable charms to the role of Commander Freya of Allemantheia.

We’ve talked a lot about the American version of TERA’s closed beta, but today the European client has taken center stage as Frogster kicked off its first closed beta weekend at 9:00 a.m. EST (3:00 p.m. CET) today.
Testers will receive two character slots, and they’ll have the opportunity to explore content up to and including level 22. Frogster is also enabling guild PvP and a new outlaw mission in the town of Velika. This weekend’s test marks the start of five closed beta events leading up to TERA Europe’s May 3rd release date.
