Brad Pitt offers advice on dealing with your WoW wife

July 22nd, 2009

As part of the latest issue of WIRED magazine and to tie in with the release of war movie Inglourious Basterds, Brad Pitt has contributed his thoughts to a section in the magazine on how to deal with everything from Google-stalking to WoW.

The idea of this seems to be updating social rules for the twenty-first century (and not make you look like a jackass). He’s responsible for the ‘Ask a Bastard’ sections which feature fun photography and answers life’s insanely important questions, like what to do with your WoW wife if you suspect she is, in fact, a he.

Pitt suggests the following should you suspect your ‘wife’ (night elf, blood elf or even human, I doubt it matters on the specifics) is actually a guy. Yes, he’s playing the fidelity card: Should you confront the individual? “Absolutely not. If it’s good, don’t check under the hood. I say, love her with everything you’ve got. I mean, she’s your wife, man!”

What I want to know is, does Pitt play WoW and is his advice based on real experience? Somehow I see him as an Orc …

Maintenance for Tuesday July 21st

July 20th, 2009

According to the in-game announcement there will be downtime for tomorrow, Tuesday July 21st. Tuesday also marks one month before BlizzCon 2009, where we’re expecting to hear lots of major announcements from Blizzard. Something cataclysmic, hopefully.

The downtime will be happening from 5:00 a.m. PDT / 8:00 a.m. EDT until 11:00 a.m. PDT / 1:00 p.m. EDT. Unlike previous weeks, there are no additional “special” battlegroups that are being taken offline for an extended period.

If there are unexpected going ons with this maintenance, you’ll see additional information posted here. And for those of you wondering, we’re not expecting Patch 3.2 to drop just yet.

Pic for this article is unrelated, but I wanted an excuse all day to use it and now seemed like the right opportunity.

Patch 3.2: Enter Trag Highmountain

June 30th, 2009

When I’m not playing WoW, I’m usually found indulging in manga and have been devouring the Warcraft series ever since the Sunwell Trilogy came out. Of all the characters introduced through comics and manga, the most tragic next to Anveena has to be Trag Highmountain. I’ve watched over the last year as more characters from the print franchises began to appear in-game, and there’s something about seeing them translated into the game which gives me an amazing thrill.

We’ve met Anveena and her soul mate Kalec, Tyri and Jorad as well as Broll and that Blood Elf chick whose always hanging around Varian, so I’ve often wondered when Trag would turn up. It’s inevitable given how his quest to Icecrown is in keeping with Wrath of the Lich King. Imagine my surprise when I logged on to the PTR for the first time this morning to find one Tauren Death Knight standing guard over one of the incapacitated forms of one of the Coliseum bosses.

Yes, it’s our old friend Trag, now a level 80 NPC. While seeming hostile, he makes no move to attack the Alliance or speak, he just seems to stand near Gormok the Impaler. I’m sure he’ll get some lines by the time Patch 3.2 goes live though. Having not yet read Warcraft: Legends’ final volume, I’m curious to find out what happened to him but it’s nice to know he’s finally free of the Lich King’s thrall.

SK Gaming wins MLG Columbus

June 7th, 2009

The dominance of Rogue/Mage/Priest continues as SK Gaming defeated eMazing Gaming’s faceroll Unholy/BM/Holy comp in the Major League Gaming Columbus Grand Finals 6-3 (best of 11 counting previous matchups). SK Gaming took home the $9,000 Grand Prize in the first leg of the MLG 2009 pro circuit, proving that the US still has a competitive RMP team. Europe’s RMP contingent, Ensidia, barely missed the Finals after dropping to eMG in the prior round.

Some of the teams didn’t do so well despite expectations, such as two-time MLG winners Fnatic, who were playing without their Warrior, Rhaegyn. Fnatic did rather poorly, playing a Rogue/Warlock/Shaman comp that simply couldn’t match up against the dominant RMPs or even eMG’s Death Knight/Hunter/Paladin. Evil Geniuses also played below par, but there really have to be teams that occupy the bottom of the standings. The good news is that teams collect points through all MLG legs to tally at the end of the season, so we might see some changes in the next MLG stops.

All the matches were streamed through three different sites via Octoshape, but the streams were choppy and often stalled more than it did in the first two days of the tournament. It came to the point where the matches were simply unwatchable, which is a shame because there were some pretty good games on the last day. The shoutcasters did an excellent job commentating on the matches but camerawork and the pace of the games were just too fast at times to appreciate. Arena Tournaments could benefit greatly from instant replays, slow motion, and camera angles beyond the third person view. Replays should be available on GotFrag soon.

Steelseries looking for Facebook fans, offering epic loot

April 12th, 2009

Steelseries, who you may remember from such releases as the Zboard and the official World of Warcraft mouse, has teamed up with Upper Deck, Bradygames and J!NX to give away four Ultimate World of Warcraft Prize Packs during April, that’s one each week. The best part is it’s really simple to enter: all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning is to add them as a fan on Facebook.

The list of loot is actually quite impressive and includes:

World of Warcraft MMO Gaming Mouse
SteelSeries Zboard Limited Edition Wrath of the Lich King Keyset
Zboard Gaming Keyboard
SteelSeries 5C Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring everyone’s favourite Frost Wyrm Sindragosa)
SteelSeries Qck Limited Edition Mouse Pad (featuring the Lich King)
Wrath of the Lich King Strategy Guide
World of Warcraft Atlas Set
$100 World of Warcraft Apparel Gift Certificate
World of Warcraft Trading Card Game – Drums of War 2 Player Starter Set
World of Warcraft Miniatures Core Set Booster
One again, it’s open to everyone, and all you have to do is click here and add them as a fan.

As contests go, it’s an easy one to enter and you stand the chance to win a lot of cool swag. I particularly like the rather old school atlases (which have recently been updated) and are perfect for RPers who would rather consult an oversized tome of knowledge while the Drums of War starter deck holds the somewhat small chance of winning precious in-game loot.

But before you rush off, starry eyed at the prospect of some loot, don’t forget we’re also running a Fan Art competition with Steelseries! Don’t forget to enter as the closing date of April 20th is creeping ever closer.

Arena Tournament has begun!

February 24th, 2009

The 2009 Arena Tournament officially begun yesterday, kicking of a six-week qualifying period to find the best Arena players who will earn the chance to win prizes totaling over $200,000. Registration was opened a little over a week ago, with Blizzard enticing aspiring Gladiators with the Vanquisher title and a Murloc vanity pet that will translate over to the live realms. The tournament will consist of one round of regional qualifiers, followed by the regional finals, and winners of those finals will compete against each other for the top prize.

Registering for the tournament, which costs $20 or £15, will grant players access to the tournament realms where they can create Level 80 characters of any race and class. These characters will be outfitted with the best Arena gear available — Deadly Gladiator items from Season 5 — and will have access to other epic items as well as enchants, gems, and glyphs allowing them to customize their character as they see fit.

Players whose teams finish in the Top 1000 at the end of the qualifiers will receive the Vanquisher title for all their characters over Level 70. Casual players who don’t play Arenas seriously still have some incentive as the only requirement to obtain the Murloc pet — Murkimus the Gladiator, according to the Patch 3.1 files — is to play 200 games over the six-week qualifying period with one team regardless of record. Players must have an active subscription in order to register.
